EDWARD R. BRAINERD, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SOFA-SEAT BED AND SANITARY DAVENPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17,1916.
Application filed. October 11, 1915. Serial No. 55,294.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. BRAINERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Sofa-Seat Bed and Sanitary Davenport, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an article of furniture, which can be adapted for use as a seat or as a bed, and the main object of the invention is to provide a device for. this purpose which can be changed from a seat to a bed or vice versa with the greatest facility and expedition.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination seat bed which will be sanitary and durable and at the same time simple and cheap in construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction in which themattress normally hangs underneath the seat, and is only brought to position on top of the device, when it is desired for use.
A further object of the invention is to avoid the use of the same side of the bed means for a seat and for a bed, my invention providing a construction whereby one side of the bed means is used for a seat, and the other side is used for a bed; the invention also providing for use of the same spring means for both bed and seat purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bed construction having two bed springs with interposed coil springs, so as to make an especially springy and comfortable triple spring bed. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a davenport bed construction having two upholstered appurtenances, a cushion to sit on, and a mattress to sleep on, so that they may be taken out and aired, and the springs and iron work cleansed, as occasion requires.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, and referring thereto: Figure l is a perspective view of a davenport embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the davenport. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the davenport in position for use as a bed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a sofa seat bed embodying the invention. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the device shown in Fig. 4.
The device comprises a frame or support which may comprise a back member 1 and end members 2. Two bed members 4 and 5 are mounted on this support by pivot-s or hmges 3, arranged at an edge of each of said members, said pivots or hinges being, for example, mounted on the end members 2. Members 4 and 5 are provided with bed spring frames 6 and 7, in which are mounted bed springs 6 and 7. Said members 4 and 5 are also provided withbed spring frames 8 and 9, in which are mounted bed springs 8 and 9. Coil springs 12 are interposed between the bed springs 6" and 8 on bed member 4, and between the bed springs 7 and 9 on bed member 5. The bed springs 6 and 7 may be formed as a continuous spring, adapted to fold when the members 4 and 5 are in the position shown in Fig. 2, and a mattress 10 is mounted on one side of the members 4 and 5, and is also adapted to fold. The member 4 is a seat member as well as bed member, and is provided with cushion means 11, on the side opposite mattress 10.
To facilitate cleaning the parts and render the device sanitary, both the cushion means 11 and the mattress means 10 are preferably made removable, being strapped or fastened in position in any suitable manner, for example by straps 13, 14, 15. The bed members 4 and 5 are so constructed that when the member 4 is turned over, it will engage the member 5 to raise the same to horizontal position, the hinges being for example formed as jack-knife hinges, for this purpose.
' The member 4 is adapted to normally rest with its rear edge on a ledge 17 on the back member 1, so as to extend horizontally rearward from the pivots or hinge supports 3, as shown in Fig. 2, forming the seat for the davenport, and the member 5 normally hangs vertically downward from the front edge of member 4, to form the front or apron for the-seat. In order to cover the space or angle between the members 4 and 5, a filler member 19 of padding or upholstery, may be provided, flexibly mounted on member 11, and normally occupying this space, but adapted to drop down out of the way when the bed is opened. The pad 19 has an extension 16 which hangs down in front of member 5 to form an apron. To open the bed, the member 4 is swung for ward on the hinges 3 to position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the shoulders 3 of the jack knife pivot or hinges 3 then engaging so that in the further swinging movement of the member 4, to position shown in full lines in Fig. 8, the member 5 is swung with it and is raised to horizontal position, the mattress 10 being then in position on top of the bed formed by the members 4: and 5. Suitable means are provided for holding the bed from turning too far, for example the member 5 may engage the ledge 17 for that purpose, and a lock 29, which may be a spring catch or other suitable means, may be provided for holding the bed from falling back until said lock is released.
As shown in Figs. at and 5, the invention may be applied to a plain sofa seat and bed, the bed members 2 1 and 25 being in that case pivoted or hinged together and to a support 21 by hinges 23, in the same manner as above described, but the extra frames and springs being omitted, each bed member be ing provided with a single bed spring 26, the mattress 27 being mounted on the under side of both members 24: and 25 and a cushion 28 being mounted on the upper side of member 1. In this form of the invention, which is especially adapted to a single bed, the member 2- may be provided with end members 30 which serve as legs when said member 2a is turned to open position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. Cushion or pad member 28 has an extension or curtain 28 which normally hangs down in front of member 25 to form an apron.
The invention is applicable as a separate or movable article of furniture, or it may if desired be built into a wall, for example, it may be constructed in either the single or double-form, to go between two end walls and a back wall, which form the ends and back for the bed and davenport.
The invention as above described may be used as a movable article of furniture, or if desired, it may be built into a wall or partition as afixture.
Vvhat I claim is:
1. In a seat-bed, a supporting frame, a seat member pivoted on said frame, and a front member hinged to s aid seat member to swing into vertical position or into horizontal position, said members being provided with means engaging with one another in the swinging movement of the seat member,
to couple the members together and to swing the front member upward and backward to horizontal position as the seat member swings forward to horizontal position.
2. In a seat bed, a support, a bed-member pivoted on said support and normally extending downward from the pivoted support, and a second bed-member pivoted on said support and normally extending horizontally rearward therefrom and adapted to swing forward to horizontal position in front of its pivoted support, and provided with means engaging the first named bed member, when the second bed member is so swung forward, to turn said first named bed member up to horizontal position at the rear of its pivoted support.
- 3. In a seat bed, a support, two bed members pivoted coaxially on said support, said members normally extending respectively downward and rearward from the pivoted axis, and said members being provided with interengaging means adapted, when the normally horizontal member is raised to vertical position, to engage the other member, so that in the further movement of said normally horizontal member, the two members will move together until both are brought to horizontal position.
4:. In a seat bed, a support, a reversible seat and bed member mounted at one edge thereof to swing on said support so as to turn bottom side upward, a second bed member hinged at one edge to said first named bed member and normally hanging downward therefrom and provided with means engaged by the first named bed member to turn the second bed member up to horizontal position when the first bed member is turned completely over, said first bed member having two bedspring frames and springs between said frames, and said second bed memher having a bed spring frame, and a mattress mounted on one side of both of said bed members, and a cushion mounted on one side of one of said bed members.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at Los Angeles, California, this 6th day of October 1915.
EDWARD n. Bniimnnn.
