Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Cet. 241i, 1216.
Application filed April 8, 1916. Serial No. 89,8211.
To all 107mm it may concern Be it known that 1, Mams RoosMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Picture-Frame, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a picture frame formed completely of glass including an integral glass facing or panel for the picture.
In connection with my improved all-glass frame, 1 employ a novel picture backing, the said backing and frame having co-acting means to retain the backing in position o n the frame.
The invention will be particularly eX- plained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a face view of a picture frame formed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse vertical section of the frame, the backing being omitted; Fig. i is a detail horizontal section on the line 4 4, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary rear view of the backing plate. I
ln carrying out my invention, a frame 10 is formed of glass and has a border 11 integral therewith, the border being depressed so the central panel or facing, for the picture, is raised. Around the central panel a suitable design is cut in the glass, the same being indicated by the num-eral 12. Similarly, on the border 11, any suitable design 13 may be cut. A depression 111- is formed in the frame at the center to receive a picture as at 15, and around the edge of the depression the rear surface of the central panel is roughened or frosted as indicated at 16, to serve the purpose of holding the picture against displacement and to contribute an aesthetic element in reducing the plain, transparent area. Against the back of the picture 15, there is placed, in practice, a corrugated sheet 17, or a sheet of card board or paper as is usual in framing pictures. To hold the picture in position a backing plate 18 is provided of a size to be snugly received in the depression 14, and said plate is formed with a marginal flange 19 extending rearwardly at right angles. A supporting leg 2O is pivoted, in any suitable manner, to the backing plate 18 to swing to or from the frame 10.
In order to secure the backing plate 18 in position, flat locking bars 21 are provided, pivoted at one end as at 22, there being preferably four of these in practice, adjacent to the corners of the plate 18. The locking plates 21 have a suli'icient length to be swung through transverse slots 23 in the flange 19 to project beyond said iiange for engagement with the side walls of the depression 14 in the frame 10. To be engaged by and to co-act with th-e locking bars 21, 1 produce in opposite side walls of the depression 111, grooves 24.-, the rear walls of which adjacent to the respective locking bars, are inclined as .at 25, said inclinations leading to the contracted ends 26 of the grooves.
By the described arrangement, the engagement of the ends of the locking bars 21 with the beveled surfaces 25, will cause the backing plate 18 to be drawn forwardly into firm engagement with the intermediate sheet 17, thereby pressing the picture 16 closely against the rear face of the central panel of the glass frame. To limit the swinging movement of the locking bars 21 from the locking position, stop members 27 are struck up from the plate 18. There is also produced on the said plate protuberances 29, and to receive said protuberances, holes 28 are formed in the locking bars 21, said protuberances being in position to be engaged by the locking bars when the latter are in the locked position.
Hai-'ing thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: y
A picture frame formed at the rear thereof to receive a picture, and presenting grooved side walls, in combination with a backing plate having a rearwardly extending edge Harige formed With transverse slots, and locking bars pvoted on said backing plate and having a length to extend through Said slots, the Walls of the said grooves presenting nelnes adapted to be engaged'by the said locking bars.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
MADIS ROOSMAN.
