Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM D. Mo- CULLOUGH and THOMAS MAHONEY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Upholstery Spring Construction, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to spring upholstery construction and to spring supporting strips whereby great rigidity is obtained with lightness, there being a minimum number of clips or attaching parts while the assembly is made readily as there is no need of special attaching implements.

The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a plan View partially broken away of a spring construction that embodies features of the invention, and

Fig. 2 is a view in detail in perspective, greatly enlarged, of a base strip and spring.

As herein shown in preferred form the main frame having the form and contour desired and usually constructed with a rim wire 1, has cross strips 2 that are U-shaped in section, and are preferably bent out of sheet metal. These strips are disposed in upright position, that is, with the plane of the flanges 3 and 4 extending outwardly from the base of the structure. In the case of a seat cushion the flanges are substantially upright. At intervals the strip is oilset in the plane of the flanges so as to provide portions 5 at regular intervals into which the base coils 6 of the usual upright coiled spring common in such constructions may be placed, the coil resting on the flange at for example. The edges of the flanges are pinched together as indicated at 7, and hold the spring firmly in place. The shape of the offset is immaterial provided it is of a character which permits the insertion of the base coil between the flanges. Likewise the connection of the U-strip with the frame itself is not per so a part of the invention. As herein indicated the connection is made through the base coil of the spring but other modes of attachment of the strip to the frame directly may be employed.

3. In a spring upholstery construction, a U-section strip offset in the general plane of the flanges and a spiral spring with axis substantially parallel to the plane of the flanges, resting on one of the flanges and lying between the offset portions of the flanges which are inbent to retain it.

4. In a spring upholstery construction, a base, a U-section strip thereon offset in the plane of the flanges which extend toward the face of the construction and a spiral spring with the axis generally parallel to the plane of the flanges and the base coil resting on one flange margin and lying between oflset portions of both flanges which are bent to retain it.

5. In a spring upholstery construction, a base, U-section strips thereon in parallel relation, each oflset in the general plane of the flanges which extend toward the face of the construction and spiral springs each with a supporting coil resting on adjacent flanges of a pairof strips and lying between offset portions of both flanges of each strip which are bent to retain the coil.
