Description

C. W. ERFFIVEYEE` DOOR LOCK FLAYE. y APPLICATION min 1m41.191s.
Patented Feb. 25, mi@
CHESTER W. ERI'SE noon-Loon rits-Tn.
Applicationled January f1 To ali whom t may concern;
Be it known that'l, CHESTER W. Earr- Mnynn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lllilwaixkee, in the county of lvlilwaukee and State of liisconsin, have invented vcertain new ancl useful improvements in Door-Lock Plates, ot' which the following is a specification.
yThe present invention has to (lo with ini-r provements in strike plates and is characterized as to novelty by Athe provision for ready adjustment of said plate to-accommodate 'for sagging and shrinkage of floors so that the latch and bolt elements thereof will properly engage with the plates.
l am aware that it has been proposecl heretofore to provide devices of the above natnre which take care of sagging condi-A tion of floors through the instrumentality oi' a vertically adjustable latch engaging plate, but my object has been to combine with such an arrangement means `tor adjusting said plate in directions toward. or from the door casing so as to maintain the proper 4cooperation of the/latch ancl lock members portion of a door casing having my invention applied thereto;
F 2 is a pinrspect-ivev View showing the parts ot the device;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the plane inflicatecl by thc line 3 3 ot Fig. l;
Fig. l is a similar View on the line l-fl ol. Fig. l showing more clearly the lateral aiiljnsting' means for .the adjustable' plate; and
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional 'View on the line 5 5 of llig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, l designates the door casingwhich is suitably recessed to receive the strike plate which in this instance consists of the relatively stationary plate 2 and the adjustable plate 3. The rst mentioned plate is provided centrally thereof with a large rectangular opening 4l and adjacent to its eiuls with screw receiv- ER, DF MILYV'AUKEE, VYISCONSIN.

ing apertures 5 by means of which the plate .is fastened to the door casing as by means of the screws 6. This stationary plate inclutles'the strike Y which is lient at an angle adjacent. to its connection with the plate 2 for the purpose of guiding; the loc? latch upon the adjustable plate S in its afljustetl positions. The said plate 3 is slightly shorter than the stationary plate, is provided with the bolt and latch openings Sand elongated slot openings 97 the latter to receive attaching screws l0 which eXtencl through the openings 9 into tlireadetlopenings ll of the plate 2. By reason of the for-- mation of the slots Sk it Will he obvious that this plate 3 may he adjusted in a ifertical plane so as to the openings 8 in proper position to receive the lock bolt and latch members Whenever the Cloer' sags and these members get out o alinement with the openings 8. in aclclitio'n to this vertical acljustment, the plate 3 has lateral adjustment with respect to the door casing; or adjustment toward and from the stationary plate 2. To obtain said adjustment l proviele a series of threaded studs l2, two at each enel ot the stationary plate. The heals oi these screws under normal conflitn." lie flush with the-,stationary plate 2. n ier condition the plate 3 is in conta t with t.-e 'stationary plate hut where the erige of the door, from shrinkage of the wootl or from improper fitting, is so tar spaced trom tace of the floor case that the lock holte anti.
latch will not properly engage the lock plate, the cooperation of the parts is ein tained hy adjusting the plete 3 outwardly from its stationary mein'lier. To accomplish this the screws lil are unscrewe from the plate 2 so as to'project from its face anti. the adjusting; plate 3., previously olisplaced to accomplish this' adjustment, is again positioned by the screws l0 against the heads otl the screws l2. l
lll hen desired the screws l2 may he acl justetl varialoly so to give the an inclination. From the 'foregoing it will he obvious that a dual ajustinent ol the ole vice is providel :tor which. will take are of the abnormal conditions to which (leors are sulijecteilL hy reason ot' and shrinkage.
Having' thus clescrihecl my invention7 'what l claim as new is:A
1. A strike plate comprising' a relatively stationary member and an adjustable plate,
adjustable spacing means arranged between the two plates, and movable inwardly or outwardly to project more or less into the space between thesaid plates, and means for securing one of' the plates to the other and adjustable to accommodate the adjustment of the spacing means.
2. A strike plate comprising a relatively stationary member and an adjustable plate, means mounted on one of said plates to project therefrom intermediate the two to regulatethe distance between the two parts, and separate means for connecting the parts together and rigidly holding` the adjustable plate against the intern'iediate means.
3. A strike plate comprising a relatively stationary member and an adjustable plate having openings therein, means extending through the openings and connecting with the stationary member, said adjustable plate being adjustable uvertically upon adjustment of the eonneetinzg` means aforesaid, and adlessees justable spacing means mounted on the st( tionary plate and movable inwardly and outwardly thereofl between the adjustable plate and the stationary member for regulating the adjustment of one of said parts with respect to the other.
4f. A two-part door lock plate comprising a relatively stationary strike plate and an adjustable plate, havingfrslot openino's therein, connecting; n'xembers extending through said openings and connecting the adjustable plate to the stationary plate, and providing for vertical adjustment of said adjustable plate, and a plurality of threaded members mounted in the stationary plate for adjustment to project more or 'less from the face of said plate and against which the adjustable plate is reeeived.
In testimonj7 whereof l alix my signature.
CHESTER lW. ERFFMEYER.
