V-TYPE MULTICYLINDER ENGINE.
" Specification of Letters Patent. t t t, 17, 191
' Application filed November 11, 1915. Serial No. 60,883.
had therein to the accompanying drawings,
The invention relates to multi-Cylinder engines of the V-type, and it is the primary object of the invention to simplify the construction of inlet manifold and the attachment of the carbureter to the same. To this end the invention comprises the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a cross seci tion through a motor embodying my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
A and B are the twin blocks of engine cylinders forming a V-t-ype motor.
C is a crankcase on which said blocks are mounted and provided. with bearings D for the crankshaft.
It is usual to arrange the carbureter between the blocks and connect the same with twin inlet manifolds therefor. This renders .the carbureter less accessible than where arranged at the side of the engine and also complicates the operations of assembly. With my improved construction the carbureter is arranged at one side of the engine and is connected with the cylinders in the twin blocks by an inlet passage through the crank case.
' center of the blocks, and at their upper ends the passages H and H connect with oppositely-extending passages I and I whlch connect to the several cylinders in each block by individual passages J controlled by the,
valves K. The water-jacket L of each block is also preferably connected with passages L formed in the crank case partition or web E for connection with the pump and circulatingsystem.
Wlth the construction as described the carbureter M may be mounted directly on the side of the crank case where it is easily accessible, and as the passages F H H II and J are formed by coring the crank case and cylinder blocks a simple and inexpensive construction is obtained.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a V-type motor, a crank case formed with a web or partition for supporting the crank shaft bearing, said web or partition having an inlet conduit therein, and twin cylinder blocks secured to said crank case havin branch admission conduits registermg with said admission conduit in the crank case.
2. In a V-type motor, a crank case havlng a-transversely' extendingpartition with an admission conduit extending from one side of said crank case to the center thereof teminating in an upwardly-extending bifurcation, and twin cylinder blocks having branch admission conduits registering with the furcations of the conduit in said crank case.
3. In a V-type motor, the combination with a crank case having a central partition provided with an admission conduit extending from one side of the case to the center with an upward bifurcation, twin cylinder blocks mounted on said crank case and each having a plurality'ir'xf cylinders arranged upon opposite sides of said central partition,
each of said blocks having an upwardlyextending admission conduit registering with a fur-cation of the conduit in said case and also having oppositely-extending conduits leading to the several cylinders.
4. In a V-type motor, a crank case and separate twin cylinder blocks, each of said blocks having an inlet conduit formed therein extending longitudinally thereof, with a downwardly-extending portion at the center, and said crank case having an admission conduit extending from one side of the case inward and branched for registration with the conduits in said blocks. g
5. In a motor, a crank case formed with a web or partition having an inlet conduit and a passage for the'cooling medium therein and a cylinder block secured to said crank case having an admission conduit connecting with said inlet conduit and a surrounding jacket connecting with said passage for the cooling medium.-
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
' CARL C. HINKLEY.
