APPLICATION HLED DEC.I4, I915.

ELECTRIC WINDOW-FAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1917.
Application filed December 14, 1915. Serial No. 66,746.
To all whom it on ay concern Be it known that I, ELLrs citizen of the United States, and a resident of Everett, in the county of Snohomish and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Window-Fans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for causing a circulation of air in a room or apartment, and the main object thereof is to provide such means within a window frame, and
which means serve the additional purpose;
of a closure for said frame when desired.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a face view of a window frame provided with my invention, partly in section; and Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. 1
In the drawings forming a part of this application I have shown, fragmentarily, a window frame 3 having the usual vertically movable sashes 4 slidable in runs 5, only one of said sashes being shown, in raised position to provide an open space for my invention.
My invention consists of a frame 6 closely fitted into the window frame in the space normally occupied by the lower sash and held in such position by means of catches 7 of any desired formengaged with the frame 3 in any desired manner, as by providing suitable recesses in the window frame therefor or by engagement thereof in one pair of the runs 5. v
The frame 6 presents an opening 8 into which a sash 9 is loosely fitted and pivoted at top and bottom as shown at 10 and 11 whereby the sash may swing about a vertical axis. The lower pivot 11 is downwardly extended and connected in any desired manner to an electric motor 12 arranged in a casing 13 beneath the frame 6 and secured thereto, terminals 141 and 15 being provided exteriorly of the casing 13 to which electrical conductors 16 and 17 may be attached,
E. IInrsLnY, a
these conductors being led to an ordinary lamp socket in the lighting system of the building.
When the motor 12 is energized the sash 9 is revolved and thus causes a circulation of air to and from the room in which the fan is arranged and, when the use of the device as a fan is not desired, thesash 9 may be arranged as a closure for the opening 8, and thus for the window, or said sash 9 may be arranged in an open position for ventilation of the room.
It will be noted that-the device as shown is readily detached from the window frame as a unit, but I may, if desired, make the device as a permanent structure in a window frame, or in a transom, as for instance in warm countries, this being optional with me as will be understood. 7
While I have shown one form of arrangement, I do not desire to limit myself thereto nor to any specific details of construction, provided that the device operates in the manner stated and for the purposes stated.
I may revolve the fan about a horizontal axis instead of the vertical axis shown, and I may make either the frame 6 or the fan of any desired sizeto adapt the invention to specific uses. 1 i
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, for use in a window, a frame normally free from said window, a sash pivotally mounted therein and closely fitting the same, a casing at the lower side of said frame, an electric motor in said casing and in operative connection with said sash, means for connecting said motor with a source of electrical energy, and means engaged in the, sash runs of said window for holding said frame in the window.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
