Description

EDGAR ROUSE SUTCLIFFE, F LEIGH. ENGLAND.
V MANUFACTURE or TILES, ROOF-SHEETS, AND THE LIKE.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR RoUsnSUT- GLIFFE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Leigh, Lancashire, England, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Tiles, Roof-Sheets, and the like, of which the following is a specifica- 7 tion. a
This invention relates to the manufacture of tlles, roof sheets and the like and it has for its objects totmanufacture such goods economically and to produce goods that are weather resisting and durable.
It is well known to produce artificial stone and like material from such substances as sand and lime which are formed into a pasty mass and molded under pres-' sure and afterward subjected to treatment with steam for hardening purposes. It has also been proposed to form slabs from molded masses of clay or other like sub-*' "stance mixed with asbestos and a binding material such as sodium silicate, by pressing them while moist between metal plates in association with heating chambers through which steam is passed.
According to the invention slabs or sheets are formed from sand or like substances and lime :and are indurated while submitted to pressure.
The invention comprises the process as hereinafter described.
In carrying the invention into efiect I mix sand and lime in the proportion of 4 to 5 of sand to 1 of lime and I produce a liquid slip therewith. I mix'with this slip, asbestos fiber beaten up previously into a pulp with Water or otherwise, the quantity used being, for example, 15' per cent.-
reckoned on the "finished weight. I then press this liquid mixture in the molds of a suitable press. The mold is provided with a sacking R either with or without a superposed paper sheet. The pressing operation 1s carried out Specification of Letters Patent.
or other suitable filter sheet and Thepressed slabs or sheets are Patented Nov. a, rare.
Application filed October 2, 1914. Serial No. 864,688.
be expressed from the slabs or sheets. The
slabs or sheets are then separated from the filter sheets and again piled one upon the other with sheets interposed of sheet iron or other suitable material and again pressed so that thus the slabs or sheets are provided With smooth faces. ber of such sheets or slabs together so as to retain them under pressure and I place the sheets within a chamber where they may be subjected to the action of steam at a high or low pressure, so that they may be thus indurated in a manner similar to that usually employed in the production of lime and sand bricks.
I advantageously use sand which is the refuse of' glass polishing. This material is eminently suited for the purpose ofv the invention by reason of its fine condition, but sand from any other suitable source may be used which may be specially pre pared or ground for thepurpose together with the lime. This operation may be carried out wet. I may, for example, usethe silicious waste from gold orother mines and I may even use blast furnace or other I then clamp a numslags, or material suchas pozzuolana found inItaly and elsewhere.
Iclaim: v
1. A method of manufacture of tiles, roof sheets .and the like from 'fine sand and lime,
consisting in mixing the fine sand and hme together and producing a liquid slip, mcorporating asbestos fiber with the said liquid s1ip,compressing the liquid mixture within a mold for removing the main part of the water -it contains, said mold being provided with filter cloths, removing. the sheets or slabs thus-produced, compressing the sheets or slabs between the filter cloths for further slip, compressing the liquid mixture within a mold for removing the main part of the water it contains, said mold being provided with filter cloths, removing the sheets or siabs thus produced, compressing the sheets or slabs between the filter cloths for further reducing their content of water, removing porating asbestos fib'er with the said liquid steam and compression mechanically applied.
the filter cloths, and then indurating the slabs or sheets by their subjection to the action of steam and compression mechanically applied.
5 3. A method of manufacture of'tiles', roof sheets and the like from fine sand and lime,
consisting inmixing the fine sand and lime together and'producing a liquid slip, 'mcorporating asbestos fiber with the said liquid slip, compressing the liquid mixture within a moldfor removing the main part ofthe water it contains,'saidmold being provided with filter cloths, removing the sheets or slabs'thus produced, compressing the sheets or slabs between the filter cloths for further. reducing their content of water, removing the'filter cloths, interposing metal sheets between the respective slabs, and indurating 2 0- the said slabs by subjecting them to the action of steam and to compression mechanically applied. 0 l
4. A method of manufacture of tiles, roof sheets and the like from fine sand' and lime, consisting in mixing the fine sand and lime together and producing a 'liquidslip, incorslip, compressing the liquid mixture within a mold upon filter cloths for removing the main part of the water it contains, saidmold being provided with 'filter cloths, removing the sheets or slabs thus produced, compress- .ing the sheets .or slabs between the filter cloths for furtherreducing their content of water, and then indurating the slabs or sheets by their subjection to the action 01 5. A method of manufacture of tiles,'roof sheets and the like from fine sand and lime,
consisting in mixing the fine sand and lime together and producing a liquid slip, incorsuitable hardmaterial interposed, and then indurating the said slabs by subjecting them to the action of steam and to compression mechanically'applied,
j 6. Amethod of manufacture of tiles, roof sheets'and the like from fine sand and lime,
consisting in mixing the fine sand and lime together and producing a liquid slip, incorporating asbestos fiber therewith, which fiber is first beatenfiup into a pulpwith water, compressing the liquid mixture Withilba, mold for removing the main part of the water it contains, said mold being provided with filter cloths, removing the sheets or slabs thus produced, compressing the sheets or slabs'between the filter cloths for further reducin their content of water, .and then indurating the slabs or sheets by their subjection to the action of steam and compression mechanically appliedl.
