Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
Application filed November 10, 1917. Serial No. 201,275.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS C. JOHNSON and FRANK F. BURTON, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at New Haven and East Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Loading Box-Magazines; and
we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a view in front elevation of our improved devicerfor loading box-magazines.
Fig. 2 a view thereof in side elevation with the body part of a paper carton filled with cartridges shown as held in the hand preparatory to feeding a column of cartridges from it directly into the device.
Fig. 3 a view of the device in horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 an enlarged view in horizontal section on the line H of Fig. 2, showing the chambered upright and the cartridge-guide.
Fig. 5 a view of the device in vertical section, showing the pivotal loading-head engaged with the uppermost cartridge of a column of fed cartridges preparatory to charging the same into a box-magazine.
Fig. 6 a corresponding view showing the cartridges after they have been charged into the box-magazine.
Fig. 7 a detached plan view of the pivotal loading-head and the plunger to which it is pivoted. V
Fig. 8 a detached plan view of the plunger.
Our invention relates to an improved device for loading cartridges into boX-1nagazines for subsequent introduction, as loaded magazines, into machine guns or shoulder arms, the object being to provide a simple, durable, reliable and rapidly operated portable device of the character described, the said device being particularly adapted to loading tapering cartridges directly from paper cartons, though not so limited, since it is also available for loading cartridges fed by hand into the device.
..With these ends in view, our invention consists in a cartridgedoading device having a frame provided with a cartridgeguideway, a cartridge-loading instrumentalityco-acting with the said guideway, and box-magazine positioning and supporting means located. at the delivery end of the said guideway.-
Our invention further consists in a cartridge-loading device having a pivotal loading instrumentality, and certain other details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out our invention, as herein shown, we employ a leaf-like pivotal car tridge-loading instrumentality or head 5 having at its lower end a straight loadingface 6, substantially as long as the body-portion of a tapering cartridge 7; At its upper endv the said head is provided with a handle 8 located substantially above an operatingpin 9 extending transversely through the lower portion of the head so as to pro ect on reciprocation in the chamber 14 of a tubular upright 15 the lower end of which is secured to a base-plate or pedestal 16 by screws 17 only one of which is shown, the
upper end of the upright being closed by a cap 18 secured to it by screws 19, only one of which is shown. The front of the upright is formed with a flattened face 20centrally intersected by a vertical slot 21 enough.
wider than the head 5 to permit the same, and the arm 10 thereof, to move up and down in it, the plunger 12 being held against rotation, and the head against lateral displacement, by the engagement of the sides of the arm 10 with the walls of the said slot. Two parallel flange-like cartridge-guides 22 ap lied to the u right, have corresponding inc ined outer e ges 28 for coaction with the respective ends of the operating-pin 9, the sai guides being furnished with fastening-flanges 2e receiving screws 25 by which the guides are secured in place on the opposite sides of the lower end of the slot 11.
clination. The cartridges occupy these in-' clined positions because their body portions are slightly tapering rather than cylindrical. V
Forthis reason they are loaded in the manner described to prevent them from cooking or tilting as they enter the magazine. On releasing the downward pressure upon the handle 8, the plunger spring 40 asserts itself tolift the loading-head 5 to the top of the upright 15 as shown in Fig. 1, for loading another box-magazine. The remaining column of cartridges in the carton will now be loaded in the same manner into the same magazine, or into another magazine, as the case may be, supposing each carton to have two columns of cartridges, which is the usual practice.
W e claim 1. In a device for loading box-magazines for firearms, the combination with a frame having a cartridge-guideway, of a cartridgeloading instrumentality adapted to traverse the said guidewayand arranged so that the inclination of its loading-face will be progressively changed to compensate for the gradual changing of the inclination of the column of cartridges in the guideway, due to the taper of the cartridges, and means for positioning and supporting a box-magazine at the cartridge delivery end of the said guideway.
2. In a device for loading box-magazines for firearms, the combination with a pivotal cartridge-loading instrumentality, of means for progressively swinging the said instrumentality during the loading of the cartridges into a box-magazine, whereby their change in inclination or pitch due to their taper, is compensated for.
3. In a device for loading box-magazines for firearms, the combination with means for positioning and supporting a box-magazine, of cartridge-guides located above the said means, a pivotal cartridge-loading head coacting with the said guides and having a loading-face, and means for swinging the said head upon its pivot so as to progressively change the inclination of its loadingface to insure the introduction of the successive cartridges into the mouth of the boxmagazine at the same angle.
4. In a device for loading tapering cartridges into box-magazines for firearms, the combination witha pivotal loadinghead, of means for progressively swinging the said head during the loading of the car-' tridges into a box-magazine, whereby their change in inclination or pitch due to their taper, is compensated for.
5. In adevice for loading cartridges into boxmagazines directly from cartons, the combination with a. pivotal loading-head having a loading-face, of cartridge-guides having their edges inclined to co-act with the said head to rock the same on its pivot as it descends for" insuring the entrance of the successive cartridges of the column into 80 the mouth of a box-magazine at the same angle.
6. In a device for loading box-magazines for firearms, the combination with a chambered upright having its front face flattened and slotted, of a spring-actuated plunger located in the said upright, a cartridge loading-head pivoted to the said plunger and traveling up and down in the said slot, magazine-supporting means, cartridgegui-des carried by the said upright and interposed between the said head and the said magazine-supporting means, and means for rocking the said head upon its pivot so as to cause the successive cartridges to enter the mouth of the magazine at the same inclination.
7. In a device for loading box-magazines for firearms, the combination with a chambered upright, of a base therefor, a lower box-magazine support upstanding from the said "base, a loop-like upper magazine-support applied to the upright at a point directly above the said lower support, a spring-actuated plunger located in the chamber of the said upright, a loading-head pivotally connected with the upper end of the plunger, and cartridge-guides carried by the said upright and adapted to receive 110 the said head which descends between them and to rock the same upon its pivot during its descent.
8. In a device for loading box-magazines for firearms from cartons, the combination 115 with a pivotal loading-head having a load ing-face, provided with an operating-handle and carrying an operating-pin located sub stantially below the said handle, of cartridge-guides having their edges inclined 120 for cooperation with the said pin for rocking the said head during its descent between the said guides, and means for positioning and supporting a box-magazine below the said guides during the loading operation.
9. In a device for loading box-magazines for firearms, the combination with means for forcing a column of cartridges into the mouth of a box-magazine, of a loop-like magazine support cut away on one side, 130
