ticularly for the skiving of the edges of leather for use in the manufacture of boots or shoes. The invention however is not necessarily limited to this particular use as the same may be employed for skiving leather or other material for use in various arts.
The present invention pertains to the type of skiving machine known as the rotary band or box knife skiving machine, that is to say to that class where a rotary band or box knife is employed as distinguished from a stationary knife. I In the older machines of this type a feed roller and a presser foot or roller coacting with the feed roller are provided, said presser foot or roller being arranged on the opposite side of the knife edge and one of them or both parts being arranged to be placed in an oblique position, according to the inclination of the skived edge to be formed on the leather blank. This arrangement was rendered necessary in order to allow the edge to be skived of the blank subjected to the action of the knife to be bent in such a way as to enable the knife to sever the chip. With thick blanks, however, this bending of the blank requires a considerable expenditure of energy both by the machine and by the operator. In the machine according to the pres ent invention this drawback is avoided by so arranging; the feed roller with regard to the knife that the bending of the leather blank is rendered unnecessary.
In the drawings affixed to this specification the preferred form of a machine according to the invention is shown in elevation.
a is the machine frame, I) is the pressure foot vertically displaceable in said frame.
0 is the pressure roller arranged at the end of part Z) and adapted to be placed in an oblique position by well known means.
cl is the toothed feed roller, 6 is the ro- Specification of Letters Patent.

tary knife, f is the cutting edge ofsaid knife.
g is a guide plate serving as a guide for the edge of the leather blank.
The position of the feed roller (1 with regard'to the pressure roller 0 is such that a free passage for the leather blank is left between the rollers, and the leather blank introduced between the rollers with its edge touching the guide plate 9 will not lie fiat on the machine table, but will of itself assume as a whole an oblique position requiring no bending of the leather, the knife skiving the blank at the right angle. although the nmnber and shape of the single parts combined is not changed as compared with the cider machines, the mere change of position with regard to the feed and,
pressure rollers brings about the new re suit.
I claim 1. A. skiving machine comprising in combination a knife, a pressure roller having its work engaging face inclined to the act ing portion of the cutting edge of said knife, and a feed roller having an edge operating against the portion of such inclined face intermediate its ends to advance the work through the cutting operation.
2. A skiving machine comprising in combination a knife, a pressure roller having,
a straight work engaging face inclined to the acting portion of the cutting edge of said knife, and a feed roller having an edge operating against such inclined face to advance the work through the cutting operation.
3. A skiving machine comprising in combination a knife, a pressure roller having its work engaging face inclined to the act-- copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
