Description

C. R. ALLISON.
LID OPENER FOR BOXES.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 21. I916.

CHARLES R. ALLISON, OF PORT CARBON, PENNSYLVANIA;
LID-OPENER FOR BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2%, 1916.
Application filed February 21, 1916. Serial No. 79,742.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. ALLIsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Carbon, county of Schuylkill, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Lid-Openers for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a means by which a lid can be readily forced open and which can also be used to positively close the lid.
The invention is particularly adapted for that type of box used for blacking and other material, which requires that the box be sealed against the action of the air in order to keep the contents in the proper condition. Consequently, the lid is fitted tightly to the box and is exceedingly difficult to release without the use of a suitable tool.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1, is a perspective view illustrating a box with the lid closed and showing my invention; Fig. 2, is a perspective view, showing the lid detached from the body of the box; Fig. 3, is a front view of the box with the lid closed; Fig. 4, is arear view of the box with the lid closed; Fig. 5, is a sectional plan view on the line a-a., Fig. 3; and Figs. 6 and 7, are side views illustrating modifications of the invention.
1 is the body of the box.
2 is the lid having a flange which is forced down over the body of the box until it comes in contact with a rib 3. This lid tightly fits the box so as to make the package as air tight as possible' On the front of the box is a pin 4: on which is mounted a toothed wheel 5 and a handle 6 having two arms and preferably of the shape clearly shown in Fig. 1, although the form of the handle may be modified as desired. On the lid 2 of the box is a projecting rack 7, the teeth of which mesh with the teeth of the wheel 5 so that, on closing the box and when the wheel is turned in one direction, the lid will be forced down onto the body portion and, when the wheel is turned in the opposite direction, the lid will be forcibly removed Copies of this patent may be obtained. for
from the box through the action of the toothed wheel and rack. In order to properly locate the rack so that it will engage the teeth of the wheel, 1 form a projection 8 at the back of the body portion and shape the lid. as at 9, so that it will rest over the projection and thus hold the lid in the proper position. As a substitute for this construction, I may form a projection 10 on the body of the box so that it will be located directly back of the rack, as illustrated in Fig. 6, insuring the meshing of the teeth of the wheel with those of the rack. In some instances, the rack 7 may be fixed to the body l of the box and the toothed wheel 5 may be mounted on a projection of the lid 2*, as illustrated in Fig. 7, but I prefer the construction shown in the main figures of the drawing.
l Vhile I have illustrated a round body in the drawing, it will be understood that the box may be shaped as desired without departing from the essential features of the invention, and while I have indicated it as made of metal, it may be made of other material, if so desired.
I claim 1. The combination of a box; a lid fitting the box; a handled, toothed wheel on one element and a rack on the other element arranged to mesh withthe wheel so that, on turning the handle, the lid can be forced to the closed position or opened, as desired.
2. The combination in a box, of abody portion having a lid; a toothed wheel pivotally mounted on the body portion and having a handle; a rack secured to the lid and having teeth arranged to engage the teeth of the wheel; and means for locating the rack in respect to the wheel.
3. The combination in a box, of a body portion; a flanged lid; a handled, toothed wheel on one element; a rack on the other element arranged to engage the wheel; and a projection at the back of the body portion, the flange of the lid having a recess adapted to receive the projection whereby the rack is located in respect to the wheel.
CHARLES R. ALLISON.
