Description
W. B McCULLY. CIGAR AND CIGARETTE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 24.1916- Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
m gawa UNITED STATE PATENT @FFEQE.
WILLIAM B. MQCULLY, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CIGAR AND CIGARETTE HOLDER.
Application filed November 24, 1916.
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, lVILLrAM B. Mo- CULLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar and Cigarette Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a cigar and cigarette holder, and more particularly to the class of portable combination holders for smokers use.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a combination device of this character wherein a match box can he held therein for free access to the matches contained thereby and which will serve as a paper weight when resting upon a desk or other support while cigars or cigarettes can be also held in convenient position to a smoker and the ashes therefrom trapped or caught to avoid falling upon the desk or other support while the device is in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form to hold a match box, cigar or cigarette and ashes therefrom and is also readily portable.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in its construction, reliable and efficient in its purpose, neat and attractive in appearance and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a holder constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawing, the device comprises a substantially semi-spherical shaped base 10 which is suitably weighted, and has rising Specification of Letters Patent.

centrally therefrom a vertical post 6. A cross-bar 7 is carried by the upper end of the post and is longitudinally perpendicular therewith but laterally inclined therefrom while supporting cigar and cigarette rests 8 and 9 respectively are carried transversely of the upper surface of the bar and disposed at an angle to the post and are connected to gether to form a unit each of which is of channeled formation. The rest 9 is of a slightly less length than the rest 8 which has a channel of greater width and depth than said rest 9 so that the rest 8 is adaptable for supporting a cigar while the rest 9 is for supporting a cigarette, the ends of the rests 8 and 9 being rounded as at 10. Carried by the undersurface and near the upper ends of the rests and transversely thereof is an ash trough 11 which is of substantially semi-cylindrical shape. The upper ends of these rests protrude slightly within the trough so that when a cigar or cigarette is placed within the rest the burnt end thereof will overhang the trough so that ashes falling therefrom will drop within the same to avoid the scattering of the ashes or the falling thereof without the trough when the cigar or cigarette is at rest within the holder.
In the use of the construction of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, when a cigarette or cigar is left on one of the rests it will burn until it reaches the upper edge of the rest. It is to be noted that the paper forming a part of the cigarette will stick slightly to the rest so that accidental sliding of the cigarette from the rest is prevented. It is further to be observed that this construction is very convenient to the smoker in that it is only necessary to lift the cigarette from the rest and this action causes the cigarette ashes to be deposited in the trough, positioned immediately beneath the upper end of the rest, since the lighted end which has become partially stuck to the rest will assure of the ashes being deposited when the cigarette is pulled from the rest. Of course, if the cigarette is left rather a long time it will go out, but if left only a short time it will remain lighted.
Mount-ed upon the base 10 at one side of the rests 8 and 9 is a match box clip or holder 12 in which is adapted to be placed the match box to permit convenient access to the matches contained therein.
The bottom face of the base 10 carries a felt covering 13 to prevent the scratching or inarring of the desk or support when the device is at rest thereon and this device by reason of the weighted base 10 thereof, will serve as a paper weightin addition to the other purposes therefor.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the acooin imnying drawing the construction and manner of use of the herein described holder will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the character described, a vertically arranged post, a crossbar carried by the upper end of the post and l0ngitudinally perpendicular therewith but later ally inclined theretron'i a plurality of variable sized rests carried transversely of the upper surface of the cross-bar and disposed at an inclination to the post, and a trough carried by the under-surfaces and near the upper ends of the rests and transversely thereof and having the ends of the rests protruded therein.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
