To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAY H. MANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county ofLorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile or Motor- Cycle Horns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to automobile or motor cycle horns, and more particularly to such horns in which an electric or other suitable motor is employed to cause the ac,- tuation of the diaphragm, preferably through the rotation of a roughened wheel. As is well known, horns of this type are already in general use, so that the object of my invention is to improve upon this type of horn;
In modern practice automobile horns are employed frequently under the hood of an automobile in association with the power plant of the automobile, and it is highly desirable that the horn should occupy but little space, especially in a longitudinal direction, the idea being to provide a horn which will not interfere with the access to the other'machinery. The advantages ofsuch an arrangement will be appreciated,
' especially in connection with six and eight cylinder engines. Horns of this type have also come to be used upon motor cycles,
where the handle bars and other portions of the frame of the motor cycle are already crowded with machinery and accessories. It is very desirable that the horn employed should be small and that it should .not extend far to the rear of the handle bars.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of an electric motor upon which the field coil can be wound directly m a winding machine. This greatly -expedi-tes. and cheapens the manufacture of the horn,
because in the past, so far as I am aware. it has been necessary to wind the fieldjcoil independently of the pole piece, then mount it on the pole piece.

provide a condensed horn, and especially a flat horn, and at the same time toxpreserve .the efliciency of the horn, producing such a device which is capable of. making a loud signal.

Referring now to the drawing and to the embodiment of the invention illustrated therein, at 4 is shown a frame piece or supporting member, which is here illustrated as a ring of metal having a large opening 5 in the central portion thereof; The sound producing device, here shown as a sonorous diaphragm 6, is supported from this frame piece. -In the form shown this is connected to the front of'the frame piece by any suit-' able means, such as screws or bolts 7, 7 and 7 A casing front 8 is provided which is used in front of the. diaphragm and which is also connected to the member 4 by the members 7, 7 {and 7; The casing front is provided'with an opening 9 for the egress of sound waves and a resonator 10 may be mounted in this opening to direct and accentuate the sound waves. A bracket 11 may also be used to connect the horn to the vehicle.
In the embodiment shown, the motor is illustrated as an electric motor, which is shown at 12. The field of the motor is shown M313 and consists preferably of ayoke is shown at 19 and consists of a limb casing of soft iron. The field is provided with a plurality of Wings 14, 15 and 16, by which it is Connected to the member 4 by the use of screws or other suitable connecting means. 7 to perform the function of connecting the motor to the memberf4, in addition to connecting the diaphragm and casing front to the member 4. The armature of the motor is shown at 18. The coupling link 24 is provided With an opening 26 in which there is formed a bearing for one end 27 of the armature shaft. A removable link 30, preferably of brass is connected across the open end of the yoke l9, and is provided with an opening 31 to form a bearing for the other end of the armature shaft.
The commutator is shown at 32 and the roughened wheel at 33. An anvil 34 is mounted on the diaphragm, which is struck by the roughened wheel when the armature is rotated, causing the actuation of the diaphragm and the production of the'signal.
When it is desired to adjust the horn, that is, toadjust the wheel 33 with respect to the anvil 34, the nut 46 is'loosened and the bushing is rotated, turning against the bearing 60 and raising or lowering one end of the motor through the wing 14. enough to properly adjust the horn, and when the horn has been adjusted, the nut 46 is screwed down, locking the bushing in position, so that it cannot rotate. llt will readily be appreciated that this adjustment cannot be disturbed, no matter how hard the action of the roughened wheel upon the anvil and diaphragm, or however the horn is shaken, owing to the rotation of the motor armature, not only because the adjusting mechanism has been locked, but because it is so positioned that little or no efi'ect of suchv agitations will reach the adjusting mechanism.

I have illustrated this embodiment of my invention and the details thereof for the purpose of describing the same. It will be appreciated that departures may be made both from the form and details of the embodiment thus illustrated and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention, the invention being set forth in the appended claims.

In an automobile horn, the combination of a frame piece, a sonorous diaphragm, means to connect the diaphragm to the frame piece, an electric motor for operating the diaphragm, a field yoke for said motor, a'plurality of wings on said yoke, means to connect the motor through said wings to the frame piece, an armature for the motor mounted in the yoke, a limb on the yoke parallel to the diaphragm and .to the armature shaft, a second limb on the yoke parallel to the diaphragm but inclined to the armature shaft, an arm on said second named limb, a field winding on said arm, ali'nk integral with said limbs and connecting the same together at one end, a bearing in said link for the armature shaft, a second link for connecting the other ends of the limbs,

In an automobile horn, the combina-' tion of a fiat frame piece having its central portion cut away to form an opening therein, a sonorous diaphragm mounted on the front of the frame piece and extending over the opening, means to connect the dia-' phragm to the front of the frame piece, an electric motor connected to the back of the frame piece, including a field yoke, an armature and a commutator, a plurality of win s on said yoke through which the motor is connected to the back of the frame piece,
said yoke comprising two limbs and an integral interconnecting link, each limb and the link being connected to one of said wings, a second link removably connected to the free ends of the limbs, each link being provided with an opening, a bearing in each opening for an end of the armature shaft,-

14. In an automobile horn, the combination of a frame member, a vibratile dia phragm connected to the frame member, an electric motor connected to the frame member having operative connection with the diaphragm, said motor comprising a yoke having two limbs parallel to the diaphragm,
