Description

F. H. BATEMAN. ADJUSTABLE MOUNTING FOR FLOWS,
APPLICATION FILED OCT- 7. I918.
Patentd Feb.'18,1919.
FREDERIC H. BATEMAN, 0F GRENLOCH, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO BATEMAN MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF GRENLOCH, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
ADJUSTABLE MOUNTING FOR FLOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnonnro H. BATE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Grenloch, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Adjustable Mountings for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to plows, and particularly to the method in which the plowshare is mounted upon the frame, the object of my invention being to so construct the mounting that the plow-share may be adjusted in respect to the frame so as to cause it to point downwardly and serve as a dig ging plow or to point forwardly and serve as a covering plOW.
This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a plow-share with mounting constructed in accordance with my invention, the plow-share being adjusted to serve as a digging plow;
Fig. 2 is a similar View with the plowshare so adjusted as to serve as a covering plow;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the mounting in the position shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4: is a view similar to Fig. 3 but with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawing, the frame 1 of the plow is shown as provided with a slotted transverse bearing member '2 through which passes a retaining bolt 3. This bolt also passes through a slotted head 4- on the plow standard 5 and is provided with a head 3 whose upper convex face cooperates with the concave lower face 4* of the head 4. This construction enables the bolt 3 to always exert a vertical pull upon the head 4: irrespective of the angular position occupied by said head in respect to the bearing member 2 of the frame.
Depending from the head 4 is the plow standard 5, to the lower end of which is secured the curved plowshare 6. The position of the plowshare is controlled by the relation of the head 4 with respect to hearing member 2 and in order to provide different relative positions between the same, the upper face of said head has formed on it a pair of forwardly facing shoulders 4 and 4 and a pair of rearwardly facing shoulders 43 and 4. When it is desired to have the plow-share serve as a digging plow, it is adjusted as shown in Fig.1, pointing downwardly. When adjusted to this position the shoulder 1 of the head a engages the forward wall of the slot in the bearing member 2 and the shoulder 1 engages the rear wall of the same, as shown in Fig. 3, and tightening of the nut on the bolt 3 holds the parts rigidly in engagement. When it is desired to have the lowshare serve as a covering plow it is adjusted as shown in Fig. '2, pointing ahead. In this case. the shoulder a engages the front wall of the slot in the bearing member '2, and the shoulder 4 engages the rear wall of the same. As will be seen. the required adjustment may be easily and quickly effected and the parts, when adjusted. are securely retained in their proper positions.
Although I have shown and described my invention in connection with plows, for which use it was devised and to which it is particularly adapted. I do not limit myself to this use, as the same type of connection may be used in connection with other ground-working tools, such as spike-teeth. cultivator blades. etc., in case it should be desired to use such tools in different angular positions. The claims will, therefore, be read with this understanding.
I claim:
1. The combination. in an agricultural implement. of a slotted bearing member, a securing head, a plow carried by said head, a nair of forwardly facing shoulders and a pair of rearwardly facing shoulders on said head. and means for retaining the head in either of two positions, in one of which positions one shoulder of one pair is in engagement with the front wall of the slot in the bearing member and one shoulder of the other pair is in engagement with the rear wall of said slot, and in the other of which positions the other shoulder of each pair is in such engaging relation.
2. The cOmbination. in an agricultural implement. of slotted bearing member. a slotted securing head, a plow carried by said head, and a retaining bolt passing through the slots in said head and bearing member, and serving to secure the same togethei' said bolt having a head with convex of the angular adjustment existing between upper face, and said securing head having said securing head and said frame.
a concave lower face adapted to be engaged In testimony whereof, I have signed my by the convex-faced head on said bolt Wherename to this specification.
by a straight pull is always exercised upon said securing head by said bolt irrespective FREDERIO H. BATEMAN.
