Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 24, 1915. Serial No. 23,608.
To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that I, LOUIS N. MCGARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Block or Tile Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is directed to an improvement in presses for manufacturing blocks of plastic material.
Essentially and generally speaking the im proved press comprehends a simple compact machine, involving a pressure head or plunger adapted to compress the material in a mold and against a movable bulk-head, the
pressure pins subsequently acting as anejecting element for the compressed block, the parts-being automatically operated in mechanical sequence for the purpose designed.
The improved press is of the type shown more particularly in Patent No. $37,243, issued to me November 27 1906, the present improvement being designed to simplify the structure described in the said patent while at the same time rendering the parts more efficient.
The essential characteristic of the present invention is in the mounting of the pressure block in the main carriage to insure certain and accurate movement of said block under the eccentric and to prevent other than the necessary movement of the block during the operation of the parts.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, illustrating the improved machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation partly in section of the main carriage showing particularly the means for operating the same and the means for actuating the plunger or pressure pin. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the means for mounting the pressure block in the main carriage.
The present improvement is directed particularly to mounting the presser block in the main carriage and controlling the movement of said block, and in the following descrlption as well as in the drawing, other parts of the combined press will be shown and more or less briefly described. For the purposeof a general understanding of the present invention, however, the press shown includes a main frame 1, providing a bed plate 2, side plates 3, forming a part ofthe bed plate. Mounted for longitudinal movement with relation to such main frame is the main carriage 5. This carriage is adapted for reciprocatory movement and includes longitudinal strips or bars 1 and a head plate 6 in which is formed the mold (not shown). Mounted in the main frame and suitably driven is the main shaft 8, on which is mounted a cam 9, adapted to bear against a roller 10 mounted on the main carriage, and slotted links 13 loosely engaging the main shaft and beyond the latter connected at 16, with the upper end of the standard 1 1, which standard is pivotally mounted on the base 1, as at 15. The shaft 8 is also provided with an oppositely acting cam 18, which engages rollers 17 mounted on the pivotal support between the links 13 and standard 14. The cams illustrate a preferred means for reversely operating the carriage.
The essential feature of the present invention resides in a construction in connection .with the main carriage, and in carrying out the details, there is mounted for vertical reciprocation in the main carriage 5 a cross head 20, this cross head resting upon a box casing 21 formed with a bearing 22 to receive an eccentric 23 fixed upon an actuating shaft 24, having bearing on the main frame and suitably driven and timed in any desired manner. Secured upon the upper surface of the cross head is a plunger or pressure pin 25 having a removable face or end 26, the pin being arranged to cooperate with the mold 7 hereinbefore referred to. As the actuating shaft 24 drives the eccentric the latter induces a reciprocation of the cross head to properly operate the plunger. particular type of operating means that the box casing be prevented from twisting or turning under the operation of the eccentric, and the means to this end hereindescribed constitutes another essential of this invention.
In the present form the box casing is constructed in two sections, an upper section 27 bearing against the cross head, and a lower section 28 removably secured to the upper section, both sections being appropriately formed to present a bearing for the eccentric. A guide stud 29 depends from the lower section and is slidably mounted in a guide block 30, which in turn is mounted for reciprocatory movement between rails 31 secured to the lower portion of the main carriage, the guide block being formed with ribs or tenons 32 to engage in suitable guide channels in the rails. By this particular arrangement the box casing in its reciprocation under the action of the eccentric is guided by the stud 29, which latter by the support described is capable of free movement in each of two right angle directions, but by reason of its non-turning cooperation with the guide block, will in turn prevent any rotative movement of the box casing. The latter is thus positively held to its work and all torsional strain is eliminated.
A further brief description of the press construction may be added as follows: a bulkhead 34 is mounted upon the upper portion of the main frame having a feed spout 86, as is usual in this type of press. The bulkhead is fulcrumed at 38 upon the main frame, the fulcrum, including a bearing plate 39 secured to the main frame and provided with upstanding end walls 40 in which is arranged a block, and adjustably held in a bearing plate by screws 42, the block directly supporting the pivotal con nection 44 of the bulk-head. The necessary pressure for securing the bulk-head in operative molding relation, is secured through the lever 45, fulcrumed at 46 upon a support 47, depending'from the bed plate of the lever, the lever being tied to the fulcrum by links 48. Adjacent the fulcrum support, a frame 49 engages the lever, said frame including rods 50 which are secured to the bulk-head by nuts 51. The end of the lever supports the fulcrum, connected to a compensator 52 of appropriate type through the medium of alink 59. It is not believed necessary to refer specifically to a detailed operation of the parts shown and described as such are included in the present application to show the accepted type of press with which the present invention is concerned, and having no con nection whatever to the claims for the particular present invention, the subject matter of the various parts herein, such for example as the carriage operating means, the pivotal support for the bulk-head, the compensation for the bulk head, and the takeoff or ejector, in so far as they may be novel, forming the subject matter of other applications.
What is claimed is:
1. A molding press including a mold bearing carriage, a molding element mounted for movement in the carriage, an eccentric for operating said element, a box casing embodying an eccentric strap movable with the element and controlled by the eccentric and means to guide the box casing longitudinally and means cooperating with a fixed part of the press to guide the same transversely of the carriage.
2. A molding press including a mold bearing carriage, a molding element mounted for movement in the carriage, a box casing embodying an eccentric strap movable with the element, an eccentric operating said casing, a guide block held against other than movement transverse the carriage, and a stud depending from the casing and movably mounted in the guide block.
3. A molding press including a mold bearing carriage, a molding element mounted for movement in the carriage, a box casing embodying an eccentric strap movable with the element, means for operating the casing, rails mounted on the carriage, a
guide block having sliding cooperation with the rails, and a guide stud depending from the casing and mounted for free movement in the guide block in a direction at right angles to the movement of the block in the rails. Y
