Description

T; n. 000K.
CAR BRAKE. AEPUCATI'ON FlLED IUNE I3. ISIS.
,1,295,829.y Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
THOMAS D. COOK, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
CAR-BRAKE.
Application tiled .Tune 13. 1918.
lie it known that I, Titoims D. Cook, a citizen ot' the linited States. residing at Council lilutt's, in the county of Pottawattamie. and State ot` Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (lar-Brakes: and l do declare the following to be a tull, clear. and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to niakel andI use the' same.
This invention relates to car brakes. and it relates more` particularly to an improved lirake-shoe-hanger.
One ot the objects ot' this invention is Ito increase the degree of safe-ty and etticiency in devicesoi this kind;
Another object] is to provide a device ot this character which will be quickly and easily adjusted to conform to the tread of the car wheel;
Another object is to provide a device of this character which consists of t'cw and simple parts and may, therefore. be mamifactnred at a low cost;
Another object is to provide a device ot this character which is strong', durable. coinpact, convenientand thoroughly practical.
Other objects and advantages .may become appare-nt to persons who read the following details of description in connection with the accompanying' drawings, in which:
F igure 1 is an elevation of a car trnck having my improved brake-hanger applied thereto;
Fig'. 2 is an enlarged side elevation ot my improved Abrakedianger and its adjuncts;
Fig'. 3 is a view partly in vertical section and part-ly in side elevation;
Figi. 1 is a horizontal sectional view along the line of Fig'. Q; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view ot' a brakehead employed with this improved hanger.
Referring to these drawings in detail. in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views; the car truck Jframe A. axle ll). and wheels C. being' of ordinary construction. are not describen in detail. A pivotal element ii extends t'rom each side ot' the truck Jtrame. and on each otl these elements t3 is pivotally lnounted a bar or hanger T which is formed with lateral extensions h between which is inserted one cud ot' a lever Si. The extensions H and correspomline lever 9 are provided with apertures through which Specification of Letters Patent.
- pivotally Patented Feb; 25, 1919. 'seran No. 239.828.
a pivot l() extends. Each lever 9 may be connected 1n any appropriate. way to any appropriate operating means (not shown).` A'
The levers t). therefore. constitute means for i" by swinging` them the opposite hanger T is pivotally connected through the medium ot` a link l2 and pivots or bolts l.
()n each hanger T is pivotally connected a shoe-carrier or brake-head 11i which may be ot' ordinary construction as regards its con# nection with the shoe l5.A However. this ln'ake-he'ad is t'ormed with opposite. parallel flanges .to between which the adjacent hanger T extends. and cach brake-head 11 is secured to the corresponding hanger b v means ot' a holt or pivot 1T.
In order that each brake-head may swing freely upon these` pivots 1T, between predetermined limits. and in order to definitely determine such limits. I provide an adjustinel device t'or each brake-shoe. Cach ot' these limiting and adjustingdevices comprises a strap or yoke 1h which is apertured at its ends tor the reception ot rivets or bolts 19 b v means ot' which it is pivotally secu.A also beine centrally apertured. and these central apertures heine' screw-threaded vt'or the reception, oi the set-screws 2t). A lock nut 21 may be provided tor each otthe screws 20 so thatfthe said screws may be securely held in their adjusted positions. rThe inner end ot each set-screw 'ldnormally rests against the adjacent side ot' the hanger i" which supports it. and the contiguous brakeshead l-i is thereby held approximately in position to contorni to the peripherv ot' the wheel against which it exerts its braking etl'ect. Moreover. each 'volte' lh' together with its corresponding lirake-shoe t'orms an opening through which the corresponding' hanger T extends. and the size ot this openin;r is smaller than the cross section of the hanger at a point directly above the pivot 1T: and theretorinit the pivot or bolt iT Sllolild lieconle broken or dislocated. the .volte lH'would combine with the relatively large cross section through the extensions h so as to prevent the brake-shoe from fallin;r on the track. thus preventing' a probable wreck or derailment ol' the car.
l `roni the foregoing disclosure. il will llc to the luake-head: each yoke 1S.
seen that the hanger 7 effects/'the following useful functions, (1st), supporting the brake-head, (2nd), supporting the device 18 and cooperating therewith to adjust the brake-head, (3rd),l supporting the ends of the levels which actuate the brakes,4 and (4th). supporting the link l2 which connects the hangers i' and holds them in frictional contact with the portions of wheel treads adjacentto the wheel flanges.
Although I have described this embodiment of my invention very specifically, it. is not intended to limit this invention to these exactdetails of construction and arrangement of parts, but I am entitled to make minor changes without departure from the inventive idea 'disclosed in the foregoing description and following claims.
That I claim as my invention is:
1. In a car-brake, a depending hanger having a lateral extension, a brake-head pi\- oted on said hanger and adapted to Carry a brake-shoe. a Yoke extending" around said hanger and secured to said brake-head, and` an adjusting element cooperative with said volte for adJustmg said' brake-head with relation to said hangertsaid yoke also being cooperative with said lateral extension to suppolt said shoe in case of failure of the pivot that connects said brake-head to said hanger. i
`?.In la car-brake, a depending hanger having a lateral extension, a brake-head pivoted on said hanger and adapted to carry a brake-shoe, a yoke extending around said hanger and secured to said brake-head, an adjusting element cooperative with said -voke for adjusting said brake-head with relation to said hanger. and means pivotally connected to said lateral extension for actuatin'g said hanger so as to effect the braking function. said yoke being above said lateral extension and adapted to cooperate therewith for stopping the. brake-head in case of failure of its pivotal support.
In testimoniv whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
THOMAS D. COOK.
