EBBERI M. ALBRIGHT, OF ELKIN S, WEST VIRGINIA.
BRAKE A'IL'I'ACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ch-E'Jell, lhllld.
Application filed November 8, 1915. Serial No. 60,399.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Banner M. ALBRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at lillkins, in the county of Randolph, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake Attach ments for Automobiles; and I do hereby do clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The "present invention is directed to improvements in brake att..ch1nents for Ford autoinoloiles and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that it can be easily and quickly attached to a. car of this make. and when in place thereon will operate in an ellicient manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hand brake attachment which can be attached to the car Without rcmovingthe usual brake drums carried thereby.
A still further object of the invention is to 'provide a novel means for supporting the rock shaft of the attachment whereby the strain imparted thereto during the operationoi the brake will he equalized between the diil'ercntial housing and the rock shaft.
Still another object is to provide a bear for the rock shaft which can be easily and quickly attached to the difierential housing: when the same is being assembled.
llith these and other objects-in View. this invention csides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to he hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing'izi Which: I
Figure. 1 is a. rear elevation of the automobile showing the equipped With the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 F 1. is a similar View on lhlh w I a 0 I line 3--3 of r 1g". 1. IF 1g. 1s a similar view.
on line l--4- of Fig. 1. Fig. 5'isascctional view through one of the drums. Fig. 6 1S sectional view through the usual brake drum Referring; to the drawing 1 indicates the rear tubular axle housing and 2 the d1frer- "ential housing. The hubs of the rear Wheels have fixed thereto 1n the usual manner the brake drums 3. To the drums 3 are fixed the metal hands a of my attachment, and I ends of which have as;
nected thereto links 12, said links being ad justably connected to the webs 13 of the angle plates 14, which are fixed to one of the ends of the brake hand 15, said brake hand being linedwith suitable fabric. The
arms 11 are pivotally connected to the other ends of the brake band. yvherelov when the shaft 8 is rocked the hand will be caused to expand or contract, and since the same are engaged around the ,handsd carried by the drum 3 it is ohvious that the braking action of the vehicle can-he readily controlled.
The rock shaft has fixed thereto an arm 16, which is pivotally connected to the rear end of the rod- 17., which is-controlled lay the usual foot lever (not shown). ,The red It"? is vieldably' connected to the'bottom oi the vehicle by acoil spring 1.8, which serves to normally hold the shaft 8 in a position. to hold the bands 15 in an expanded position. To prevent the brake hands 15 from moving laterally guides 19 are provided. said guides being boltedto the rear radius rod 2th bearing block 21 is triangular in shape, and has formed on its rear end a transverse groove 22 for receiving the roclc shaft 8. Circular plates 23 are provided and are connected to'the rims 23' of the differential housing by one of the bolts 24, said plates having formed integral therewith diveraing arms 25 which are secured to the sides of the block 21. Thus it will be seen that the strain imparted to the rock shaft Will he The equalized between the brackets 6 andsaid bearing".
From the iorec'oina' description it Will he seen that a brake attachment hashes-n prorun bands engagecl wiv'zh the drums, at rock shaft ried thereby for attachment to the sides of having its ends connected with the brake the block.
