Description

- A. P. GILLESPIE. STAFF HOLDER AND ATTACHING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FI LED MAY 2, 19H- Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
INVENTOR WITNESSES to receive a STAFF HOLDER AND ATTACHING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application filed May 2, 1917. Serial No. 166,027.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER P. GIL- LESPIE, residing at Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsyl- Vania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Staff Holders and Attaching Devices, of which improvements the following is aspecification.
y invention relates to devices for bold ing staffs; particularly flag stafi's, and for attaching them to various supports. The object thereof is to provide a device of the character described which will be simple and inexpensive in construction, and whereby be quickly attached to or rea support, and, when attached thereto, effectively held in the desired position.
While the device which I used for attaching flag, staffs to various provide may be pennant, or other objects or supports, it finds particular adaptability'to attaching such' staffs to the radiator-filling pipes of automobiles; and is thus illustrated herein.
'Figure lot the rawings is a perspective view of the device which I provide, and Fig. 2 a similar View thereof when used to attach a flag to an automobile radiator-filling pipe.
The staff holder and attaching device which I provide comprises a spring yoke l and a staff holder 2 secured to each other.
he yoke is, as indicated, open at one side support such as the radiatorfilling pipe 3, and is constructed of spring metal (preferably a fiat strip thereof), the inherent resiliency of which is the sole medium of fastening the device to such support. The staff holder, which is also preferably constructed of a fiat strip of yielding metal, is provided with spaced yielding members for engaging a stall at two points.
These yielding members form of fork-shaped spring clips 4 at the upper end of the holder, and a U-shaped spring clip 5'at the lower end thereof.
hile, as already stated, the device is preferably constructed of two strips of flat spring metal, it may beconstructed of other forms of resilient material.
hen using the device, the lower end of a staff rests upon the base or horizontallydisposed portion 6 of the holder 2, and the staff is engaged at its lower end by the clip 5, and at a point above its end by the fork shaped clips 4. Thus the staff may be firmly held and attached to a support without the necessity of manipulating bolts or screws, which are also objectionable in that they become loosened by the vibration of an autobile when the device is used for attaching a flag thereto.
If desired, the yoke 1 may be faced with a felt strip 7 to eliminate rattling and to prevent marring the support which it engages.
-I claim as my invention:
prising a yoke constructed of a substantially flat strip of spring metal and open at one side to receive a support, and a holder constructed of a substantially flat strip of spring metal secured to said yoke, the upper end of said holder being slit and bent laterally to form fork-shaped clips adapted to yieldingly engage a flag-staff and the lower end U-shaped to receive and hold a staff, the base portion of said lower end being horizontally disposed and adapted to sup port the end of a flag-staff.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ALEXANDER P. GILLESPIE.
