Patented Dec. 19, 191th Application led March 14, 1916. Serial No. 84,149.
To all whom it may concern Be .it known that I, HENRY R. JonNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newell, in the county of Butte and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automobile extractors, or devices whereby an automobile is enabled to eXtricate itself from a mired position by the power of the engine thereon, the object of thepresent invention being to provide in connection With a cable and drum therefor mounted on the frame of the machine, means for throwing said drum into and out of engagement with the engine shaft, whereby the drum maybe operated independently of the wheel driving mechanism of the machine thus enabling the full power of the engine to be utilized for winding the cable on the drum when the free end of the cable is secured to a tree, post or other anchoring device at a distance from the machine. y

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a drum and 2 a cable Wound thereon and preferably having one end fastened to the drum. The drum 1 is normally loose on `a shaft 3 extending centrally and longitudinally therefrom and journaled in hangers 4 and 5 adjacent to the ends thereof, said hangers being secured in fixed relation to the frame bars 6 of the machine.
Adjacent to one end of the drum 1, the shaft 3 has fast thereon a bevel gear 7 which meshes with and is driven by another bevel gear 8 fast on a short shaft 9 extending longitudinally of the machine frame and journaled in a hanger 10 secured to the frame. Fast on the same shaft 9 is a sprocket wheelV 11 from which a chain 12 extends around another sprocket. wheel 13 normally loose on the engine shaft 14. The sprocket wheel 13 is provided with a clutch face 15 adapted to be engaged by a clutch 16 keyed to the engine shaft as indicated at 17 but slidable to a limited extent longitudinally thereof. The clutch 16 is shifted by means of a lever 18, said lever being provided at one end with a fork 19 which `engages the clutch 16 and being fulcrumed between its ends at 2() on a bracket 21 fastencd'to the machine frame. end of the lever 18 is attached ah operating rod 22 which extendsrearwardly in order that it may be operated by the driver of the machine for the purpose of shifting the clutch 16 into and out of engagement with the clutch face 15 of the sprocket wheel 13 thereby locking the sprocket wheel 13 to the engine shaft 14: and causing the engine to revolve the drum 1 and wind the cable 2 thereon. At one end the drum 1 carries a pawl 23 which engages a ratchet wheel 24 fast on the shaft By moving the pawl 23 out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 24, the cable may be unwound rapidly from the drum and the free end thereof carried to a distant point and fastened to a suitable anchor. The pawl 23 is then re turned to its engagement with the ratchet Wheel 24 so that thereafter when the shaft 3 is driven, rotary motion will be imparted to the drum 1. y
In operation, when an automobile or similar vehicle equipped with the present invention becomes mired so that it cannot extricate itself by the traction of its own driving wheels, the operator dismounts from the machine, unwinds the cable 2, and secures'the free end thereof to a suitable anchoring device at any desired distance in front of the machine. He then throws the Vdog,r 23 into engagement with the ratchet position and advanced toward the point where the free end of the cable 2 han wen anchored. This operation may be repeated and continued until the wheels of the automobile rest on solid ground after which the To the Y other machine may be operated under its own power. l
-The mechanism above described is mostly concealed, the drum 1 being preferably locatecljust below the radiator indicated at 25.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:-
The combination with the .frame and engine of a motor vehicle, of a rotary drum, a flexible cable wound thereon. a shaft on Which Said drum is normally loose, means for connecting said drum to said shaft and disconnecting the same therefrom, a sprocket Wheel normally loose on the engine shaft, a
clutch keyed to and slidalfle upon the engine shaft and movable into and ont of engagement with said sprocket Wheel, clutch operating means, a cou'ntershaft extending ati-ight angles to the drum shaft and gea red thereto, a sprocket wheel fast on said countershat, and a chain extending around said sprocket Wheels.
