Reference now being had to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views, the letter P indicates a platform having mounted upon one end thereof washing machinetub W and slidably mounted upon the pposite end of the platform a wringer 1t.
Journaled within hearings 1 supported upon platform P is a driving shaft 2 carrying a belt pulley 3 connected to a suitable motor for driving the mechanism as will hereinafter be more fully described. Also carried by the platform are bearings 4, having journaled therein a squared shaft 5 and extending in alinement with the squared shaft 5 is the washer driving shaft 6, being supported at one end within the bearing 7 carried by the platform anditsopposite end being adapted to be connected to the squared shaft 5 through the clutch 8. Pivotally connected to the bracket 9, carried by the platform is an operating lever 10 in the available use of the operator whereby the clutch 8 may be thrown into and out of engagement with the squared shaft 5 for a purpose which will be later described. Keyed to the power shaft 2 is a sprocket wheel 11 which is connected by meag of a sprocket chain 12 'to a large gear 13, keyed upon and carried by the squared shaft 5. From this it is obvious that upon the rotation of the shaft 2 a continuous rotation willbe transmitted to the squared shaft 5 through the sprocket and chain gearing as described.
Slidably mounted on the rails 14 and 15 is a wringer supporting frame 16, having mounted thereupon the wringer R. The wringer is of the usual construction and has extending from one roller shaft thereof the shaft 17 carrying a gear which is permanently in mesh with a bevel gear carried by the vertical shaft 18 and the mentioned gears are inclosed within a casing 19. To provide means for shifting the casing 27 a short lever 29 is provided, having its upper end connected to the casing through the ball and socket connection as shown and its opposite end of the lever being connected to a foot treadle lever 30. From this it is obvious that the casing 2'1 may be shifted by the foot treadle, but to provide means for shifting the same by hand a control rod 31 is provided which is connected to the foot treadle through the bell crank 32. Carried by the platform are vertically extending angle arm supports 33 being connected adjacent their upper ends by means of the angle bar 3d and carried by these angle bars are cross pieces 35 and 36 respectively. made of sheet metal and is suspended from the cross pieces 35 and 36 respectively and lower end of the tub has a contour substantially the same as the outer configuration ofthe clothes receiving drum 38. To prevent the water from splashing from the tub I as during the operation of'the' machine a cover 39 is ,pivotally mounted upon the tub and may be easily and readily swung out of the way; whereby the operator may easily gain access within the tub.
The clothes receiving drum which is sup ported withinthe tub comprises side memhers 40 being connected by cross pieces ii p which are spaced at intervals and are made of wood. Counter sunk within the sides of the cross pieces flare perforated metal strips '42 which permit the water within the tub to enter the drum containing the clothes to be washed. The inner, faces of the wooden strips 41 are corrugated as is shown and by counter sinking the perforated metal plates 42 within the sides of the wooden strips the clothes will be prevented from coming in contact with the edges of the metal plates which would tend to tear y or otherwise injure the clothes. The metal strips also add to the strength of the drum as they keep the wooden cross pieces from bulging or warping and. thereby insure durability to the structure. The drum is of a circular'contour and has provided within the wall thereof a door 43 whereby the operator may gain access to the interior of the clothes receiving drum The Washing machine tub 37 is- To provide means for supporting the drum within the tub the outer faces of the side members 40 have secured thereto metal disks &4 and 45 respectively. The disk 45 has extending therefrom a stub shaft 46 having its outer end of reduced diameter which is adapted to rest within the bearing 41-7 supported upon the inner face at one side of the tub. The bearing 47 is provided with a restricted portion 48 at its lower end in which the stub shaft normally rests but when removing the drum from the tub as will be later'described, the stub shaft will be raised so that it will rest within the enlarged portion i9 of the hearing as more clearly disclosed in Fig. 9 of the drawings. The opposite disk 44 carried by the drum has formed therewith an extension having recesses formed in the outer face thereof for the reception of the lugs 51 carried by the driving disk 52. In removing the drum from the tub the stub shaft 46 is raised until it is permitted to rest within the enlarged portion 49 of the bearing 47 whereby the drum may be shifted laterally to disengage the enlarged portion 50 from the lugs 51 and then the opposite side of the drum is raised to the same level. The drum is then shifted in the opposite direction, releasing the stub shaft from the bearing a7 whereby it may be readily removed from the tub in case of cleansing the interior of the tub or drum.
To provide means for rotating the drum alternately in opposite directions, I provide a shaft 53 being journaled within bearings formed integrally with the gear casings. 54
and 55 respectively. The lower end of the shaft 53 is provided with a bevel gear 56 which is in mesh with a bevel. gear 57 carrled by the outer end of the shaft 6. The
gears 56 and 57 respectively are'housed' within the casing 55. The upper end of the shaft 53 has loosely mounted thereon a pair of beveled gears 58, which are in constant mesh with the bevel gear 59 carried by shaft 60 which is journaled within a bearing formed integrally with the casing The shaft 60 carries at its inner end the disk The gear casing 54 is supported upon the outer face of the tub and has projected therefrom a semicircular flange 61 which extends within the tub and forms a support for the member 50 when removing tne drum from the tub. Carried by the chain 68 is a roll 71 which isadapted to ride upon the lower face of the cam lever for operating the lever during the traveling movement of the roller 71. A-stub-shaft 72 isjournaled within the frame and has v keyed thereto a ratchet 7 3 atone side of'the platform frame and a cam 74 at the opposite side of the platform frame. A crank sleeve 75, is pivotally mounted uponthestubshaft to the cam lever by means of the pitman link'77. Various details of the mechanism herein disclosed my be changed and modifications may be made without departingfrom the spirit of the invention .or sacrificing the efficiency of the same.
I claim:
1. In apparatus of the class described, a frame, a rotary drum in said frame, a gear rigid with the, drum, a shaft, beveled gears on said shaft in mesh with said first named gear, a clutch member interposed between said bevel gears to operatively connect either thereof with the shaft, a lever for throwing said clutch, a chain having a projection thereon for operating said lever.

4. In apparatus of the class described, a frame, a rotary drum therein, a gearon said drum,a reversible drive,comprising a pair I of beveled gears in engagement with said first named gear, a clutchmember for operatively connecting either of. said beveled gears with said gear, a link forroperating said clutch member, a cam for operating said link and means for shifting said cam into operative position, comprising a bent lever, a-chain having aprojection thereon for engagement with said bent lever whereby said cam will'be graduallymoved into operativeposition permitting aislow shifting, ofsaid clutch for in turn permitting thefmomentum of the drum to be dissipated prior to its reversal.
