DRILL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. RAIN-- BOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dundee, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a drill, and has for its principal object to provide an improved machine for drilling holes in the vertical Webs of railroad rails.
The improvement consists in certain arrangements whereby the machine is provided with a clamp for engaging the rail operated upon which can be adjusted to fit rails of different widths and which is so constructed that it may be instantaneously released from the rail. This improvement makes it possible to remove the machine from the rail very quickly when occasion requires, for example, on the approach of a train.
The invention consists further in certain other novel and improved arrangements, constructions and devices relating to drilling machines to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated, in a preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawings wherein v v Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine shown as clamped to a railroad rail; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4, a sectional view on line H of Fig. 2, this figure being on a smaller scale than the figures preceding.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The operative parts of the machine are supported upon a framework consisting of a pair of cross bars 10 pivoted to lugs 11 on an angle bar 12 preferably provided with an extension piece 13 for the foot of the operator, and of uprights 14 secured to the cross bars 10 and a post 15 adjustably connected to the uprights by bolts 16. The post terminates preferably in a handle 17 provided with bearings for a shaft 18 having a crank 19 by means of which the drill of the machine is driven.
The bars 10 are provided with jaws 20 adapted to bear against the rail to be operated upon, for example, against the ball of a T-rail designated 21. Slidably mounted Specification of Letters Patent.

on extensions 22 of the bars 10, are jaw members 23 connected by a cross piece 24 through which projects a rod 25 threaded at its outer end and provided with a Wing nut 26 and pivoted at its inner end to a crank 27 formed on a sleeve 28 revolubly mounted on a cross pin 29 secured to the bars 10. A spring 30 is interposed between the cross piece 24 and an abutment 31 on rod 25. The sleeve 28 is provided with a handle 32. The crank 27, sleeve 28, and handle 32 constitute a rocking member by manipulation of which the machine is clamped to or released from the rail. The rod 25 is provided on the under side with a projection 25 which is arranged so that at the opening movement of the jaws it comes against the ball of the rail and forces the whole machine backward far enough for the drill to clear the web of the rail.
33 designates a bit or drill which is secured in any suitable manner, for example, by means of set screw 34, in a drill carrying element 35 provided with a shaft 36 revolubly arranged in a two- part gear box 37, 38 secured to the uprights 14 by screws 39. The shaft 18 carries a sprocket wheel 40 connected by a link belt 41 with a sprocket wheel 42 operatively connected to the shaft 36.
43 designates a rod provided with a handle '44 mounted in a bearing 45 on post 15 and is suitably connected with the driving and clutch mechanism inclosed in the casing 37, 38 so as to control the operation of this mechanism. The particular form of mechanism is not shown or described in this application, as it forms no part of the invention disclosed herein. Any suitable mechanism common to this particular type of machine may be used.
Operation: By adjusting nut 26 which holds the cross piece 24 on the rod 25 against the compression of spring 30, the span as between the movable jaws 23 and the fixed jaw 20 may be varied for rails of different width. The pivotal relation of the whole machine on th angle bar 12 gives the necessary adjustment for different heights of rail while positioning the foot piece 13 flatly and firmly on the tie at all times. By throwing lever 32 forward the jaws 23 are made to take a firm hold on the ball of the rail. The tension of belt 41 is adjusted by a vertical adjustment of post 15 on the uprights 14.
When the crank 19 is turned over from the operator, who places his foot upon extension 13, the drill carrying member 36 is revolved and moved forward. in the usual manner to perform the drilling operation. After the hole is drilled or if it becomes necessary to remove the machine from the track, the operator, releases the machine from the rails by throwing the handle 3:2 back (to the left in F ig. 1). This separates the jaws 20, and at the same time brings the shoulder 25 against the ball of the rail, moving the entire machine back from the rail. This backward movement of the entire machine withdraws the drill from the hole in' the rail in case it has not been backed out in the usual manner so that as a matter of fact if it becomes necessary to hastily remove the machine from the track the operator need not reverse the drill but can simply throw open the jaws by pulling back handle 82.
While I have described my invention in a certain preferred embodiment, modifications might be made without departing from the principles of the invention. Therefore I do not wish to be understood as limiting the invention to the particular devices, constructions and arrangements shown and described except so far as said devices, constructions and arrangements are specifically made limitations in certain of the claims herein.
I claim:
1. In a machine of the character described, a clamp for engaging the machine to a rail comprising a pair of relatively movable jaws, and mechanism for opening and closing said jaws comprising a shouldered jaw which, at the opening movement of the jaws, operates to push the machine back from the rail.
2; In a machine of the character described, the combination with a base member adapted to rest upon the ground, of a framework having a loose rocking connection with the base member on which the drill spindle is supported, and a clamp on said framework adapted to engage the rail operated upon.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a base member adapted to rest upon the ground, of a framework having a loose rocking connection with the base member on which the drill spindle is supported, a clamp on said framework adapted. to engage the rail operated upon, said clamp comprising a pair of relatively movable jaws,'and means for adjustably positioning the same so as to vary the span thereof for rails of differentwidths.
a. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame having a rail engaging jaw thereon, of a jaw movably sustained on said frame, and mechanism for movingsaid movable jaw to and from the other jaw comprising an element which, with the opening of the movable aw, forces said framework backwardly from the rail, said mechanism being adjustably connected with the movable jaw so as to vary the span of said jaws by movement of a single element.
In a machine of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame having a rail engaging jaw thereon, of a j aw movably sustained on said frame, a rocking member on the frame, a rod connected with the rocking member, and means for adjustably connecting the rod with said movable jaw.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame having a rail engaging jaw thereon, of a jaw movably sustained on said frame, a rocking member on the frame, a rod connected with the rocking member, means for adjustably connecting the rod with said movable jaw, a spring abutment on said rod, and spring interposed between said abutment and said movable jaw.
7. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame having a rail'engaging jaw thereon, of ajaw movably sustained on said frame, a rocking member on the frame and a rod connecting said rocking member and movable jaw, said latter jaw being provided with a projection adapted to bear against the rail and push the machine therefrom when the jaws are opened.
8. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a pair of bars having integrally formed jaws and extension guide members, of a pair of jaws slidably mounted on said guide members, a cross piece connecting said movable jaws, a rocking member mounted on said bars provided with a handle, a rod connected to said rocking member and extending through said cross piece and threaded at its extremity, an adjusting nut on the threaded end of the rod, a spring abutment on the rod, and a spring interposed between said abutment and said cross piece.
9. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a pair of bars having integrally formed jaws and extension guide members, of a pair of jaws slidably mounted on said guide members, a cross piece connecting said movable jaws, a rocking member mounted on said bars provided with a handle, a rod connected to said rocking member and extending through said cross piece and threaded at its extremity, an adjusting nut on the threaded end of the rod, a spring abutment .on the rod, and a spring interposed between said abutment and said cross piece, said rod being formed with a shoulder adapted to bear against the rail when the aws are opened so as to push the machine away from the rail.
10. In a machine of the character described the combination with a base member adapted to rest upon the ground, of a pair of bars pivoted to the base member and having integrally formed jaws and extension guide members, a pair of jaws slidably mounted on said guide members, a cross piece connecting said movable jaws, a rocking member mounted on said bars provided with a handle, a rod connected to said rock- 10 ing member and extending through said FREDERICK L.
