GIGAR-BOX-LID HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 19121.
Application filed April 8, 1918. Serial No; 227,166.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Osoan CAnnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Cigar- Box-Lid Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and highly eiiicient box lid holder. especially adapted for use in bold ing the lids of cigar boxes open in showcases for the purpose of exhibiting the cigars packed therein.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a cigar box having its lid held in an open position by the improved box lid holder;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the parts, as shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improved box lid holder removed from the cigar box.
The numeral 1 indicates the body of a cigar box and the numeral 5 indicates the hinged lid thereof. The improved box lid holder is stamped from a single sheet of spring metal and comprises a body member 6, having at one end a relatively short leg 7 and a relatively long leg 8, and having at its other end a relatively short spring arm 9 and a relatively long spring arm 10. The legs 7 and 8 are edgewise spaced to straddle one of the ends of the box body #1, the latter of which is provided with an inwardly and downwardly projecting point 12. A curved notch 13 is formed in the inner edge of the leg 8, at the junction of its point 12. This notch 13 permits the respective box end to enter between the inner edge of the leg 7 and the point 12 when the holder is held obliouely inward and parallel to the hinge connecting the box lid 5 to the. body 4. A straightening movement of the holder will cause the point 12 to bite into the outer face of the respective box end and interlock the legs 7 and S therewith in a straddled position, with freedom for bodily sidewise swinging movement toward or from the lid On the ends of the arms 9 and 10 are edgewise spaced fingers 14 and 15, respectively, which extend transversely of said arms. The end of the finger 15 terminates short of the adjacent edge of the arm 10 and the end of the finger 15 is extended toward the finger 1 1 to afford a lid engaging surface 16. The distance between the outer edge of the finger 14 and the surface 16 of the finger 15 is just a little greater than the thickness of the box lid to permit said box lid to enter therebetween. The arm 9, at the junction of its finger 14. is curved edgewise outward, beyond the end of the finger 15, to afford a lid engaging-shoulder 17. The body 6 of the holder is expanded at 18 to afford space on which a price mark 19, or other information, may be stamped or otherwise marked.
In securing the lid 5 in an open position by means of the improved box lid holder. the legs 7 and 8 are interlocked with one of the ends of the box body in a manner previously described. The holder is then tipped backward to carry the end of the finger 15 past the adjacent edge of the lid 5 and the shoulder 17 into engagement with the inner face of said lid. it-h the holder in this position, the arm 10 is sprung laterally, with respect to the arm 9, outward of the outer face of the lid, and then by moving said holder bodily edgewise. the fingers 14: and 15 are carried into yielding frictional engagement with opposite faces of the lid and securely hold the same when set.
By offsetting the arm 10, edgewise from the end of the finger 14, said finger is permitted to be moved completely onto the lid and, owing to its length, securely positions the holder against transverse twisting movement. The single point of contact 16 of the finger 15, with the lid, at an intermediate position, with respect to the length of the finger 1-1, does not in any way tend to transversely twist the holder against the action of the finger 14.
The above described invention, while extremely simple and at small cost to manufacture, has been found, in actual usage, to be highly efiicient for the purpose had in view. The holder can be very quickly applied to a box body and lid or removed therefrom, and at the same time, securely holds the lid at the desired angle and wherever set.
In the body of the holder is formed an aperture 20, with a contracted end, provided for use as a nail uller.
What I claim 1. A box lid holder comprising a body member having one of its ends adapted to be secured to one end of a box, and having at its other end a relatively short spring arm and a relatively lon spring arm, said two arms having inwar ly extended edgewise spaced fingers, the end of the finger of the short arm terminating short of the adjacent edge of the long arm and the end of the finger of the long arm extending toward the finger of said short arm to afiord a single contact point. said two fingers adapted to be interlocked with the box lid by an edgewise movement of the holder and a lateral separation of said fingers.
A box lid holder comprising a body member having one of its ends adapted to be secured to one end of a box, and having at its other end a relatively short spring arm and a relatively long spring arm, said two arms having inwardly extended edgewise spaced lingers, said short arm having, at the junc tion with its finger, a shoulder projecting outward of the end of the finger of the long arm, said shoulder adapted to engage the inner face of the box lid as a base of resistance to permit the other of said fingers to be sprung laterally, whereby said two fingers may be interlocked with the box lid by an edgewise movement of the holder.
3. A box lid holder comprising a body member having one of its ends adapted to be secured to the lid of a box, and having at its other end a relatively short leg and a relatively long leg, said short and long legs adapted to straddle one end of the box, and the latter of which is provided with an in.- wardly extended point, said long le also having, at its inner edge, at the j auction of the point thereof, a notch which permits said legs to straddle the respective box end when the holder is held in an oblique position, parallel to the hinge of the box lid.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR CARLSON.
