TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1216.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN ROGGINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in tables and more especially to extension tables and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is simple and eiiicient in use.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
rIhe invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and 1n which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a table embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a side view of the same partially broken away, Fig. 3, an enlarged longitudinal section taken through the central portion of the table., Fig. 4, a transverse section, Fig. 5, a hori* Zontal section taken just under the table top, Fig. 6, a detailed section showing a tightened lever employed in the construction, and Figs. 7, 8, 9 and 10 are detailed sections of guides employed in the construction.
rIhe preferred form of construction illustrate-d in the drawings comprises a supporting pedestal 11 having a supporting` board 12 extended across the top thereof. Guides 13 are secured to the sides of the supporting board 12, said guides each comprising two guide channels 14 and angle members 15 and 16 carrying grooved rollers 17 running in said channels and themselves riding upon grooved rollers 18 secured to the sides of said guides. Each of the angle members 15 and 16 is provided with a stop bar 19 running in the corresponding channel 14 and arranged to engage against a block 20 secured at the end of the corresponding `channel so as to prevent complete separation of said guide members as will be readily understood. Each of the angle members 16 is secured to the under side of table part 21 by means of screws 22 and each of the angle members 15 is secured to the under side of the opposite table part 23 by means of screws 24. Sprockets 25 and 26 are mounted upon support board 12 and an endless sprocket chain 27 runs over said sprocket wheels. One side of sprocket chain 27 is connected by means of a bar 28 with the under side of table part 21 and the other side of sprocket chain 27 is connected by means of a bar 29'with the other table part 23 as indicated. By this arrangement it will be observed that the table parts 21 and 23 are arranged to slide relative to each other so as to permit of their separation orl approach and the action of chain 27 causes said table parts to move simultaneously and in unison with each other.
A. segment plate 30 is arranged adjacent sprocket 25 and is provided with an upturned edge 31 having ratchet teeth formed therein. An operating lever 32 is pivoted on plate 30 and is provided with a tooth 33 at one edge engaging said ratchet teeth. Lever 32 carries a rack bar 34 sliding in a guide 35 on plate 30 and provided with ratchet teeth 36. Sprocket 25 is provided with gear teeth 37 in the form of pins adapted to coperate with ratchet teeth 36 to effect operative connection between rack bar 30 and lever 32. A spring 38 normally holds rack bar 30 in engagement with teeth 37 and the opposite end of said rack bar is provided with a cam surface 39 coperating with a pin 40 on plate 30 and adapted to force rack bar 34 out of engagement with teeth 37 at the end of the movement of operating lever 32 to the left as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6. The arrangement is such that when the table parts 21 and 23 have been separated sufficiently for the insertion of additional leaves 41 the lever 32 may be swungto the right as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6 thus effecting engagement of rack bar 34 with teeth 37 and rotation of sprocket 25. This rotation of sprocket 25 eiects travel of chain 27 and draws or tightens the table parts 21 and 23 together on the leaves 41 thus eecting a smooth and close joining between the parts when the table is eX- tended.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A table comprising a support; two separable table parts slidable in said support; van endless flexible element arranged under said table parts; anroperative. connection between opposite sides of said element and said table parts; a member pro-v vided with gear teeth operatively `connected with said flexible element; a rack bar shiftable into and out of engagement with said gear teeth; and means for manipulating said rack bar for drawing saidtable parts togethensubstantially as described.
Vof engagement with said gear teeth; and
means Vfor manipulating Vsaid rack bar to draw said table parts together, substantially asidescribed.
3. A table comprising a support; two` separable table parts slidable in said support; sprocket wheels on said support under l said table parts; an endlessl chain running on said sprockets; bars connected at one of their ends to opposite sides of said chain and at their other ends with the under sides of said table parts; gear teeth on one of said sprockets; an operating lever; a toothed segment coperating with said lever; a rack bar pivoted on said lever in coperating relation with said teeth; a spring normally holding said rack bar in engagement with said teeth; and means for disengaging said rack bar from said teeth at the end of the operative movement of said lever; substantially as described.
4. A table comprising a support; two separable table parts slidable in said support; sprocket wheels on said support under said table parts; an endless chain running on said sprockets; bars connected at one of their ends to opposite sides of said chain and at their other ends with the undersides of said table parts; gear teeth on one of said sprockets; an operating lever; a toothed segment cooperating with said lever; a rack bar pivoted on said lever in cooperating relation with said teeth; a spring normally holding said rack bar in engagement with said teeth; and a pin on said segment; there being a cam surface on said rack bar cooperating with said pin for disengaging said rack bar from said teeth at the end of the operative movement of said lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN ROGGINGER.
