To all whom #may concern."
Be it known that I, CHARmsW. ARM- nUs'r, a'citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Chicago, in the countyof Cook-and' State of Illinois,- have vinvented a certainv new and useful Improvement in Brake- Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear,
concise, and exact description, reference be ing had ,to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisk specification.
My invention relates. to brakeshoes and has for its object the provision of an improved .back for brake shoes which shall be' simple in construction and easyof` manufacture.
My invention contemplates broadly. the provision of a blank in such a. way that a key lug may be formed from this blank without distorting the remaining portions of the blank, by which I mean the remain'-A ing portions of the blank are to be left substantially in the shape of an arc, circle or curve. The finger which forms the lug may be either in one piece, or may consisto a pair of fingers which coperate to form the key lug. f l
I will explain several forms of carrying out my invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawing, in whichz` Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a brake shoe having my improved back in positiong Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line b--b of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top view of the back before uniting with the shoe; Fig. 4 is a top view of a blank showing a modified form, and Fig. 5 is a top view of a blank showing another modified form.'
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, my improved back l is shown as mounted vin place within a shoe 2. Y The back 1 prefA drawn out from the body portion 3 to forml opposite sidesy of thekey lug. The fingers are bent upwardly substantially into l.-
shape and approach eachother from opposite sides, overlapping slightly 'at the central top portion, as more clearly apparent from Fig. 3- A key Slot 6 is ofcourse provided as readily understood. Openings 12 are left in the edges .of the fingers to permit the metalv of the shoe 2 to pass therethrough andmore thoroughly interlock and hold themin the proper position. It will be-seen from this that themetal for the key lug is yformed from the body of the back without 1n any way distorting this back except to give it the necessary curvature. I-Ioles 13 are provided in the body portion 3 to more thoroughly unite the back and the shoe.
n In Fig. 4,`I show a modified form along the same general lines as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, which modified form is shown merely ,in thejshape of a blank, this blank having the body portion 3 provided with holes 14 which'perform the same function as the .holes 13 in Fig. 3. formed. from the two fingers 15, and 15, 'which fingers are bent upwardly along the lines 16, 16, suitable holes 17 being provided morethoroughly to have the parts lmited together. The fingers 15 also have cut-away portions 18, which cut-away portions, when these fingers are bent into C- shape, aline to form the key slot. An extending portion 19 of these. fingers remains Specication of Letters Patent. v Patented @gea 26, g, l Application med February ia,- 191e. serial no. 79,237.
rl`he key lug is then horizontal, the fingers being bent again at from the line 22 to the line 23, extend vertically'from the line 23 to the line 20, and then again extend horizontally. The openings 18 aline to form the key lug. A. central strip 24 of the back remains intact for vstrengthening purposes. Again it will be 'seen that the back remains in its original condition except that it is given the necessary curvature. y v 4 In Fig. 5, I show a modied 'form of the invention in which the fingers 15a and 15- are drawn from the body portion 3 at right angles to the manner of drawing themin From what has been described it isthought the nature of my invention will be readily clear to those skilled in the art.
Having however thus described several forms which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
' 'shim posit/ely extending 1. A back for a brake 'shoe provided with a; key 1u said key lug consisting of two untwiste fingers drawn out of the body of the back without bending the remaining poi'- tions ofthe said back.
2..A back for a. brake shoe provided with a key lug, said key lug-consisting of two cooperatingg .interlocking fingers formed out o the bodi of the back.
for a. brake shoe provided with said key lug consisting of two op.- untwisted fingers drawn out of the body of the back without bending theA remainin portions of the said back.
4. A back or a a key lug, operating, ing ngers back.
5. A. back for a a. key lug. said key a' key lug,
interlocking oppositely extendformed out of the body of' the lug consisting of two iintwisted iingers drawn out of the -body of the back, each forming a portion of said lug without bending the remaining portions of the said back.
6. Aback for a brake'shoe provided with a key lug, said key lug consisting of two oppositely extending untwisted fingers formed out of the portion of said lug.
7 A back for a brake shoe provided with a key lug, said key lug consisting of two body of the back, in s brake shoe provided with said key lug consisting of twoco brake shoe provided with body of the back, eaeh forming a provided with the back within its edges.
10. A back for a. brake shoe provided with tending untwisted fingers drawn out of the one operation.
A11. A back for abrake shoe provided with two key lugs formed of twoopposi'tely .extending ingers drawn out of the back, each forming a' portion of said key lug.
12. A back for a brake shoe provided with a. ke lug consisting of two oppositely extending fingers drawn out of the body of the back, in one operation.
13. A back for a brake shoe havin stamped to form a holding lug bac-k.
In witness whereof, I myname this 16th day of February, A. D.
CHARLES AW. ARMBRUST.
