This invention relates to a lighting device and among other objects provides a simp e and effective contact arrangement for completing the circuit from a battery to a lamp and for locating the battery in its casing. The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to the following description of an "llustrative embodin'lent thcreo'lj' shown in the aceomrmnying drawing; wherein Figure 1 is a vertical section through an illustrative lighting apparatus.shown herein as embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of theapparatus shown in Fig. 1 with the cover ren'ioved. Fig. 3 is a plan-view of the cover inverted. The casing has a. eover 8 provided with an inwardly curved flange 8 with notches '8 adapted to be insertedover lmoblilie projeetions 8 adjacent thetop of the casing. A slight rotation of the cover after being thus inserted will lock the :hinie to theeasihg.
The casing may be provided with handles 9 and a bail 11. to permit the ready carrying of the same and manipulation asan exploring lantern. At oneside of the (lasing is an aperture having a flange 13 in which is secured a lamp socket 15 adapted to receive a ininiature cleetric lamp 17 of usual construetion. Eneircling said socket is a holder 19 secured to the easing; 1 by tabs 21 entered -tlirough slits in said casingand bent back against the inner wall ofsaid casing. The

The outer edge portion of the reflector is formed to present a. shoulder 2:": and a head 27. A glass 29 seated on said shoulder and is retained in position by a split ring 31 adapted to be snapped into said bead.
An important feature. of the invention relates to electricalconnecting means between the lamp and the battery for connecting one of the terminals of said battery to said lamp and positioning the battery in the easing. To accomplish this there is provided a spring linger 33 having its lower end eonneeted tothe easing by rivets 35. .A strip 37 of fiber or other appropriate insulation is interposed between said linger and aid casing. The finger is further insulated from said easing" by washers 39 (Fig.5) encircling said rivets. lhe eontaetfinger extends upward past the lamp socket in position to beengaged by a contact on the electric lamp bulb plug when the same is screwed into its socket. The curved periphery of the nut seats in the groove between the ribs of the finger and thereby tends to prevent any turning of the battery within the easing, and thereby prevents any breakingof the contactbetween said nut and said finger froinsue-h turning. This, as shown herein, is ac complished through the cover referred to. ()n the under face of said casing is a spring clip 43 mounted on a strip 45 of fiber or other suitable insulation material, said clip and strip being secured to said cover by rivets 47 passed through insulation washers 49 on the outer face of said cover. This clip as shown herein is substantially S-shaped with reverse bends presenting a bight 51 normally seated against said strip 45. To connect the binding post 5 with said clip there is provided an insulated wire 53 having metal eyes 55 at the ends thereof. One
of these eyes is inserted over the binding post 5and is secured in place by the nut 5 and the other eye is inserted over the free end of clip 43 past the 'bight 51 thereof. This eye is-preferably oblique to the length of the clip so that the sprln effect of the latter tends to press said eye at against the insulation strip 45 thereby securely locking said eye to said cover. It will be observed that the eye ma be very quickly inserted over the clip and snapped in place without the necessity of further manual'adjustment.
As stated, the clip is insulated from the cover. Hence the circuit is notecompleted to the casing. To accomplish this a switch device is. provided whereby the light may be turned on or off as desired. To accomplish this a switch member 57 is pivoted to the under face of the cover on a rivet 59. The tail end of the clip 51 is extended somewhat beyond the insulation strip 45 as at 61 and overlaps one end of the lever 57. The lever extends outward through a slot in the'cover presentin a de endin rasping ortion 63 convenien tly a jacent tfie handle s. When the switch lever 57 is turned to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 it will contact with the tail end 61 of. the clip and thus the circuit will be completed through the cover and casin to the lamp thereby lighting the same. W en, however, the switch lever is swung to its position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, its connection with the tail end of the clip is broken and the circuit to the lamp is broken. The tail end of the clip may have sufficient resilience to press the lever against the under face of the cover and thereby hold the same against inadvertent dislocation.
Having described one illustrative embodiment of the invention without limiting the e described the electrical same thereto, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a battery having tenminals, a battery casing carrying an electrically operated mechanism and connections between said battery terminals and the mechanism including a springmember car;

5. The combination ofa battery having a terminal with a casing; a cover for said casin and means to complete the battery circuit including a spring clip attached to the cover and a connection from said terminal to said clip having an eye adapted to be snapped over said clip.
6. The combination of a battery having a terminal with a casing, a cover for said casing and means to complete the battery circult including a spring clip and a flexible connection from said terminal to said clip having an eye adapted to be inserted over said clip and locked thereby.
7. The combination of a battery havin a terminal with a casing, a cover for sai easmgand means to complete the battery conne'ccircuit including a spring clip attached to the cover, an insulation member interposed between said clip and said cover and a connection from. said terminal to said clip having, an eye for insertion over said clip and adapted to be locked thereby.
