3e it known that- I, ERNEST ALBERT lvarrs, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Paris, in the Department of the Seine, and Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cinematographic Projecting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to moving picture projecting machines, and more particularly, to the kind in which electrical light and incandescent lamps are used, and the object of the invention is to provide a self-contained, safe and simple apparatus adapted for use by persons not skilled in the art and at any place whether or not it has independent electrical current or any other appliances which were hitherto necessary for moving picture projections. These objects are attained by the arrangen'lent shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the machine; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; and Fig. 3, aplan view showing the apparatus ready for use.
In order to simplify the handling of the machine and reduce its dimensions and weight, all its parts have been reduced in size, number and weight and mounted on the same framing supported by a common plate, which facilitates placing of the machine on any fiat surface.
As may be seen from the drawings, the various parts have been located relatively one to the other so as to make their co6p eration easy and have all the parts coordinated and depending upon the main shaft and a toothed drum mounted thereon.
A base or plate 1 supports the frame 2, which is preferably formed as an open casting. ()n the front of said frame are located the various optical parts and a convenient intermittent motion device and obturator preferably inclosed in case 3, in front of which the focusing lens 4 is mounted.
5 denotes the film gate or passage in which the film is moved intermittently, as usual.
The condenser is located in the tubular part 6, and T denotes the tubular casing inclosing an electric incandescent lamp. This casing-containing lamp is detachable to permit of the electric lamp being changed and adjusted, if and when desired.
In casing S, placed on the upper side edge of frame 2, are contained the necessary gear- 11 mounted on a speed regulating device 12 for the generator 9. These parts provide the necessary electrical energy to the niachine and automatically control the mechanism producing the light in order to avoid excess of current which would result in the destruction of the incandescent lamp; said parts are also driven by the main shaft.
Behind the above-described elements is a cover 13 through the center of which passes a shaft 1% to which are connected driving means to work the machine, in this particular instance. a crank handle 15. A. toothed drum 16 is also mounted on the main shaft and its object is to control the film, the upper surface of the drum feeding the film to the film gate and the lower surface carrying the film back to the lower reel where it is automatically rewound. Steady roller guides 17 are placed above and below cover 13. Two movable roller guides 18, mounted on movable spring latches 19, are mounted so as to enable easy adjustment of the film which is at the same time pressed against the feed drum. thus insuring a correct feeding, the film perforations being engaged in the projections 20 of the feeding drum 16.
A guide 21 mounted on an adjustable arm is used as a bridge for the passage of the film from the toothed drum to the film gate. The rear part of the frame comprises two reels and 2+ on their respective spindles 25 and 26, arranged preferably one above the other in vertical position in order to reduce the space and facilitate unwinding and rewinding. The spindle 20 is also provided with a driving pulley QT and coupling device The wind-olf reel 23 may be rotated by hand by means of a gear wheel 2!) having internal teeth, mounted on a spindle 30 and driving a cog wheel 31, keyed to the spindle 25 of the wind-olf spool 23. 3y a suitable manipulation of the clutch device 528, the shaft 20 may he made to turn freely in either direction. thus permitting the film to be rewound on to the reel 25, from the reel 24. without being carried back through the projecting portion of the device.

In a. moving plcture pro ecting machine, the combination of a supporting base a main driving shaft supported approximately centrally over said base, a film-feeding drum on said driving shaft, an optical system supported adjacent one end of said base at one side of the driving shaft a windof? reel and a Wind-on reel supported in vertical alinement adjacent the opposite end of said base and at the opposite side of the driving shaft, a separate shaft for each reel, a belt-drive connection between the main driving shaft and the shaft of the Wind-on reel, clutch mechanism for releasing said belt-drive connection, and means for operating said wind-oif reel independently of said driving shaft whereby a film may be Wound directly from the wind-on reel to the Windoif reel without passing through said optical system, said means comprising a gear secured to the spindle of the wind-off reel, an internally toothed Wheel adapted to actuate said gear, and an operating handle rotating with said wheel.
