FLUSH-VALVE.
Application filed February 28, 1913.
To all whom lit may concern Be it known that I, JAMES J. ,FINNEIQ a. citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and. State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flush-Valves, of which the following is a* specification.
My invention relates to. flushvalves and has for its object the provision orf means by which. an increase of temperature in the contents ofa urinal, or other similar receptacle, will automatically operate the yvalve to cause fresh water to flow through the urinal. f j
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a urinal and its connections; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the valve and controlling apparatus; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the bearing by which the controlling apparatus is supported from the valve body and in a trap located in the discharge piper; and Fig. 4 is a detail of a clamping adjustment.
In the said-drawings 10 is a urinal to which are connected an inlet pipe 11 and a discharge pipe 12. In the pipe 12 is a chamber 13 having placed therein an exteriorly open chamber 11 of thin metal having good heat conducting properties.
In the pipe 11 is a valve body 15 containing an ordinary valve 16. The upper end of the valve stem 17 is held in a fixed position by being secured to the head 18 of the body 15. Between the upper and lower parts of the valve stem 17, and forming a. part thereof, is al compound diaphragm 19 made up of a series of corrugated dia-` phragms secured together in pairs to form corrugated disks, `and the disks secured together at their centers, the outside disks being secured to the upper and lower parts of The interiors of the disks are in communication with each other by central openings-as shown in Fig. 2. The interiorv of the compound diaphragm is also in communication with the space over the valve'16 by means of a small hole 20, and through a larger hole 21 with a channel 22 in the head 18. In the side of the body 15 is a channel 23 communicating with the channel 22 at one end and with the discharge space 25 Linder the valve 16 at the other end. In the channel 23 is a valve 241 with its seat for opening and closing communication between channel 22 and space 25. The stem 26 of Specification of Letters Patent.

Supported, on the inlet and outlet branches of the body 15, by means of bearings 28, is a frame 29 which -extends down into the chamber 11 as shown in Fig. 2. Within that part of the frame 29 which is suspended in chamber ,1,1 is another compound diaphragm 30 which differs from ldiaphragm 19 in that it has no exterior openings and is filled with a volatile fluid so as to be sensitive to small temperature changes. 1
Adfustably secured on a pivot 31 on the frame 29 is an arm 32, and pivoted at 33 on the inner end of the arm 32 is another arm34, the farther end of which is located directly beneath and close to an exterior extension of the stem 26. A tension spring 35 connects pin 36 on arm 34 with pin 37 on arm 32. The drawing shows pins 37, 33 and 36 in a straight line, in which position the spring is ineffective to turn the arm '34 on its pivot 33. The slightest,movement, however, ofthe arm 31 on its pivot from this neutral position will cause the spring to act to force the arm 34 still farther from this neutral position. vWhile the arm 34: passes through this neutral position each time the flush valve operates, it does not remain in this position but normally rests against either pin 38 or pin 39 on the stem 10 secured to the top of the diaphragm 30. In inoperative position the arm 34 rests against pin 39, and valve 211 is on its seat closing communication between channel 22 and the discharge 25. Assuming ordinary city water supply entering in the direction of the arrow at the right and being above the valve 16, the water will enter the opening 20 and fill the interior of the diaphragm '19, and also the space between diaphragm 19 and the valve 24. The normal tension of the diaphragm 19 is such that when the pressure inside and outside is equal, it will hold the valve 16 closed, or it will close said valvefwhen it is open. g
Vhen water of ordinary city temperature flows through the'chamber 13 the same temperature will be communicated by radia; tion to the diaphragm 30, and this dia'- phragm will retain the arm 34 at its lower position. If We now assume that the diaphragm 30 is sensitive and that water of a higher temperature flows from the urinal to tlie jchamber 13, highervtemperature will cause the diaphragm to expand andl push the arm 34 upward on V its pivot 33. |lhe instant the arm 31 passes its neutral point the spring 35 will act to throw it upward n with a sharp blow against the stem 26. This water vthrough the pipe 11, the urinal 10, ydischarge 12 and chamber -13.
The lower temperatures of the water in the trap will be communicated to the diaphragm 30, and cause that diaphragm to contract and move the arm 3st from its upperto its lower position. Wvhen the'support is removed from under the stem 26, the pressure of water, acting on diaphragm 27, and the top of the valve 24, will close valve 24.' `The iiow of water-through opening20 will then eX- pand diaphragm 19 and close valve 16 to shut off the flow of water to the urinal. Then the warm water again flows to the chamber 13 the cycle of operations will be repeated. n
The arm 32 is made adjustable on its pivot 31 so thatthe straight line adjoining pins 37, 33 and 36 will bring the end of 34 with any desired degree of closeness to the pin 38 or pin 39or a given temperature of the diaphragm 30.` By aV proper' adjustment of the arm-32, the arm 34 can be made to strike thestem 26 at any Vdesired temperature of the diaphragm 30. This adjustment is by means of a nut 40 on the pin 31. W'hen 'this nut is tightened the arm 32 is clamped between the head of the pin 31 and the boss 41 on the part 29. f
What I claim is 1. A body sensitive to temperature changes, a flush valve, means by which upon the passage ofwarm water adjacent to said body it will expand andcause the valve to open, and means by which cool water flowing through said valve will contract said body and cause the valve to close.
2.- The combination with a urinal, and a iiushV valve therefor, of a device for controlling the open and closed condition of the valve, and means for controlling said device bythe temperature 'of the water flowing through said urinal.
3. The combination with a urinal, a flush valve therefor, a water 'supply connected to the valve, and means for operating the valve bythe pressure `of the water` supply,`.of a i device for controlling the distribution of water pressure so as to open and close the valve, and means for controlling the device by the temperature of the water flowing 'pressure of'the water flowing to the Hush valve, means for regulating the relative degrees of internal and external pressure to make it effective to open the valve, and a temperature controlled device for controlling the pressure controlling means.
5. The combination with a flush valve, a hollow device for operating the valve, and means for operating said device by the pressure of water flowing to the valve, of a supplementary valve for controlling the water pressure within said hollow device so as to make the water pressure effective to operate said device, and a temperature actuated device Jfor moving said supplementary valve.
6. rl`he combination with a urinal, a flush pipe, and ay discharge pipe, of a flush valve located in the lush pipe, and automatically operating means for controlling the ope-ration of the flush valve by variations in the temperature of the water iowing through the discharge pipe.
7. The combination with a urinal, a flush pipe, and a discharge pipe, of a lush valve in the flush pipe, means for operating the valve by pressure of waterin the flush pipe. and means for controlling such operation by the temperature of the water in the discharge pipe.
8. The combination with a urinal, and a water supply pipe subjected to ordinary city water pressure, of a valve controlling the How of water direct from the supply pipe to the urinal, and means for controlling the operation of the valve by the temperature of the water flowing through the urinal.
9. The combination with a urinal, and water supply and discharge pipes connected thereto, of a valve located in the supply pipe and normally held in a closed position by the pressure of the water therein, a supplementary valve for relieving the holdingV .pressure so that the principal valve may open,a thermostatic device in the discharge f of February, 1913.
