SAMUEL OROMPTON, OF
BELFAST, IRELAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 ARTHUR GREGG, OF BELFAST, IRELAND.
DEVICE FOR REMOVDTG ANDFASTENING THE RIVETS SECURING THE KNIVES 0F REAPIN'G AND LIKE MACHINES,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GROMPTON, of Belfast, Ireland, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Removing and Fastening the Rivets Securing the Knives of Reaping and like Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the cutting back bar or knife carrier is held so that the knives lie on top of said fence with the knife bar against its back edge. Behind said fence I provide a tool carrying slide which is suitably supported and adapted to be reciprocated by suitable means toward and away from the fence, so that, by pressing the tool forward the knife can be forced off the bar by shearing the rivets fastening it thereto. Preferably, the means for reciproeating the slidable bar consists of a crank and operating hand lever, the crank, which is supported in suitable bearings, engaging a slot, or opening, in the slide so that, when the crank is oscillated the bar will be reciprocated. At the front of the slide I provide the tool for removing the knives from the knife bar, which tool is removable and capable of being replaced by another tool for securing the knives to the knife bar. For removing the knives the tool is so made that it fits over the top and along the back edge of a knife, or tooth, behind a rivet, but is not deep enough to reach the top edge of the knife carrying bar, so that, when the tool is forced forward by the slidable bar and against the back edge of the knife, enough pressure will be exerted to cause the knife to be broken off the bar at the rivet. This operation is repeated at each rivet until the knife or tooth is free. The portions of the rivets remaining in the back bar can be readily re moved by a punch secured to the slide bar Specification of Letters Patent.

rivets, or for securing more than one rivet in position at a time.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood I have hereunto appended explanatory drawings, whereon,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, partlyin section, and showing the back bar and tool in position for the removal of the knife.
.Fig. 2 is a plan view corresponding to Fig.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
Figs. 4 and 5 are, respectively, elevation and plan views of the knife removing tool.
Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are respectively, sectional, plan, and end views, of a rivet removing tool.
Fig. 9 is a section of part of the device showing a riveting tool ready to be pressed forward to form a snap head on a rivet. This figure also shows an elevation of the knife 70 withv its rivets.
In the example shown 'on the drawings the device has a projecting support or fence bar a secured to, or forminga part of, the sole plate 6 on which a movable tool carrying slide 0 is supported and adapted to be reciprocated in a path at right angles to the aforesaid fence bar. The actuation of the tool carrying slide 0 is obtained by means of a crank oZ supported in bearings b on the sole plate 6. This crank engages between upstanding ears 0 on the slide bar 0 and is connected by a lever f, and link 9, with an operating hand lever h, fulcrumed at id. The slide a is shown in mid position. At the front end of the slide bar 0 the knife removing tool 2' is adjustably secured. This tool is shown in larger detail at Figs. 4 and 5 and it will be seen it is so made that it fits partly over the top and partly down the back edge of a knife is, lying on the fence bar a with its back bar 70 against the bar a. The part i of the tool is not deep enough to reach the top edge of the bar 70 When the tool is forced forward, by the forward movement of the slide 0 operated by hand lever h, suflicient pressure is exerted on the back edge of the knife to cause it to be freed from the bar 70 by breaking away, or shearing, the rivet at the part 00. This operation is repeated at each rivet until the knife is free. The portions of the rivets remaining in the bar 70 can then be forced out by means of the punching tool Z, shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, which replaces the tool 71 for this purpose. Similarly by fitting a holding block m- (Fig. 9) on the fence bar a and securing a riveting tool a at the end of the slide 0 new knives 70 can be riveted on to the knife bar 70 which is arranged vertically as shown in Fig. 9.
Although I have shown only one tool on the slide bar 0, I may, as already stated provide a plurality of tools on one slide bar for the purpose of expediting the work of removing the knives from, or securing them to, the knife bars. V
The device may be made portable and be capable of being bolted or clamped to a bench or table.
The device hereinbefore describedwill be Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
found of great service in the repair of farming machinery and implements.
Having now fully descrlbed my lnvention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. A device for removing the blunt knives from the knife bars of reaping and like machines comprising a sole plate with upwardly projecting support for the knife bar thereon, a slide, a crank for reciprocating the slide, means for operatnig'the crank, and a tool secured to the slide and reciprocated thereby to operate on the knife to rev move it from the bar.
A device for removing the blunt knives from the knife bars of reapingand like machines comprising a sole plate, bearings on the sole plate, a crank shaft carried in said bearings a slide, rs on the slide engaging the crank of said crank shaft, a tool on the slide, and lever and link means for rocking the crank shaft and reciprocating the slide to bring the tool into operative engagement with the knife to remove the latter from the Washington, D. C.
