HAND FIRE EXTINGU ISHER. APPLICATION FILED MAY 24. 1916.

HARRY M. IVIQGASLIN, OF Ell-MIRA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN LA FRANCE FIRE ENGINE COMPANY, INC., F ELMIRA, NEW YORK, A. CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
HAND FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
Application filed May 24, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY M. MoCAsLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is a full and clear specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in the type of hand operated portable fire extinguishers, in which av liquid ex tinguishing compound is forced through a nozzle leading from the lowest point in the extinguisher container by a hand operated pump. Tn this type of extinguisher the discharging nozzle hasheretofore been arran ed to extend axiall from one end of the extinguisher container, with the result that the range of action of the extinguisher has been limited to directions below the horizontal planeofthe hand of the operator. This limit as to range has been obviated in those machines having gravitating discharging pipes for maintaining communication between the nozzle and the low part of the extinguisher in all positions, but the addition of such devices increased the expense and complexity of the extinguishers.
The present invention consists in providing a hand operated fire extinguisher with a discharge nozzle in communication with the end of the container opposite the pump and extending therefrom at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the container and pump, whereby the'range of action of this type of extinguishers is very largely increased.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a longitudinal sectional view of a hand operated portable fire extinguisher.
In the drawing, 1 is a cylindrical shell or container provided with opposite heads 2, 3, which are centrally perforated to receive the flanged collars 4, 5.
. Mounted in the flanged collar 4 of the head 2 is a pump barrel 10, which projects into the container 1 in alinement with its central longitudinal axis. The inner end of the pump barrel carries a. hollow block or valve casing 15, in which is seated a ball valve 16 held to its seat by a spring 17 engaged by the centrally perforated nut 18.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1916. Serial No. 99,551.
-The ball valve .16 normally closes the air inlet 20, leading from the pump chamber.
1s a pump piston operating in the barrel 10 and suitably mounted upon the inner threaded end of the piston rod 26. The nut 27 which assists in securing the piston 25 n place upon the piston rod is formed in its face with a gasket 28 adapted to cover the outlet port 20 when the piston is fastened in its innermost position.
The piston rod 26 passes out through the flanged head or cap 30, secured to the outer end of the pump barrel 10. This cap 30 has an internally threaded recess 31' in which the threaded hub 32 of the operating handle is adapted to be screwed. handle 33 is suitably secured upon the reduced outer end 26 of piston rod 26. llhcn the hub portion of handle 33 is screwed into the threaded collar of cap 30 the gasket 23 will be firmly pressed over outlet port 20 to prevent leakage of the extinguishing liquid from the container out through the pump.
The collar 5 in head 3 is internally threaded to receive the threaded nipple 35 of the discharge nozzle 36, the nozzle body being formed with a passageway 35 leading from the container 1 and a' central communicating passageway 36", extending in an angle thereto and leading to the outlet A packing 37 is interposed between the nozzle 36 and collar 5. The nozzle 36 pro jects at an angle from the axis of nipple 35 so that when the nozzle is screwed into place it will project at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the container and pump. A needle valve 40, threaded at ll in the body of nozzle 36 and provided with an operating handle 42 and packing gland 43, is arranged to close the outlet 36 of the nozzle. The needle valve extends through central passageway 36*.
From the above description it will be understood that in operating the improved extinguisher it is held in convenient position with one hand, by the operator, while the pump is actuated by the other hand. The arrangement of the discharge nozzle at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the container and pump is of great importance. not only because of the convenience in operating the extinguisher but because of the increase in range given the extinguisher of T he this type, in which it is necessary to hold the extinguisher with the opening from the container to the nozzle at the lowest point.
With this angularly arranged-nozzle the eating with the normal low point of the container and extending at an angle to the major axis thereof.
2. A fire extinguisher comprising a liquid container having a hand operated reciprocating fluid expelling pump projecting into the container from one end in line with its longitudinal axis and a nozzle mounted upon the opposite end of the container in communication with the normal low point of the container and extending at an angle to the longitudinal axis of said pump.
