-Be it known that we,wEDw1N H. SADLER and ERNEST L.' HALL, citizens of the United States, residing atfHuntington Park, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and usefnllmprovements in Supporting Devices for Automobiles, ofwhich the 1 following is`a specification.
This ,invention relates tonew and useful improvements in supporting devices for automobilesk and the principal object of the invention isto provide means kfor lifting the wheels of theautomobile from the ioor of the garage. f f r f i" Another object of the'invention is to provide meanswhereby the momentumrv'of the automobile fwill'foperatel means to raise the Wheels off the ground. n

In these views 1 indicates a pair of supporting-"beams, on which kis located a pair of front inclined blocks 2 and a pair of rear inclined blocks 3. f' The inclination ofthe front edges of these blocksis .greater than thatr of the'rear edges. The rear blocks are provided with substantiallyrat portions at their apexes. f On each of the front blocks is slidingly mounted an axle engaging member 4, which engages the inclined edge ofthe block. If desired, the member may be connected with the block by the tongue and' at A. The endsvof the U are so spaced as t0 receive the axle with the part thereof resting oneach end. The members 8 are connected by links V9 to a sliding frame 10. This frame is connected with the blocks 3 by the tongue and groove connections 1l. As shown, the links 9 have their yends pivoted kto the members 8 and the frame and springs -12 connect' said links, intermediate their ends, with said frame.
:13 indicates a bar having one end connected with the sliding frame `10 'and its other end extending between the front blocks 2. A guidebar 14 is connected with the bar 13 and this guide bar is suitably supported. The front end of the bar 13 is provided with slots 15 and a bracket 16 is slidingly connected with the bar 13 by means of the bolts 17 passing through said slots. The bracket is normally held in' its rearmost position 'by means of the spring 18. The-'bracket is provided with an upwardlextension 19, which is provided with a vertical bore 2O` The `bore receives the end of a rod 21 which is normally held in the upper end of said bore by spring 22. This rod is provided with a bent upper end as shown. f
The" rod 21 extends high enough to be struck by the front axle, indicated at C, of the automobile. The further movement of the automobile will cause the bracket to move forwardly and this action will cause the., bar V13 to pull the slidin frame forwardly so as to force the mem ers 8 up thel inclined edges of the blocks 3. The parts are so positioned that as the automobile moves forward and the members 8 move up the incline the truss rods will enter the space between the legs ,of the members 8 and said'members will engage the rear axles near the end of their movement so as to force .the rear wheels oil' the floor when the members reach the end of their movement and are resting on the flat portions. it about the time the front axle strikes the rod 2l it will also come in contact with the front members d so that the momentum of the automobile will cause said members to slide up the inclined blocks and thus lift the i'ront wheels ed the iioor.

lt will t ius be seen that when it is desired to remove the automobile from the device it is simply necessary to withdraw the catches by pulling the cables 87. This action will allow the weight of the car to lower the members 3, 'by causing the levers to rock on the-ir pivots, so that the rear wheels will come in contact with the door. Then, by starting the motor, the automobile may be backed oli the device. ln this action the parts will be returned to normal position by the movement of the automobile and the springs. lf it is desired to run forward, instead of backward. the forward movement of the automobile will push the sliding member over the highest parte of the blocks and down the stront inclined edges ot the blocks so that the axle will be released the same as if the automobile was backed. As the front axle moves downwardly it will engage the bent end of rod 2l and force said rod downwardly outI of its way.
The rear blocks 3 are guided in their vertical movement by the pins 38 engaging the recesses 39 formed in said blocks.4
Bumpers l0 are located adjacent the iront blocks against which the iront wheels of the automobile will strike to prevent the car.

it will be seen that the rear blocks vare ci less height than the liront blocks so that the iront axle can pass over the rear blocks. 0f course, it will be understood, that the automobile ina'y be backed upon the device but to do this the blocks must be reversed.

A device ot the class described, comprising a pair of front and rear blocks hav-Y ing their upper edges inclined both forV wardly and rearwardly, axle engaging members slidingly engaging said blocks, a. member located between the front blocks and having a part thereon adapted to be struck by the front axle, means permitting Jche said part to be depressed to permit the aut-omobile to pass down the forwardly inclined edges oi the blocks, means for connecting said member with the axle engaging members of the rear blocks, and means for movingV said rear blocks vertically.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a. pair ci front and nean blocks having their upper edges inclined both forwardly and rearwardly, the apeXes of the rear blocks beingflat, axle engaging members slidingly engaging said blocks, a member located between the iront blocks and having a part thereon adapted to be struck by the front axle, means permitting the said part to be depressed to permit the automobile to pass down the forwardly inclined edges of the blocks, means for connecting said member with the axle engaging members on the rear blocks, and means for moving said rear blocks vertically.

A device of the class described comprising a pair of front and rear inclined blocks, axle engaging members slidingly engaging said blocks and adapted to be forced up the inclines by the momentum of the au- Icomobile and means for moving said rear blocks vertically, said means comprising a pair of pivoted levers having their upper parts slotted, a pair of links lhavingl their outer ends pivoted in said slots, a plate carried by the block and having a slot therein, the inner ends of said links being pivoted to said plate, braces having their inner ends pivoted in the slot in the plate and their outer ends pivoted to the links and catches for holding the levers in operative position.
