Specification of Letters Patent.

Application meaaprn 25,1918. serial No. 230,373.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FREY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati, in thev county of Hamilton and State Vof Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Paving- Blccks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for an object to produce an improvedwood paving block which will prevent the buckling which usually occurs upon expansion due to frost and moisture when a pavement is .laid with the ordinary form of woodpaving block, and which will assume its normal shape when the moisture evaporates. f
A further object is to produce an :Lm-k
proved wood paving block which will permit the filling of tar and sand between adjacent blocks to be accomplished more easily which Figure l is a fragmental perspective View of a section of wood block pavement constructedof paving blocks embodying my invention. Y
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a paving block embodying my invention.y
My improved block is provided with a plane side 3 and a plane end 4. Side 5, opposite side 3, consists of a series of projections 6, extending in' one direction from the center of the side and a series of projections 7 extending in opposite directions to the direction of projections 6. Projections 6 and 7 have an elongated and a short side so that they resemble in cross section the shape of saw teeth. The end projections 6a and 7a formtherefore, acute .angles Vat the corners of the block, instead of the usual right Vangle corners in the ordinary rectangular wood paving block. End 8 opposite end L is formed by cutting a relatively shallowl and wide V-shapedV groove, which accentuates the acuteness of the vangle of the projectiona and which forms an acute angle 9, on the opposite side of the block. The projections 6 and 7 and the groove 8 are cut lin the direction of thev grain, so that the wearingV surfaces 10 disclose the grain 10 and the heart 11 of the wood. In laying a pavement in which Vmy improved wood block is employed, the blocksy A rangement of the ends of the blocks brings projections 7 in engagement with one-half of the plane face of one'block, with the projections 6 in engagement with the adjacent half of the plane face `of the next block.,
This is clearly disclosed in Fig. 1.
.ment with the plane end. The staggered ar- A decided advantage of a wood block embodying my improved construction, over wood blocks of ordinary construction, is that because of the projections, no `means such as parting strips have to be employedV for spacing the blocks from o-ne another,
since the projections space the blocks so that the filling material may be placed in the V-shaped grooves.
In addition tothis the projections, being formed on the side of the block opposite that on which the heart wood 11 is located, have the grain of the wood Vextending in such a direction that they do not dig into the face with which they contact but may be compressed against the plane faces of the adjacent Vblocks, should the expansion of the blocks during dampandfreeZing weather cause the blocks to Ybe pressed more closely together, and when the blocks dry, the proj ections resume their normal condition.
The provision of grooves upon the ends of the blocks spacesthem and prevents trans- Y verse buckling.v
Having thus descrlbed my invention, what I claim is;
1. A'wood paving block of rectangular` shape and having the upper and lower sur- Y faces thereof disclosing end grain, a plane side connecting the upper and lower surfaces, a side opposite the plane side connecting the upper and lower surfaces and provided with `two series of projections shaped like saw teeth and extending from the upper to the lower surfaces one series being inclined in one direction and the other series being inclined in the opposite direcf tion. f
27A paving block of substantially reein testiinony whereof, I have helreunto' tangular shape having a plane side, the side subscribed my name this 23rd day of April,VV
opposite the planeV side being Vprovided. with 1918.
a series of projections shaped like Saw 7 Y GEORGE We FREY. 51 teeth, a plane end and an end opposite'the .VVtnesses: Y s
plane end having an obtuse central groove Y i 'W. THORNTON BOGERT,
extending across it. WALTER F. MURRAY.
