EDWARD S. AMROCK, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
CAN-COVER.
Application filed November 29, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, EDWARD S. AMRocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Can-Cover, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a means for attaching a cover to a garbage can, so that the cover may swing vertically to and from closed position, the construction being suchthat the cover can be removed onlyby the garbage collector, at the time the contents of the can are dumped, it being impossible for unauthorized persons to remove the cover.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type towhich the present invention appertains.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of'the invention.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 shows the invention in top plan; Fig. 2 is a iragmental side elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional figure illustrating the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. tis a fragmental side elevation showing a modified form of the invention; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional figure wherein sundry parts appear in elevation, the figure illustrating the modification shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a sectional detail of the locking screw, the parts shown in Fig. Gbeing ap licable to either form of the invention. ig. 7 is a side elevation of the pivot bolt.
The numeral 1 indicates a garbage can provided with a cover 2. The cover 2 may carry a handle 3 as is common. The handle 3 is not a mandatory part of the present invention, but when the device forming the subject matter of this application is used in connection with covers having the handle 3, the handle 3 may be permitted to remain.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided an arm 4 attached to the cover 2 by means of rivets 5 or otherwise,

projecting beyond the extension 7 having angularly disposed edges 8 and 9. The extension 7 of the arm is received between cars 10 formed at the upper end of a spindle 11, there being a shoulder 12 in the spindle, between the ears. By means of a pivot element 50, the extension 7 is united with the ears 10. When the cover 2 is swung to an open position, the edge 9 of the extension 7 coacts with the shoulder 12 and limits the rearward swinging movement of the cover.
The spindle 11 preferably is of rectangular cross section and is received in and held against rotation by,a socket 142 embodying a foot plate 15 secured by means of rivets 16 or otherwise to the can 1. In the outer edgeof the spindle 11 are formed a plurality of seats 17, any one of which may be'engaged by a set screw 18 threaded into the back of the socket 14. The set screw 18 may be variously constructed without jeopardizing the utility of the invention. In the present embodiment of the invention, but not of necessity, the set screw 18 is provided with a socket 19 adapted to receive the square shank 20 of a key 21. If desired, the spindle 11 may be provided with openings 23, any one of which may be alined with openings 22 formed in the opposed sides of the socket 14. Through the openings 22 and 23 may be passed the shackle 24 of a pad lock25.
It will be seen that through the instrumentality of the construction above de scribed, the cover 2 may be securely attached to the can 1 for swinging movement in a vertical plane, it being impossible for unauthorized persons to remove the cover, bodily, and a loss of the cover being unlikely. WVhen the garbage collector desires to remove the cover, this operation maybe brought about by loosening the set screw 18 or by removing the pad lock 25 or both. Either the pad lock 25 or the set screw may be used to the exclusion of the other, but when both are used, the inner end of the set screw, engaging the seats 17, constitute a means for lining up the openings 22 and 23 to receive the shackle 24 of the padlock 25.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and i, a foot plate 26 is secured to the cam and carries an angular spindle 27. The lock and the set screw 29 are of the form hereinbefore described. The arm 31 is secured to the cover of the garbage can and is pivoted as shown at 32 to ears 33 constituting a part of a socket 28 receiving the upper end of the spindle 27 removably. The arm31 is provided ivit'h anend edge 35 adapted to coact with an inclined shoulder '34: on the socket to limit the rearward swinging movement of the can cover.
T he device 7 forming the subject matter of this application comprises, briefly considered, in combination with a receptacle and a cover, a vertically movable carrying member, means for locking the carrying member to the can "against vertical movement; and a hingeelen'ient connecting the car-rying member with the cover to permit the cover to move vertically, as distinguished from "a horizontal or lateral movement.
:;-\lthough the part 1 has been described hereinbefore as a garbage can, it Will b'e understood that the structure is of utility in connection With receptacles of every sort embodying a cover, 'andadapted to be h'andled by'a collector.
V The invention may comprise a movable la'tch 7 6-having a slot '77 receiving ascrew 78 01 other holding device which entersithe spindle l1,the latch'beingprovided'at its upper end with a linger piece '79 whereby it maybe manipulated, the latch terminating at its lowerend in-spac'ed legs 80. The pivot bolt may be circumscribed by a groove 75, 'adaptedtoreceive the legs 80 of the latch it being'possible to'tighten down the screw'78'to hold the-latch in place. This portion of the structure is of peculiar utility when it is desired to shipthe structure in small compass, it being possible, by looseningthelscreiv 78 and by lifting .the latch'76 to \vithdraw 'tliepivot bolt 59.,the cover in this --manner being disconnected from the spindle 11.
Having thus described the inventiom-what is claimed is 1. In a deviceo'f the class'descri-bed, a can; a cover therefor; an'armsecured to the cover; cooperatingelements comprising a spindle and a socket receiving-the spindle removably; one of said cooperating elements being attached to the-can; means forpivota T connecting the other of said cooperatin'g elements to the arm-t0 permit a vertical swinging movement of the cover to and from a closed posltion; and a movable element under'tliecontrolofan'operator and engaging the said cooperating elements to hold the same united.
In a device of the class described, a can; a cover therefor; an arm secured to 13l16COV8l-; cooperating elements comprising a spindle and a socket receiving the spindle removably; one otsaidcooperatmg elements being attached to the can; means for p'ivotally connectingthe other of said cooperating elements to the arm to permit a vertical swinging unov'ement ofthe cover toand from a closed position; n set screw threaded into one of said cooperating elements -and engagjing the other of said cooperating elements; a removable key; and interengaging elements on the said'screw 'andth'e key.
In a device of the class described, a can ya cover therefor an arm secured to =the co' ver; cooperating elements comprising a spindle and a "socket receiving the spindle removably, one of saidcooperating elements being attached -"to =the=cam'; means for pivotally c onne'ctingthe other of saidcoiiperating elements withthe arm toipermit vertical swinging inovement oi th'e cover to and-from a closed position; and apad lock forming an operative connection between said cooperatinp; elements.
4. In a deviceof 'the class described, a can a cover therefor cooperating elements interen'g'ag'ed for relative 'vertical sliding movement but against rotation about av'en ti'cala xis; -m'eans for securing on'eo'f said cooperating. elements permanently to the cover; means for securing theother OTE'SEllfl eoe emnn elements permanently to the side Wall. of the can adjacent the toptof the canya pivot membernniting said cooperat ingelements toipermit averti'calswingi g mowmentbf the cover; and releasablem'eans under the control ofnn operator and uniting the said coeperating elements to prevent relativevertical movement therebetween.
