APPLICATION FILED 1AN.I3,I9I9.

INV 'NTUR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUELLA CORNELL, F TOLEDO, OHIO.
UNCOUPLING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
"Be it known that I, LUnLLA CORNEPLLB. citizen'of the United States, and a resldent of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Uncoupling.Devices; and I do hereby declare the following who a full, clear, and exact description of the inventlon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
.My invention relates to an uncoupllng device and it has for its ob ect to provide a means for operating a coupling pin at points remote therefrom, that is, at points that are safe for the trainmen to operate from. It also hasnfor its object to provide an eilicient uncoupling device which may be applied to and used in connection with the car couplers now commonly used by the railroads.
The invention may be modified by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit thereof. I have selected a construction containing the invention for purposes of illustration and shall describe the same hereinafter. The construction selected coal car or a gondola car.
bar attached to the car 1n a manner well known in the art and having a link socket 3 in which the coupling pin 4 is located and mounted for vertical movements through the draw-bar 2 and through the link socket 3.
The pin may be operated either from the top of the car or from the side corner of the It is connected by means of a short chain 5 with an angular rod 6. The body portion of the rod 6 extends vertically up- 50. bent into the form of a handle whereby the ward and its upper end is located near the top of the car. The upper end 7 may be rod 6 may be seized and lifted upward which will operate also to lift the pm 4 and peri mit the coupling link to enter the socket 3 of the draw-bar 2. This obviates the neces sity of the brakemen, or trainmen, climb- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing down the end of the car in order that the car may be coupled to another car.
In order to prevent the rotation of the rod and also to keep the pin in alinement with the hole in the draw-bar, guide rods 8 are provided, which are suitably located at a point slightly remote from the end of the car and on each side of the laterally extending portion 9 of the rod 6. As the rod 6 is moved up and down, the portion 90f the rod slides between the rods 8 and thus keeps the pin in alinement with the hole in the draw-bar. The rods 8 may be bent at their ends to form bracket portions whereby they may be secured to the end of car. Their length is such that they will extend over the whole distance that the laterally extending portion 9 of the rod 6 may be moved. The movements of the rod 6 are limited by the guide members 10, through which the rod 6 extends, and adjustable collars 11 that are secured to the rods 6. The adjustable collars 11 are located between the guide members 10 and so located, with reference to the guide members 10, that when the pin 4 is in its coupling position, the lower parts 10 and 11 will be in contact and when the pin 4 is clear of the socket 3 although its lower end may still be in the hold of the draw-bar 2, the upper parts 10 and 11 will be in contact. Moreover, this distance or movement of the pin 4 and the rod 6 is less than the vertical measurements of the rods 8, 8.
If desired, the running board 12 located on the top of the car, may be extended over the end of the car and be provided with an opening 13 through which the hand of the brakeman may be inserted in order that the handle may be seized and lifted touncouple the car.
In order that the car may be uncoupled from the side of the car, or rather from the corner of the carwithout stepping over the tracks, a rod 14 may be connected with the laterally extending portion 9 of the rod 6 and on the outside of the rods 8, that is, between the rods 8 and the end of the laterally extending portion 9 of the rod 6. The rod 14 is loosely held in the eye 15 formed in the bracket 16, that is secured to the end of the car. The rod 14 may be secured in position against extended longitudinal movement by means of adjustable collars 17 so located on opposite sides of the brackets 16 as to permit such longitudinal movements as are necessary to allow vertical movements of the rod 6. The rod 14: may also be provided with a handle 18.
When it is desired to operate the coupling pin l from the corner of the car the lever which is thus formed of the rod 14 pivoting in tlie; eye 15 may be operated so as to cause the rod 6 to be lifted and consequently to lift the pin 4t. The movements of the rod lea-11d consequently the pin 4: will be limited lCopies of this patent may be obtained for vertically along the end of the car and the laterally extending portion of the rod eX- tending over a coupling pin, means connecting the coupling pin with the laterally extending portion of the rod, guide members located on each side of the laterally extending portion of the rod and at a point remote from the end of the car, the rod having adjustable collars for limiting the movements of the rod and the pin relative to the draw bar and so located as to prevent the withdrawal of the lower end of the pin out of the draw bar.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
