VALVE.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar.. d, 1919,.
Application filed January 6, 1917. Serial No. 140,952.
To all 'whom t mayconoem:
Be it known that I, OSCAR J. MEsNA, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pelican Rapids, in the county of Otter Tail and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in# Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves and the invention has more especial reference to `an improved multiple-way valve.
` The invention has for its principal object to provide a multiple way valve especially adapted for use in connection with the eX- haust manifold of motor driven vehicles, whereby, passage of the spent gases from the engine or motor through the exhaustv manifold may be varied at will by the operator, in order that the same may be directed into an exhaust operated signal, which sig-` nals are usually carried lby or in proximity of the exhaust manifold, or to the engine muffler, or directly through the exhaust ctout, whereby, to accelerate the speed of the en ine.
s an object 'of equal importance, the invention aims to provide a novel form of casing for receiving the multiple way valves, the same having a plurality of ports therein adapted for registration with the ways of the valve and also being provided with coupling means so as to readily permit the connecting of the casing ports to the device for receiving the spent gases therefrom.
Among other aims and objects of the invention to be recited, the provision of a valve of the character mentioned, with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, cost of production small, and efliciency and operation high.
All of the foregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangements of the parts of the preferred embodiment of my invention will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings formin a part thereof, wherein the preferred emodiment of the invention is illustrated for the purpose of facilitating a clear understanding of the present improvements.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is `a horizontal section in elevation of my improved multiple way valve;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, a
.shown in section;
portion of the casing geing broken away and F ig. 3 is a fragmental detail in top plan ofthe valve receiving chamber the closure plate removed therefrom and showing means for fastening said closure plate thereto.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, and in connection with which like reference characters will refer to the same parts in the several views, my improved' multiple wayvalve in its preferred embodiment comprises an annular valve receiving chamber or casing 1, the said casin being provided with spaced apart radialy disposed ports 2, the said ports having necks 3 extending therefrom, in order that the same may be connected with the various devices which are to receive the spent gases from the exhaust manifold of the engine. Set screws 4: are arranged in suitably screw threaded openings formed in the outer extremities of the coupling necks 3, and obviously, provide means for securing such devlces as may be engaged therewith. A concentrically disposed bearino'` pocket 5 is arranged in the bottom of the casing 1 and serves as means for rotatably receiving the bearing pintle of the multiple way valve, which will be hereinafter more fully described. rlo provide means whereby a cover plate 6 may be arranged over the open upper end of the casing 1 and secured thereto, apertured ears 7 areformed integral with the upper marginal edges of the said casing to point adjacent the jointure of the coupling neck 3 with the same. Similar apertured ears 8 are formed upon the peripheral edge of the closure plate 6, which obviously, is of a shape complemental to the shape of the casing 1, and, when alined with the ears 7, are adapted to receive set screws 9, or other suitable fastening devices, therethrough. The annular closure plate 6 is provided with a concentrically arranged bearing opening 10, it being noted, that the sail bearing opening is in direct vertical alinement with the pocket 5 as formed in the casing bottom.
Referring now to the novel cut off means or valve, the same includes a disk like body 11, which body is of a size to permit the snug reception thereof within the casing l and has formed upon the upper and lower faces, concentrically arranged bearing pintles 12, which pintles are adapted to be received by the bearing pockets 5 and bearing opening 10, the upper bearing pintle 12, having dit dit
dit

a squared shank or extension 13 formed thereon whereby an arm 11 which is provided with a corresponding opening in one end thereof ma)v be arranged over the same. A set screw 15 is carried by the adjacent extremity of the arm 11 and by turning the saine inwardly into engagement with the adjacent portion of the shank 13, it will be appreciated` that said arm will be securely held in position. A second annular opening is formed upon the remainingextremity of the arm 1l and has alined therewith, a similar opening formed within one end of a connecting rod 16, thus, permitting the insertion of a locking bolt 17. It is to be understood, that the connecting rod 16 extends to a point upon the vehicle in proxniity of the operator thereof, whereby, the same may be readily engaged so as to cause rotation of the valve 11 in the desired direction. Furthermore, the connecting rod .16, may be and preferably is engaged with a foot lever supported by the Hooi-ing of the vehicle. By so connectingthe rod 16, operation of the saine may be readily effected. A plurality of longitudinally extending annular ways 18, 19 and 20 are arranged within the valve body 11, the way 19, preferably, extending through the middle thereof, with the ways 18 and :20 arranged upon either side of the same. Attention is directed to the fact, that the way 19 extends straight through the valve body 11, thus, permitting the direct passage of the spent gases from the exhaust manifold of the engine, through the oppositely disposed neck, it being evident, that one of the said coupling necks are engaged to the extremity of the exhaust manifold while the other is connected with the-engine muiier, but, the ways 18 and 20 are substantially arcuate and are curved in opposite directions, hence permitting the same to be engaged with the exhaust manifold engaging ports of the casing 1 and in one of the right-angularly disposed ports,
the coupling neck of which ports may be connected to an exhaust operated signal and the usual cut out pipe, the latter of course being provided as a means for permitting the acceleration of the engine at times when the same is subjected to heavy pull.
In order that the ports 18 and 20 of the valve 11 will be alined with their respective .ports formed in the casing 1, a horizontally disposed slot 21 is formed in one side of the casing, preferably in proximity of one of the ports 2 and receives therethrough a finger 22 carried on the valve 11. Hence, when the linger engages one end of the slot 21 the port 18 will be in alinement with its respective point, and when the {ina multiple way valve which may be readily attached to the free extremity of an exhaust manifold and when secured thereto will providemeans whereby the passage of the spent gases from the exhaust manifold may be directed in any one of a number of devices as attached to and communicating With the improved valve, in order that 'the same may properly perform their functions.
Although the device as herein described appears to be ]imited to its use in'connection with the exhaust manifold of an engine, I desire to have it understood that the valve may be used for various purposes, such as conditions or preference may dictate.
As hcreinbefore indicated, I do not Wish to be understood as coniiiiing the invention to the particular embodiments chosen for illustration herein, noi to the exact construction, arrangeinent and adaptation of the parts shown and described, but I reserve the right to make any changes and alterations that fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
In a device ofthe character described, an annular casing having a plurality of oppositely disposed ports formed in the side walls thereof and a concentrically disposed 'bearing opening formed in its bottom, apertured ears formed integrally with. the upper portion of the casing adjacent said oppositely disposed ports and the open top of said casing, an annular cover having apertured ears formed thereon corresponding to said first mentioned apertured ears over the open top of the casing and connected thereto by fastening devices passing throughv the alined apertured ears, a rotatable valve having a plurality of ways extending therethrough, one of said Ways passing diametrically through the valve, While the remaining ways are curved to establish communication, at times, between the relatively right angularly arranged ports in the casing, one por tion of the side wall of said casing having a slot formed therein, a pin carried by the valve received in said slot for limiting rotary movement of the valve, and a handle.
