To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT ISLIKER, engineer, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Geneva, Canton of Geneva, in the Confederation of Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Connecting-Rods for Piston Engines or Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the lubrication of connecting-rod heads and crank pins of piston engines or other machines.
In carrying out my invention the bushing in the head of the rod is provided on both sides of the middle transverse plane with collecting devices for the lubricant after having served its purpose, said devices being in communication with other devices wherefrom the lubricant is discharged in a predetermined direction and in a predetermined position because of the forces imparted to it by the movement of the head.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the connectingrod 00 is part of an internal combustion engine having one or more cylinders. In this structure the crank pit g incloses the tight chambers b which constitute the pump chambers where the explosive mixture for driving the-engine is compressed by the corresponding piston which is connected by the rod :10 to one of the crank-pins e of the crank-shaft e. The explosive mixture is admitted to a chamber 7) throughits port 9. Now under these circumstances if the head of the connecting-rod m is suificiently lubricated, the oil after having accomplished its lubrication will work to the outside of this head m and will be thrown in all directions, owing to the moving crank-pin 6 if nothing Specification of Letters Patent.

is provided to prevent such action. The oil will therefore be thrown toward port 9 and when the compressed explosive mixture is conveyed through the port 9 tothe cylinder it will carry with it a certain quantity of the oil.
To prevent this oil waste, a bushing m is placed in the revolving head of connectingrod 0: and is provided near each of its extremities with an inner annular groove 00 00 The groove m is shown as located, in a plane at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the bushing, and the groove w in a plane at an inclination thereto. In the latter case there is less risk of marking the crank-pin, owing to the wear at the same place. Each of these grooves communicates through an orifice with a radially set pipe m which is fixed at an acute angle to the axis of the connecting rod w and terminates on the outside of the head 00 in the under part of which said pipe 02 is secured.
The operation of this form of the invention may be explained by reference to Fig. 3, which is a section taken vertically on the axis of the crank pin 6 and passing through the groove w the dimensions of groove and oil being greatly exaggerated.
The oil is supplied to the head 09 of the connecting-rod m in any suitable manner and after having lubricated the same, is collected in the grooves 00 m Owing to the movement of the head :0 the oil in the grooves is acted upon by two forces. The one, a centrifugal force causes the oil in the grooves m and x during the revolution of shaft 2, to always take a position which is opposite that of shaft 0 with regard to the axis of the crank-pin 6 This is shown in Fig. 3 for the four positions I, II, III, IV of the crankpin.
The second force is inertia which acts materially in extreme positions of the piston, that is in the positions I and III of the crank-pin in Fig. 3. As the crank-pin approaches these two positions, Iand III, its movement is retarded both upwards and downwards, until it ceases to move in a vertical direction, and then starts again downward or upward with a marked throw which the oil owing to the inertia can not follow at once. From the action of these two forces and from the position in which the pipe {.86 is fixed, it will follow that the oil can escape from the grooves m :2 only in the position III of the head, that is in a pie determined direction and position so that the oil can not get near the orificeof port 9 Thus the quantity of oil carried along by the explosive mixture is so very small as to be negligible. At the time the oil escapes the gases in the crank case Will be nearly at rest,
