ROBERT J'. ROTT AND WILLIAM E. HANNA, OF WEBSTER GROVES, MISSOURI.
PLOW-TONGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 17, 1915. Serial No. 34,702.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ROBERT J. Ron and WILLIAM E. HANNA, citizens of the United States, residing at Webster Groves, in the county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Tongs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plow tongs. I
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective implement for handling plowshares so as to firmly clamp and hold the share while the same is being operated upon for sharpening or the like.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which will effectively hold the 'share so that the same can not slip from the grasp while being acted upon.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tongs showing the jaws holding the plowshare to be sharpened, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tongs.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 and 11 represent a pair of handles, the inner ends of which are respectively turned at an obtuse angle to the handle as shown at 12 and 13. These portions are pivotally connected at 14, the portion 12 being continued into an elongated flat jaw member 15 while the portion 13 curves upwardly into a loop 16, the terminal of which is disposed adjacent the jaw 15 where it is provided with a transverse head 17.
Copies of this patent'may be obtained. for
In the use of the device the jaw 15 is engaged under the share and the loop 16 straddles the flange 18 of the share 19. The transverse head engages on the face of the share just inwardly of the flange 18. Thus when the handles 10 and 11 are firmly drawn together the jaw member 15 and the transverse head 17 will be brought into firm gripping contact with the lower and upper faces of the share. These jaw portions are of such width that there will be no rocking movement laterally on the jaw 15 by reason of its engagement with the flange 18.
What is claimed is:
A tongs for holding a plowshare comprising a pair of handle shanks each having one end extending at an obtuse angle to the body of the shank, the extended ends being pivotally connected between their extremities, one of said ends being continued beyond the pivot to form a jaw member elongated substantially at an obtuse angle to the body of the end and shaped to form a concave nose adapted to lie along the side of a plow- Patented Nov. 14, 1916. r
share, the remaining extended end being formed with a U-shaped portion opening toward said nose intermediate of the length of the nose, said U-shaped portion being adapted to embrace the flange of a plowshare and being provided with a transversely disposed elongated nose adapted to fit in the angle between the body and flange of a plowshare.
In testimony whereof, we aflix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
