POCKET CUTLEBY. APPLICATION FILED JuLY23. v191's.

OTTO L. HEMMING, 0F NEWHAVEN', CONNECTICUT.
POCKET-CUTLERY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A t. 1, 1919.
Application filed July 23, 1918. Serial No. 246,274.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro L. HEMMING, citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Pocket- Cutlery; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to pocket cutlery, and particularly to that class having a plurality of blades with a partition extending longitudinally through the handle separating the blades. is to produce a knife of this character having but few inexpensive parts which can be readilyand cheaply assembled.
Referring to the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a two bladed knife;
Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the blank to form the sides and back of the handle:
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the handle and partition;
Fig. 4 is an edge View of a completed handle;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the handle and partition;
Fig. 6 is a detail View of the partition;
Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the springs;
Fig. 8 is an enlarged broken sectional view of the handle and broken view of the partition, and Fig. 9 is a broken view partly in section of the handle and one of the blades and its spring.
The blank 1 is shaped to! form, when folded, the sides 2, 3, and the back 4 of the handle. The curved projections 5, 6 form the butt end of the handle. The holes 7, 8 in the blank are for the rivet 9, and the holes 10, 11 for the locating pin 12. The partition 13 separates the blades 14, 15, and the hole 16 embraces the rivet 9, and the angular slot 17 of the partition embraces the pin 12.
After the blank is folded to form the handle, assembling the several parts connected therewith is an'inexpensive operation. The pin 12 is first located in the handle and the partition 13 is next dropped into place with The object of my invention handle, thus firmly locating the partition in the center of the handle with no possibility of lateral movement. The end 18 is so shaped with respect to the curved end of the butt of the handle as to prevent its lifting. Any variation of the distance between the pin 12 and the apex a is thus overcome by the depth and angle of the slot 17. Without this angular slot, it would be necessary to employ an extra rivet at the butt of the handle to maintain the partition in its central position. The assembling is completed by simply anchoring the springs to the pin 12 and securing the blades by means of the rivet 9.
The pin 12 is in no sense a rivet, it merely serves as a fulcrum for the springs and a locating point for the partition.
The central portion of the inner edge of the partition is cut away at b to form the short bearing points 0 and thus insures a support for the .partition against any unevenness occuring in the back of the handle.
The several parts of the knife are so constructed that they can readily be assembled by unskilled labor, thus materially reducing the cost of manufacture to a point where a serviceable article can be ofiered to the public at a very reasonable price. The principal time saving feature in assembling the knife, lies in the self adjustment of the partition through the medium of its inclined s 0t. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a knife of the character described, having a handle formed of a one piece sheet metal blank whose sides are inwardly curved to form the butt of the handle, blades, springs for the blades and a fulcrum pin for the springs. of a central partition having a rearwardly inclined slot in its inner edge embracing the fulcrum pin to locate and maintain the rear end of the partition at the apex of the butt of the handle.
2. In a knife of the character described, having a ,handle formed of a one piece sheet metal blank with an inwardly curved and closed butt end, blades, springs underlying the blades and a fulcrum pin for the springs,
of a central partition having a rearwardly inclined slot in its inner edge to embrace the fulcrum pin and locate and maintain the rear end of the partition at the apex of the butt of the handle, the rear end of said partition so shaped with respect to the I curved butt end of the handle a to prevent its outward movement, and the central portion of the inner, edge of said partition cut away to form bearing points near its 1 ends.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
OTTO L. HEMMING.
