ISIDOR J. KUSEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIC-NOJR. TO SVTRONG'HART CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION l01E' ILLINOIS.
COMPANY, or
, Y Y SMALL BANK.
To all/whom t may concern.' Y
. Be it known that I, IsmoR J. KUSEL, a citizeny of the United States, residing at .Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inl Small Banks, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to small banks for coins and other valuables and especially adapted'to be kept at home, instead of being carried around in the pocket. Prominent objects of the linvention are to provide a simple, practical and efficient construction of bank of this kind; to arrange for the easy reception ofthe coins and other valuables, but to prevent the improper withdrawal of the same; to arrange for the ready opening of the bank when desired so as to withdraw the contents; to make possible the opening of many banks by an authorized person such, for example, as an officer or employee of a banking institution, but to prevent the opening of any bank by unauthorized per-V sons; to simplify the construction and reduce the cost of manufacture; and to secure the foregoing and other desirable results' in a simple and expeditious manner.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a fragmentary view of a bank of the class specified embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same taken on line 2 2 in Fig. 1 on'a reduced scale;
Fig. 3 is a similar section taken on line 3 3-in Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4 inrFig. 2, parts of the devicel being omitted for convenience of illustration;
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line 5 5 in Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line '6 6 in Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings I show a bank'conveniently consisting of a base or body member 1 and atop 2,having a flange 3 which lits within the upper portion of .the body 1. This top 2 is capable of being bodily se arated from the bottom 1 in order to permltv the withdrawal. of the contents of the bank, but said top is normally locked in engagement with thebottom so as to prevent improper withdrawal vof the contents. The body or bottom llis provided with a com aperture 4, conveniently in the form of a horizontal slot, as'shown in-Fig. 1. The
cover 2 is preferably provided with adevice, by which the'coins ycan be received into the bank but :which will prevent their leavingk it. This trigger or tripping device consists of a tilting platform 6 pivotally mounted Aat 7 and having 'one end 8flocated near the coin aperture4, said end being provided with a sloping surface 9, which will ordinarily beV struck by the coin when inserted into the aperture4, so'that said platform u will be tilted to lower the end l8, whereby the coin may be slid over the top of the portion 9 and upon the top ofthe platform 6. The Weight of the coin thereupon tiltslthe platform 6 so ascto velevate the end 8 and therebyjcause or permit the` coinV to slide down from said platform into the interior,
of the bank. This platform device servesto close the aperture 4 from the inside, thereby preventing the escapeA ofthe coins. The pivot 7 for this platform 6 is conveniently mounted on the side depending walls 10 of a clip member 11 secured to the top 2, a convenient arrangement beingl to slip the corners of the clip 11 .into the groove at the edge of the cover and then to hold the same in position by means' of a tongue 12 struck from the body portion 13 of the cover. The clip 11 isA also provided with'a downwardly extending end portion 14 which serves to some extentl as a closure Yfor the space above the platform 6. Y f A -This same end of the bank body 1 is preferablyvprovided with an inwardlyV extending or punched portion 15 adapted to engagea similarly punched in portion 16 onjthe top 2, whereby this end of the bank may be locked by the engagement of said members.
The other end of the bank is provided with locking mechanism by whichthe body portion l and cover may be normallyheld in locking engagement. This mechanism comprises a pair of swinging-members 17 which are pivotallyv mountedso as to permit of their being swung in a vertical plane. They are located between the end Wall 18y ofv the bank anda plate 19 secured adjacent tolsaid end wall, preferably vby a tubular member 20 which has its ends anged over so as to make a firmengagement withboth the bank wall and the plate 19. yThishtubularv .member servesnot only-.to hold the plate 19in po sition but also serves as an aperture by means of which the interior of the bank may be seen, to ascertainlhown-full it is, and said aperture will also serve for the'admission of bills, if desired. The upper ends oflrthe: swinging members 17 are constructed with hooks22 .andthel cover 2 is providedwith lugs 23 forming shoulders which can benengaged by said books 22,'asshownin"Figs.2
and 3, said lugs 23 being conveniently formed by' punching the opening'i'nv a portion'of the rimS of saidtop '2,' as shown inFigs.` 1, 2 and` Thefswinging movement of said members 17 will cause the engagement and disengagement ofthe hooksf22V with the lugs 23, and/thereby cause the locking-and' unA thereby cause the same to separate from one v vention.
another' and thereby retract the i hooks 22 to move them, into unlocking position. For the accommodation' of thekey 25 'the portion 18.v ofthe banky wall and the plate 19 are provided'with apertures' 27 vand 28 're'- spectively, as shown' in Figs'. 4' and" 5. In order 'toi hold the swinging 'members 17 normally in locking 'p'osition a lspring is provided, the sameconveniently 'consisting of a single piece ofwire 29, Fig. 4 extended up around vthe'tubularmember 2() andhaving its lower ends4 bent `toform lateral engaging portions y30 which nass through aperta-ures inthe lower ends vof the legsla. This spring'tends normally to draw the legs 17a together and so hold thehooks 22 in an outward' or locking position. The key'25 spreads these legsyand operates'against said spring to Vunlockthe device.
All of the parts herein can' be stamped from' sheet metal,consequently-v the device can* be'madecheaply andv rapidly in great numbers.
' `Changes and modiiications may be made without. departing from the spiritof thein- What"I claimis': l Y
.1. A bankjvhavinglva locking mechanism eon's'isting'of' a' pair of ,swinging members lpivotallymounted jata commonpoint, the
