To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, FRANK L. PURGELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frederick, in the county of Tillman and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoe- Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention is an improved type of clamp for rigidly holding a hoe in in verted position while filing the same, the object being to provide a device of this class which may be inexpensively constructed entirely of metal.

With this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clamp in use; Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively front and rear elevations thereof; Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the device in folded position; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the hoe blade support and immediately adjacent parts.

In specifically describing the construction shown in the drawings above briefly described, similar characters will be placed on corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be herein made to the numerous elements by their respective indices. To this end, the numeral 1 designates a horizontal channel iron bar adapted to receive therein a portion of the hoe blade 2, when said blade is inverted as shown in the drawings. In order to compensate for the rib 3 on the front side of the blade 2, by which rib the shank is usually joined to said blade, one of the side flanges of the bar 1 is stamped outwardly as disclosed at 5, the other flange of said bar as well as the bottom thereof being formed with a notch 6 through which the shank 4: may pass.

Secured at their upper ends to the ends of the bar 1, are two upwardly converging legs 7 which will preferably be formed of angle iron as shown, an additional leg 8 being also provided, said last named leg being likewise constructed of angle iron and Specification of Letters Patent.

being bifurcated at its upper end as disclosed at 9. The fur-cations 10 of the leg 8 are pivoted to the upper ends of the legs 7 whereby said leg 8 may fold inwardly between the other legs as shown in Fig. 4:, and a cross bar 11 is secured at its ends to the aforesaid furcations 10, said bar being adapted to support thereon the handle 12 of the hoe.

For the purpose of rigidly holding the hoe in the device, an upright hook 13 is carried by a horizontal lever 14, said hook being adapted to take over the shank 4, while the lever may be forced downwardly and locked. This effectively retains the blade 2 in the holder 1 and maintains the handle 12 in contact with the rest 11. The lever 14 is fulcrumed at 15 to the upper end of one of the legs 7, said lever passing through the vertical slot 16 in one flange of the other leg, which flange is provided with ratchet teeth 17 for engagement by the laterally struck edge 18 of the lever, this arrangement serving to guide the lever in this movement and to lock it in its adjusted position.

Any suitable connection may be employed between the hook 13 and lever 14, but the latter is preferably provided with a laterally extending ear 19 through which the lower end of said hook passes slidably, a coiled spring 20 being interposed between said ear and a stop 21 on the lower extremity of the aforesaid hook whereby a yielding connection is provided between the hook and lever. A second stop 22 is carried by the hook 13 above the ear 19 to prevent excessive downward movement of said hook.

For the purpose of holding files, one leg 7 is provided with a slot 23, and a similar slot 24 is formed in a horizontal brace bar 25 which extends between the two legs 7, diagonal braces 26 preferably extending from said legs to the bar 25.

By constructing the device as shown and described, it may be inexpensively manufactured, yet it will be highly eiiicient and durable and will fulfil a long felt need.

Obviously, although I have described and shown a number of specific details of con struction, numerous changes may be made within the scope of the invention as claimed, without sacrificing the main advantages thereof.

I claim as my invention:

1. A hoe clamp comprising a one piece rest having a channel to receive therein the upper edge of a hoe blade, and means for holding said blade rigidly in said channel.

2. A hoe clamp comprising a horizontal one piece rest channel iron bar to receive therein the upper edge of a hoe blade, a pair of legs secured at their upper ends to the ends of said bar, and means for holding the blade rigidly in the channel of said bar.

3. A hoe clamp comprising a pair of legs having at their upper ends a rest to support thereon a hoe blade in inverted position, a horizontal lever pivoted to one of said legs, a hook extending upwardly from said lever to engage the shank of the hoe, and means for locking said lever against movement.

4. A hoe clamp comprising a pair of legs having at their upper ends a support upon which a hoe in inverted position is adapted to rest, one of said legs having a vertical slot and ratchet teeth at one edge of said slot, a horizontal lever extending through the slot in the aforesaid leg and fulcrumed to the other leg, said lever having means to engage said ratchet teeth, and a hook rising from the lever to engage the shank of the hoe.

5. A hoe clamp comprising a support upon which a hoe blade is adapted to rest in inverted position, a second support spaced laterally from the first named support and adapted to receive thereon the handle of the hoe adjacent the shank thereof, and means for exerting a downward force on said shank.

6. A hoe clamp comprising a horizontal channel iron bar adapted to receive therein a hoe blade in inverted position, a pair of legs secured to and depending from the ends of said bar, a third leg having a bifurcated upper end whose furcations are pivoted to the upper ends of the other legs, said third leg extending in a direction transversely of the aforesaid channel iron bar, a handle supporting bar secured at its ends to the furcations of the third leg and adapted to support thereon the handle of the hoe adjacent the shank thereof, and means for exerting a downward force on said shank.

7. A hoe clamp comprising a one piece channel iron bar with its channel positioned upwardly, said bar having a notch in one of its sides and across its bottom and having its other side struck outwardly opposite said notch, the notch and the outwardly struck portion being adapted to accommodate the shank of a hoe when the upper edge of the hoe blade is recei cd in the aforesaid channel, and means for rigidly holding said blade in the channel.
