l*The objects of -my present invention `arieaccomplished by applying to the continuous strlp ofpaper at a convenient period in its progress through the machine a cutting die `for forming an opening in the body portion of the blank, a gumming mechanismfor applying gum around the opening, with means for severlng a patch from a continuous strip of paper, and applying the patch` to the gummed surface around ,the opening by means of apairjof rolls between which the contlnuous strip of paper containing the envelop blanks and the severed patches are passed simultaneously, one of said rolls be-y ing provided with al gripping `mechanism which seizes the severed patch and holds it in proper registration to be appliedtothe en\ velop blank until the blank and patch are both carried into the bight of the rolls. Thel pressure-of the rolls causes the lfirm-adhesion of the patch to the gummed blank. In the accompanying drawings I have showm'a mechanism for accomplishing these lobjects as applied to the machine described in the aforesaid patent to J ames West. Many details in the mechanism hereinafter described as embodying my invention can be materially changed or modified without de'- parting from the spirit of myv invention, which consists in its essential feature in rolling the envelop blank and transparent patch simultaneously between a pair of rolls by which both the blank and the patch are made to travel at a uniform speed during the period that the patch is being applied to the blank bythe pressure ofthe rolls.

I have omitted from the drawings, for the sake of clearness, all that part of the mechanism of the West machine which is not directly concerned in the application of my invention thereto, and reference may be had to the aforesaid\ patent to James- West No. 893,042, for a description of any parts not shown in the present drawings.
Referring to Fig. 1, 1 denotes aportion of the framework upon which the operative parts are mounted, and 2 represents a continuous strip of paper from which the envelop blanks are formed, taken from a coil, not shown. Porti- ons 3, 4, 5 and 6 are removed from the edges of the continuous'strip 2 to form a. blank of the form shown in Fig. 9, by means of a cutting mechanism, comprising a roll 7, against the sharp corner of which a pressure roll 8 impinges, causing the strip to be severed as-it 4passes between the vroll 8 and the cornersrof the roll 7. to its surface inproper position, two peripheral strips 14 adapted to apply gum to the edges 15, 15 of the end iaps. The roll 13 is also provided with a gumming pad 16 properly shaped to apply gum'to the surface 17 around the opening 11, and also with another gumming pad 18 adapted to apply gum to the surface 19 upon the back flap of the envelop blank. These several gumming strips or pads project slightly from the surface of the roll 13 and take gum from a gumming roll 2O revolving in a gum box 21. As the envelop blanks in the continuous strip 2 successively pass the gumming rolls they will have gum applied to the surfaces 15, 17 and 19, Fig. 9. From the gumming mechanism the continuous strip passes around an idler roll 22 carried upon a swinging frame 23 to which a spring 24 is applied to provide a yielding pressure of the roll 22 against. the continuous Strip 2. From the idler roll 22 the continuous strip 2 passes between a roll 25 and a segmental roll 26. Coperating with the segmental roll 26 is a segmental roll 27, all three of said rolls being geared together, so that the peripheries of the segmental rolls will contact during each revolution. The transparent paper for the patches is contained in a continuous strip 28 held in a coil 29. The transparent strip 28 is carried beneath a roll 30 journaled in vertical slots 31 and having its weight supported upon the transparent strip. From the roll 30 the transparent strip is conducted over a roll 32 and between two friction plates 33 and 34, from which its free end 35 hangs loosely in the open space between the segmental rolls 26 and 27, the end 35 extending slightly below a line joining the centers of the two segmental rolls. The segmental. roll 26 carries at each end a gripping mechanism, that at one end being shown in detail in Fig. 5.
The gripping mechanism comprises a bar 36, capable of a radially sliding movement in a slot 37 in the head 38 of the segmental roll 26. Attached to the bar 36 is a blade 39 having la slight outward curve 40 near its tip, as shown in Fig. 5, and being bent at its end at right angles at 41, to project over the head 38. The blade 39 is capable of a sliding movement between` the head 38 and a plate 42 attached to the head 38 by screws 43", Fig. 6. The bar 36 is pressed radially inward by a spring 44 and at the proper period is crowded outwardly by means of a fixed 4cam 45 attached to the framework of the the tip 41 over the edge of the transparent curved form to draw the blade 48 into they strip. This conjoint movement of the tips 41 at the opposite ends of the segmental roll 26 cause them to grip the opposite edges of the transparent strip against the segmental roll 26. When this is accomplished, the continued movement of the segmental roll 26 will draw down the transparent strip 28 between the friction plates 33, 34, winding it up upon the periphery of the segmental roll 26. The segmental roll 26 carries in a recess 47, Fig. 4, a serrated cutting blade 48, Fig. 2, capable of a radially sliding movement in the recess 47, allowing it to be pushed outward into a recess 49 in the segmental roll 27. Each end of the blade 48, Fig. 2, is carried in a sliding yoke 50. The yoke 50 is capable of a sliding movement over a fixed sleeve 51, forming the journal bearing for the shaft of the segmentalI roll 26. The yokes 50 are provided with a tailpiece 52 which contacts with a fixed cam 53 by which the yokes 50 and the connected sliding blade 48 are periodically pushed radially outward into the recess 49 of the segmental roll 27, causing the serrated edge of the blade 48 to sever the continuous strip of transparent paper at a point below the line connecting the centers of the segmental rolls 26 and 27,1eaving its end 35 hanging as before in position to be again gripped and drawn forward by the rotation of the segmented roll 26.
After the yokes 50 and blade 48 have been pushed radially forward to sever the transparent strip they are retracted by a pair of blade springs 54, shown in plan view in Fig. 2, one being shown in Fig. 4. rlhese blade springs are attached at one end to the segmental roll 26 and their opposite ends enter mortises in the blade 48. rlhese springs are straightened as the blade 48k is pushed outward, and when released from the cam 53 the springs `54,resume their recess 47 of the segmental roll 26, the curvature of the springs being suliicicnt to accomplish this result. From the patch applying mechanism the continuous strip 2 passes to a mechanism for folding the end flaps and severing the strip into individual blanks, comprising the rolls 55 md 5(1p`ro-A vided with tucking and folding blades, and avcutting roll 57 having a cutting'blade 58 cooperating with a recess in the roll 56. Each Aindividual blank is then transferred to mechanisms for completing the. folding operations to form an envelop, such as is represented at Ain Fig. v10.
The mechanisms for severing the continuous strip 2 and forfolding the blanks forms no 'part of my present invention, the same having been fully described in the aforesaid patent to James West.
My present invention relates solely `to thatl portion of the above described mechanism r which is concernedin cutting the window they may be withdrawn by any suitable suction device' applied to the end 9a of the shaft, Fig. 7.
I claim,
1. ln a machine ofv the class described, means for imparting a longitudinal movement to a continuous strip of paper having regularly spaced openings therethrough provided with margins of adhesive material, a pair ofrolls for applying pressure to the opposite sides of said strip, andA means carried by one of the rolls of said pair for engaging and moving a transparent patch between said pair of rolls simultaneously with the passage of an opening between4 said pair of rolls.
2. A mechanism for applying a transparent patch to cover an opening in an envelop blank forming part of a continuous strip, comprising a pair of rolls between which the continuous strip is passed, whereby pressure is applied to said strip, gripping mechanism carried by one of said rolls, means for presenting the end of a continuous strip of transparent paper to said gripping mecha-A gripping mechanism after the severed patch has been carried into the bight of said rolls.
3. A mechanism for applying a transparent patch to an envelop blank, comprising means for forming openings in successively fed blanks, means for applying gum around said openings during the feeding of said blanks, a pair of rolls between which said blanks are successively passed, and means carried by one of said rolls for engaging and moving a transparent patch between said pair of rolls simultaneously with the passage of ablank having an opening between said pair of rolls.
