Application filed May 11, 1918. Serial No. 233,946.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK F. TAYLOR, a
citizen of the United States, and a, resident of Belen, in the county of Valencia and State of New Mexico, have invented a new and Improved WVheeLRim, of which the following is a full,'clear, and exact description. The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved, wheel rim more especially designed for use on wheels of automobiles, uto-trucks and similar power driven vehicles, and arranged to permit the operator to quickly collapse therim for placing a tire in position on the rim or removing it therefrom whenever it is desired to do so.
In order to accomplish the desired result, the rim is made ina main section and an opening and closing section hinged at one end to one end of the said main section and adapted to swing inward into open position to collapse the rim, the free end of said opening and closing section and the other end of the said main section having interlocking members forming a selflocking joint to hold the opening and closing section in self-locking position on the main section.

which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The wheel rim of usual cross section comprises a main section 10 and an opening and closing section 11 connected at one end by a hinge 12 with one end 13 of the main section 10 to permit of swinging the opening and closing section inwardly into open position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 8. The free end of the opening and closing sectionll is pivotally connected at 14 with a link 15 pivotally connected with a plate 16 slldably held on the inner face of the other end por- I tion 17 of the main rim section 10 a distance from the terminal of said end portion 17, as plainly shown in the draw'ng. the arrangement described the plate 16 is free to slide lengthwise on the end 17 of the rim section 10.
The free end 20 of the opening and closing section 11 is approximately V-shaped and v is adapted to be seated in a recess 21 formed to I on the end 17 of the main rim section 10 to form a self-locking joint with a view to hold the opening and closing rim section 11 locked when in closed position. The opening and closing section 11 is provided at one side with a handle 25 which projects beyond the free end 20 of the' opening and closing section 11, and the handle 25' is adapted to be engaged by the operator to swing the opening and closing section inward from the closed position shown in Fig. 1, into the open position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 or vice 'versa. It is understood that the V-shaped or double beveled end 20 of the opening and closing section 11 is adapted to readily snap into position in the seat 21 on pressing the handle 25 outward and causing the opening and closing member 11.to swing from the open position into the closed position. In a like manner when the operator exerts a pull on the handle 25 in an inward direction then the free end 20 snaps out .of the seat 25 and the link 15 and the opening and closing section 11 now exert a pull on the ends 13 and 17 of the main rim section 10 to draw said ends 13 and 17 toward each other thus reducing the diameter of the main rim section 10 to permit of conveniently placing a tire in position on the rim or removing it therefrom. After the tire has been placed in position on the rim, the operator takes hold of the handle 25 and swings the same outward thus moving the opening and closing section 11 into closed position, as shown in Fig. 1'. The tire when inflated causes the ends 13 and 17 to move toward each other so that the opening and closing section 11 is firmly locked in place,
it being understood that the link 15 on account of being connected with the slidable plate 16 permits such movement. Likewise when the tire is deflated the plate 16 is free to slide outward on the free end 17 during the opening movement of the opening and closing section 11.
The wheel rim shown and described is very simple and durableinconstruction and permits an operator to conveniently place a tire in position on the rim or to remove it therefrom whenever it is desired to do so.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A wheel rim, comprising a main section and an opening and closing section hinged at one end to one end of the said main section and having its free end pivotally and slidably connected with the other endof the main section, said opening and closing section being adapted to swing inward into open position, the free end of the said opening and closing section and the other end of the said main section having interlocking members forming a self-locking jointto hold the opening andclosing section in selflocking position.
2. A wheel rim, comprising a main section, an opening and closing section hinged at one end to one end of the said main section, a link having one end pivotally con.-
nected withthe free end of the said opening menace the said other end of the main section having a V-shaped recess forming a seat for the said free end of the opening and closing section, and a handle on the said opening and closing section.
4. A wheel rim, comprising a main section, an opening and closing section hinged atone end to one end of the said main section, a, link pivotally connecting the free end of the said opening and closing section with the other end of the said main section, the free end of the said opening and closing section being approximately V -shaped and the said other end of the main section having a V-shaped recess forming a seat for the said free end of the opening and closing section, and a handle on the said opening and closing section, and extending lengthwise thereof, the said handle projecting beyond the free end of the said opening and closing member.
5. A wheel rim, comprising a main sec tion, an opening and closing section hinged at one end to one end of the said main section, the free end of the said opening and closing member being adapted to be seated in a seat on the other end of the said main section to form a locking joint, a link pivotaliy connected with the free end of the said opening and closing section, and a conneeting member slidahle on the said seat end of the main section and pivotally connected with the said link.
