KURT HEITLEB, OF NEW YORK, H. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4,1919.
This invention relates to lifters for jarsand other articles, one of the objects of the invention being to provide an implement having yieldable members arranged to form a clamping device that can be inserted into a relatively deep receptacle containing jars or the like and engage the same in order to lift them out of the receptacle. The device, however, is not limited to use in connection with ars, as it is especially arranged for liftingsmall articles, such as eggs, potatoes, &c. To accomplish this result I have resorted to a special construction of the jaws of the lifter, the details of which I will now proceed to describe and finally claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a face view of my improved lifter;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view thereof, enlarged, the section being taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the jaw-members;
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the device engaging a small article, such as a vegetable or egg; and
Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating the device as engaging a jar.
As herein arranged my improved lifter consists of a pair of leg-members (Sand 7, which in this instance are integral and formed intermediate the ends into a loop or coil-springmember 8 arranged to maintain said leg-members separated; hence, when the leg-members are forced together, to engage a jar or smaller article, the loop or spring-member 8 will be placed under an increased tension. Intermediate the ends, the leg members are offset, as at 8 and 9. to provide a relatively wide jaw 10, the members of which are indicated by 11' and 12, said members being preferably covered by a sheath of rubber, 13, or any other suitable material, to prevent the jaws from rusting and at the same time providing a better grip or hold on the articles engaged thereby.
The essential feature of my invention is villi the formation of the jaw-members at the lower ends thereof to provide for the double function of grasping a relatively large article, such as a jar, or a relatively small article, such as an egg or vegetable. To accomplish this result I form the end thereof into a loop, which in this instance is triangular, the base member 14; being arcuate, which is the preferable formation. The open space 15 between the side- members 16 and 17 of the triangle allow for the passage thereinto of the ends of a relatively small article, indicated by 18 in Fig. 4. ()ne of the advantages derived from this triangular formation is that when a small article is engaged the arcuate 0r base-member of the triangle can pass under the article and properly support same, as is evident from an inspection of Fig. l, the space 15 being large enough to permit the side- members 16 and 17 to pass over the ends of the average size vegetable. egg. &c. As eggs and cooked vegetables (principally) will not stand any great amount of pressure. the peculiar formation of the jaws of my improved lifter adapts same to lift even the most delicate or tender article. as no pressure is exerted to 'ause the litter to engage such articles. For lifting jars &c. the arcuate base-member 14 of the jaw is well adapted to engage the neck of jars, as indicated in Fig. 5.
For the sake of simplicity. the formation of the lower end of the jaw-members will be referred to in the claims as a loop.
As can be seen in Fig. 2 the lower corners of the triangle are offset relatively to the upper end thereof. thus providing shelflike members or portions 19 which prevent the heading of a jar (indicated bvlO in Fig. 5) from coming in contact with the side-members of the loop. or the sheathrovering same. Flll'tllil'ilinl'e. llllS formation allows the arcuate supporting members 1% to be pressed against the neck 21 of the jar. as said iarcuate member is offset or out of alinemcnt with the side-members of the loop.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A. lifting device consisting of a pair of leg-members yicldably connected, jawmembers carried thereby at the lower ends thereof, said ja-w-n'ieurbers being formed into a. loop embodying an arcuate gripping member, said arcuate gripping member being ofi'set with respect to the side-members of the loop.
2. A lifting device consisting of a pair of leg-membergeach of the leg-members terminating in a jaW-membeY bent to form a triangle to provide an open space, the basemember of the triangle being arcuate and 5 oflset with respect to the side-members of theeti-iangle to form shelves at the lower 0p'- posite corners of the triangle.
