IMPROVEMENT lN NOZZLES AND CAPS FOR OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,702, dated November 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JABnz A. BOSTWIGK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Tap for Oil-Cans and other Vessels, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the combination of a valve moving upon a screw projecting centrally through the discharge-aperture'of an oil-can or other vessel from a bracket or transverse bar Wiflllll, to control the discharge of fluids from the vessel, with an exterior plate made to span the nearest corner of the vessel and to form a spout or conductor to direct the flow of fluids issuing therefrom.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top view of a can provided with my improved tap, and Fig. 2 a diametric section thereof.
The discharge-aperture of the can is at first herm etically sealed and subsequently defined by means of a disk or nozzle, A, stamped up solidly in the customary manner out of sheet metal, and provided with a scored ring on its top, embracing acircular section to be punched out when the can is to be opened. To the under side of this nozzle-piece A a supporting-plate or bridge piece, B, is secured diametrically. This transverse plate is so proportioned as to leave ample openings 011 either side thereof for the passage of fluids into or out of the can through the discharge-opening in the disk or nozzle. E is a pin threaded at its upper end, and secured to the bridge-piece B so as to project upward centrally, under, or through the opening in the nozzle A.
D is a valve or plain cap of metal, made somewhat larger than the nozzle A, so as to overlap it, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and provided on its under side with a lining or packing, W, of leather, cork, or other elastic material, to form a close joint with the edges of the opening in the nozzle, and with a central nut, O, to receive the screw E. F is a strip or plate secured to the upper edge of the projecting rim or joint on the head of the can H, at the corner thereof adjacent to its discharge-aperture, so as to span the corner diagonally, as illustrated in Fig. l. A small aperture, s, is pierced in this plate close to the corner of the can, and the plate thus constitutes a lip and spout to catch and collect the fluid as it flows from the nozzle A, and to discharge it conveniently in a single stream at the corner of the can.
I claim as my invention- 1. The within-described tap for an oil-can or other vessel, constructed of a valve, D, provided with a threaded seat, (J, to receive the end of a screw, E, projecting from an inner support out centrally through the dischargeaperture of the can, and combined with a lip-plate, F, spanning the corner of the can, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
