To all whom it mayconcern Be it known that I, AUGUSTINE F. COMEAU, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of l\ Iaine,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Sc'reens and Similar Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window screens and similar devices.
It is designed to provide a device of the character described which may be placed in position outside the window by a person standing inside the window, which may be easily raised and lowered to cover either the lower or upper window sash, which may be locked on the inside so that it can not be raised by a person on the outside and which is adjustable laterally so as to fit closely window frames which may vary slightly in width.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of this application Figure 1 is an elevation of the outside of a window with my improved screen in position, a portion being broken away to show bolt hole; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inside of the screen, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line w00, Fig. 1.

In said drawings 2 represents the outside band strips of a window frame which serve to hold the upper sash 3 against outward displacement, said strips extending down to the sill and forming a space t between it and the head 5 to receive the upper sash and in which said sash is raised or lowered. In the inner edges of the band strips are vertical grooves 6, preferably lined with metallic grooved wear strips 7 adapted to fit into said grooves.
To illustrate the application and use of my invention I have shown it applied to a window screen, but it is not limited to screens. As shown the screen consists of sides 8 and 9, top 10, bottom 11 and screen mesh 12. One side of the screen frame, as 9 for example, may be composed of two overlapping L-shaped members 13 and 1 1, permitting the screen to be adjustable laterally. The side 8 is provided with retractable bolts 15 adapted to project into the groove in the which receives side 8 of the screen is pro-' vided with a series of recesses 19 deeper than the grooves, and one of the bolts, the lower for example, is long enough so that when brought opposite a recess and released it is forced into the recess by the action of the spring, locking the screen against vertical movement. The other side 9 is provided with similar bolts 20, one end being fixedly secured to the outside angle-shaped member and beingprovided on the inside with springs 21 interposed between brackets 22 on the frame and a lug 23 on the bolt, so that the screen will be laterally adjusted by the springs to make a tight fit when in place. The removable member at the top carries a cap 2a which covers the line of division between the two members and any open space there may be between them. The bolts project normally outwardly beyond the edge of the frame, but the bolts on side 8 are capable of being drawn into the edge of the frame to permit the screen to be placed in or removed from position. The screen is provided with a hand hold 25 secured to the bottom 11 of the screen frame.
To place the screen in position, a person standing in the room places the ends of the bolts on side 9 in the groove in the band strip and then draws in the bolts on the other side of the frame until their outer ends are flush with the edge of the frame, when the screen may be easily moved into position. Now, when the bolts are released they are impelled by the springs into the groove. One at least of the bolts on this side is arranged to pass beyond the bottom of the groove into one of the recesses to lock the screen in any given position. To raise the screen it is only necessary to draw in the locking bolt and the screen may then be frame is milled or in frames already set may be formed with a suitable rabbet plane and may or may not have the metal lining.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a rectangular frameand mesh provided on one side with guide members projecting beyond the outer edge of the frame and on the other side with two retractable bolts projecting normally beyond the outer edge of the frame, one projecting farther than the other, both serving as guide members and one serving as a locking member.
2. In a device of the character described, a rectangular frame and mesh provided on one side with rigid guide members projecting normally beyond the edge of the frame and on the other side with two retractable bolts projecting normally beyond the edge Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the frame, one projecting farther than the other, and means for holding them yieldingly in normal position, both serving as guide members and one serving as a look- AUGUSTINE F.
