UNITED STATES WILLIAM JONES, OF NEW ALBANY, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATMOSPHERIC MOTIVE POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,567, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known 'that I, WM. JoNEs, of New Albany, iu the county of Floyd and in the State of Indiana, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Atmospheric Motive Power; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
l my device; and Fig. 2 is a bottom or outside view ot' the wheel with the wings removed.
A represents the chimney or stack, with the revolving elbow B on top. O is a furnace at the bottom of the stack, which may or may not be used as described in my patent above referred to. D D are pipes containing the wheels,
and leading into the main chimney or stack. The wheel may either be placed vertically or horizontally, both plans being shown in Fig. 1. E represents the shaft of the wheel, placed in suitable journal-boxes so as to revolve freely. Upon this plate is secured a circular plate, G, from which extends a series of radiating rods or round arms, a a, connected at their outer endsby a circular rim, H. Upon all or some of these rods are hinged wings I I, extending a suitable distance above and below the circular plate Gr, their lower ends extending inward into slots' on a plate, J. Any number of' wings may be used, as will be best suited for the diameter of the wheel, and by means of the plate J said wings may be placed at a right or left angle, tosuit a forward or backward movement. The wings are' moved simultaneously to regulate the speed or reverse the motion, at will. On top of the center plate G is a drum, K, the object of which is to reduce the airspace in the pipe or cylinder D, so that there may be a less quantity ot' air to relieve or exhaust. In addition to using this wheel for stationarypnrposes it maybe used on a propeller-shaft for the propelling of vessels.
In working my device as already patented I find that the current of air vpassing around the velbow B at the top of the stack reacts or causes an eddy and retards the draught. To obviate this di'iculty I insert in said elbow a tube, L, preferably funnel-shaped, which receives a current of air passing through it, and,
acting with the outside current, prevents the reaction and increases the draught, making the wheel more effective.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The chimney A with revolvin g elbow B having interior pipe L, the pipe or pipes D with the wheel' provided with shaft E, drum K, plate G, rods a a, rim H, hinged wings I I, and plate J, all the parts being constructed and arranged to opera-te substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of April, 1872.
WM. JONES.
