COMBINATION-TOOL. 2
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 4, 1916. Serial No. 70,275.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Honaon H. HYER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at of rafters and other frames for buildings,
the inclination of stair carriages, the length of the steps,'height of 'the risers and for such like uses. a
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is employed in connection with an ordinary steel square whereby the pitches or angles of material employed in a building struc ture or the like may be readily ascertained without necessitating the employment of a plurality of instruments or mental exertion.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view throughthe same, taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the attachment in position on a rafter, plate or stud, and Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating the device employed for laying out the steps and risers in a stair carriage.
The stock 1 is in the nature of a straight bar provided with a medial line 2 and having its face, adjacent one of its ends reduced or of a. lesser thickness than the stock proper, as at 3. The stock to one side of the medial line 2 is provided with a longitudinal slot 4, and to the opposite side of said medial line with a longitudinally extending substantially L-shaped channel 5, the said channel entering from the end of said stock opposite that of its reduced portion 3. The stock to the opposite sides of the channel is graduated, one of the scales being preferably divided into one-tenth of inches, as indicated by the numeral 6, and the outer scale being divided into one-twelfth of inches as indicated by the numeral 7 Arranged in the substantially L-shaped channel 5 is a slide 8 which has its sides, at its inner edges flanged as at 9-9, so thatthe same in cross section, corresponds with the shape of the said L-shaped channel and fully fills the same. This slide, upon or adjacent its inner end is provided with a right angular member 10 and at a suitable distance from its said end with a second right angular member 11. The slide is provided with a scale, the same being preferably divided into inches, and the said slide, between the right angular members 10 and 11 are pro vided with verniers 12 and 13, the Vernier 12 being preferably divided into one one-hundredths of aninch and the part 13 into one one-hundred and forty-fourths of an inch. The verniers are each spaced a predetermined distance from the inner and straight edges of the right angular members 10 and 11, and the outer faces of these members are preferably rounded outwardly, as indicated by the numerals 1a and 15 respectively;
The reduced portion 3 is formed with a round opening 16, the same being centered from the medial line 2 and this opening 16 is adapted to receive a stud or pivot 17 provided upon the fiat clamping member 18. The member 18 is preferably rectangular in plan and has its opposite edges formed with outturned flanges 19 and 20, the flange 19 having one of its ends terminating in a line with the cent r of the pivot 17 or in a line with the axial center of the opening 16.
The pivot 17 is secured upon the stock by a suitable thumb nut 21, and the flange 20 of the holder member 18 has a threaded opening through which is passed the stem of an adjusting screw 22. This screw 22 is adapt- Patented Jan. 9,1917. 7
ed to engage with the inner edge of the tongue 23 of an ordinary carpenters square 21 and the blade 25 of the said square is adapted to be swung over the stock 1. The thickness of the clamping member or holder '18 corresponds with the depth of the reduced portion 3 of the stock so that the blade of the square will be free to pass over the face of the stock and also the outer face of the slide 8 is arranged flush with the gradthe slot 4: butheld in an adjusted position on the stock. The clamp is adapted to engageone of the edges of the blade 25 of the square to hold the same in such position, and by reference to the drawings it will be noted that one of the angle members 10 of the slide 8 will register with one of the graduations upon the square 2 L and direct the same to the outer scale 7 of the stock. The Vernier 12 is employed in connection with the markings upon the outer scale 7 and the Vernier 13 is employed with the markings upon the inner scale 6, and as stated, the said verniers are disposed a predetermined distance from each of the angular members 10 and 11 so that by consulting the same the smallest fraction of an inch may be readily ascertained. The angular member 10 is used when the device is employed upon, small work, such as for instance when'ascertaining the length of a step and the height of a. riser, the height of the riser being ascertained from the markings on the scale contacting with the end of the flange 19 or at the pivot point of the holder 18 and the inner end of the tongue and the connection of the tongue with the blade of the square and the length of the steps are ascertained by the distance between the right angular member contacting with one of the graduations and the end of the square or the portion of the blade at the juncture of the square and the length and distance between the cuts providing the step and risers are ascertained by the distance between the graduations upon both the tongue and blade of the square registering with the graduations upon the stock 1 for ascertaining the cuts of rafters, studs, plates, etc, wherein the blade of the square may be brought entirely outwardly from the stock 1, the same will be engaged by the outer right angular member 11, and whereby in connection with the Vernier 13, the proper angles or cuts will be ascertained as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination with a try-square including a blade having an angular tongue, of a graduated stock having a medial line extending the length thereof, said stock having one of its ends reduced, a holder member for the tongue of the try square arranged in said reduced portion and pivotally secured to the stock at the medial line thereof, said holder having side flanges, the ends of which termi nate in a line with the axial center of the pivot of the said holder, an adjusting element carried by one of the said flanges whereby the tongue of the try square may be secured upon the holder, the stock to one side of the medial line having a longitudinally extending slot, a clamping member passing through the slot and adapted to engage with the blade of the try square, the stock, to the opposite side of its medial line being provided with a longitudinal channel,
a graduated slide in the channel, and right angular members carried by the slide.
In testimony whereof I ali'ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
