Description
MvCHRiSTENSEN CONVEYER FOR BOOK STITCHING MACHINES.
APPLICATION HLED APR. 6. 1917- PatentedMan LlQlE}.
ATTORNEY:
COMPANY, OF RACINE,
CONVEYER FOR BOOK- NE, wIscoNsiN, ASSIGNOR T cHRIsTENsEN MACHINE wIscoNsIN, A CORPORATION or wIsooNsIN.
STITCHING MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, MARTIN CHRISTENSEN,
a citizen of the United States, and resident mechanism. In ordinary machines of this placed upon a fixed type the signatures are inverted V-shaped saddle and moved therealong by pins carried by an endless belt within the saddle. This manner of feed is objectionable because of liability of soiling the sheets and of the changing of the position of the signatures with respect to each other, due to frictional contact with the fixed saddle, with the result that the signatures are out of line when they reach the stitchers. To overcome this difficulty I have provided a movable conveyer which is provided with means for preventing sagging of the parts forming the conveyer with respect to each other and also in that portions of the members forming the saddle also form one of the connecting links of the conveyer.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of the device embodying the invention, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a detail bottom view of a portion of the conveyer;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-8 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 3 showing the conveyer used with a different form of guide.
The conveyer, driven in any suitable manner, is mounted on sprockets carried by a suitable frame and for detailed explanation of a type of frame which may be used with the conveyer reference is had to my Patent No. 1,140,734 granted May 25, 1915. In the drawings I show a portion of the rear stand ard 9, which carries a tightener frame 11/ Specification of Letters Patent.
groups of signatures abutting against the sides 9 Patented B13124, 1919.
Application filed April 6, 1917. Serial No. 160,172.
which is provided with a sprocket wheel 12 and one of the tightener bolt members 14 which extends through the standard 9 and is adjustably secured thereto by nuts 16.
he conveyer consists of a plurality of members 4 hingedly connected together to form a movable saddle. Each member 4 has an inverted V-sha-ped portion 5, inwardly extending portions 6, and spaced apart de pending flanges 7. Each flange consists of vertical portions 8 and 9 parallel to each other and connected by a transverse portion 10 forming shoulders 11, said portions 9 and 10 forming in effect a channel 1n which links 12 are pivotally mounted at adjoining ends of the members by pins 13 passing through them and through said members, said links and 10 to produce a straight pull on the conveyer members and thus positively prevent sagging of said members with respect to each other path whereby when running in a straight any liability of disarranging' or catching the signatures between the members is prevented and whereby the members themselves together with the links form an endless conveyer.
Means are provided for guiding the upper run of the conveyer consisting of a horizontally disposed channel bar 1 1 in which the conveyer runs, the lower edges of the flanges 7 and the bottom of the links 12 resting upon the web 15 of said bar or the guide means may be a single bar 16 disposed between the depending flanges 9 of the members 4.
It will be noted that the inclined sides of the saddle members 4: project laterally beyond the guide means so that the sheet or sheets carried by the saddle are spaced away from the same thereby preventing any interference therewith or any chance for soiling the sheet.
With this construction, it is only necessary to drop the groups of signatures onto the conveyor and they will be carried to the stitching mechanism in proper alinement by pins 17 and without coming into contact with the other parts of the conveyer and without liability of the signatures being disarranged or caught between the members of the conveyer because of the connection which prevents the vertical movement of the members with respect to each other on the upper run of the conveyer.
I am. aware that the specific construction herein shown and described is capable of some modification without departing from the spirit of the invention and it is therefore my intention to claim all the novelty inherent in the invention.
What I claim asmy invention is:
1. In a signature conveyor, the combination of a plurality of signature supporting elements having signature supporting surfaces of inverted V-shape cross-sections and lengthwise extending ShOL ldered portions below said supporting surfaces, and means for securing said elements together in abutting relation to; form a smooth continuous supporting surface for the groups of signatures and for preventing sagging of the conveyor when moving in a straight path comprising links hingedly connecting the ends of adjoining elements togetherand abutting against said shouldered portions.
2. In a signature conveyor, the combination of a plurality of signature suporting elements having inverted V-shaped signature. supporting surfaces and side portions below said surfaces extending inwardly and downwardly then outwardly and clownwardly to form spaced inner lengthwise extending shouldered portions, and means for securing said elements together in abutting relation to form a smooth continuoussupporting surface for the groups of signatures Copies. of this patent may be obtained. for five cents each,, by, addressing the links having their and for preventing sagging of the conveyer when moving in a straight path comprising ends disposed between the sides of said elements andpivotally connecting the ends of adjoining elements together and" abuttingagainst said shouldered portions.
3. 'The combination, with supporting means, of a movable saddle conveyor mounted thereon comprising a plurality of inverted V-shaped members hingedly connected together and means, for guiding the upper run o-f'the conveyor, the inclined sides of said members extending laterally beyond the. guide means to. spacetheseportions of the signatures dependin below the sides of the saddle away from Send guide means.
l lhe combination, with supporting means, of a movable saddle conveyor mounted thereon comprising a plurality of arrow-head shaped members hingedly connected together, and means for guiding the upper run'of-the conveyer,.the side portions of the arrow-head shaped members projecting laterally beyond said gui mean space these portions of" the signatures, depending below the sides of the saddle away from said guide means.
In: testimony Whereof,.I aflix signature.
MARTIN CHRISTENSEN.
