C. J. STROKE. BURGLAR ALARM AND LOCK. APPLICATION FILED ocr. 20. 1916.
Patented Aprr 8, 1919.
il'zz irake CHARLES J. srno E, or BUFFALO, ivnw YORK.
BURGLAR-ALARM AND LocK.
1,299,808.? Original application filed. 311116 30, 1916,
To alllwhom it may concern:
Be'it known that 1, CH RLES. citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms and Locks; and I do hereby declare. the following to be a full, 'clear,:and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. p
This invention relates to a burglar alarm and lock, being a division of my application filed June 30, 1916, and serially numbered 106,916, and has forits primary object the provision of means permanently attached-to a door jamb or to the upper sash of a window, which is capable of being swung into the path of the door or lower sash to prevent the door or lower sash from being opened.
Another object of this invention is to provide a supporting plate pivotally secured to the door jamb or upper sash of the window and having a bell adjustably secured thereto which is adapted to be swung into the path of the door or lower sash of a window whereby upon an unauthorized person endeavoring to open either the door or lower sash it will engage the bell and sound an alarm and further prevent movement of the door or lower sash into open position.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a burglar alarm and lock of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efiicient and which, may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively small cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certainnovel features of construction. combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which: I I
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a burglar alarm and lock, constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrating it applied to a door jamb,
Fig. 2 is a top plan v ew of the same,
Specification of Letters Patent.
J. STROKE, a
dis atop plan view partly-in'section' illustratlng it applied to'a window sash.-'
Referring in detail to the drawing, the
numeral 1 indicates a door and 2 the jamb' to which my invention may be applied. The numerals 3 and 4 indicate upper and lower window sashes respectively of a window frame, to which my invention may be ap plied. a
An elongated supporting plate 5 is provided with an elongated slot 6 adjacent one end. The opposite end of the plate is bent at right angles as illustrated at 7 and is apertured to receive a bolt Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Serial No. 106,916. Divided and this application filed October 26, r 1916. Serial No. 126,683;
8. The bolt 8 is car ried by one arm portion of an L-shaped attaching plate 9 which has its other arm port10n provided with a plurality of openings to receive screws 10 or other like fastening elements.
A plate 11 is positioned upon the supporting plate 5- and is adjustably secured thereto by a bolt 12 extending through the elongated slot 6 and receiving a wing nut 13, whereby loosening the tension of the wing nut 13 upon the bolt' 12, the base plate 11 may be adjusted along the supporting plate 5, A bell 14 of the spring type having a control button 15 thereon is secured to the base plate 11. The base plate 11 has one of its ends bent at right angles as illustrated at 16 and islliif ilrcated to receive the button 15 of the In operation, when it is desired to attachmy invention to a door jamb, thev L-shaped attaching. plate 9 is secured to the jamb 2 by the screws 10 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, whereby the device is permanently secured to the door jamb. When desiring to render the device operable, the supporting plate 5 is swung upon the bolt 8 until its right angled end 7 overlies the free arm portion of the L-shaped attaching plate 9, thus positioning the bell 14 within the path of the door 1. If the door 1 is moved in the direction of an open position it will engage the button 15 and cause the bell 14 to sound an alarm. The door is further prevente from moving in an open position by the right angled bifurcated end 16 of the base plate 11 and the door will engage the same and pushing the button 15 will sound the bell, thus preventing the door from being opened by an unauthorized person.
In applying this invention to window sashes the L-shaped attachingplate 9 is secured to the upper sash by the screws 10 and by swinging the sup orti l plate 5 so that the right angled end over ies the free arm portion of the L-shaped plate 9, the bell will be positioned in the path of the lower sash. Upon upward movement zof the Ibvver sash it Will engage the button causing the bell -14 to ive an alarm, the lower sash also being prevented from fi1r= ther upward movement by the right angled end 16 of the supporting plate 11.-
Froi'n'th'e foregoing desbription taken in conneetion with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily noted that a device has been rovided which may be quickly ap= plied to either a Window or door to prevent the same from being opened and if endeavcred tb be o ened b an unauthorized person an alarm Will be sounded by the bell;
While I have shown and deseribed the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
W111 be understood thatniin'or changes in the on'strubtion, combinatldn and arrangemeat of parts may be made witbdatd pming from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
aving thi'l's fully described my invention, I claim; 7
A device of the character described comprising, an L-shaped plate adaptedfor attahifieiit to the ]a-mb of a door; an elem gated supperting plate having oileen'd por tiofi bent at right angles and contacting With one arm of said L-shaped plate a pivot element extending vertically through the am gularly disposed partied bf tbesup'p'ei-tin lateand the bbntabting aria bf the l==shapd plate; and a stop plate adjustably secured to said supporting plate; said step plate hawingits inner end portion angularly disposed fdrbontaet with the dea i In teeti'mbny whereof I aide my signature inpresenee of twqwitnessgs u CHARLES J STROKE.-
