To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO THIEME, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri. have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Carriage-iteturn Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to male and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part parts shown in Fig. 5.

In the parent case, I have disclosed means for tabulating the tally roll frame 503, and this present application is directed particularly to means for returning the telly roll frame to its home or starting position.
In United States Patent No. 1,120,862, granted December 15, 191.4, upon an application for improvements in carriage return mechanism filed by me, I ha e shown a construction for returning the typewriter carriage from a constantly rotating motor shaft, this carriage return mechanism being rendered effective by the depression of whatis known as a carriage return key. In the drawings, (see Figs. 5 and 6), 535 is a constantly running shaft driven from the motor drive of the machine, the upper end of which shaft is flattened, as shown in Fig. 6,

This flexible bearing 540 is held in posi ion by a leaf spring 541, the hearing being inserted through suitable lateral openings in the framing of the machino so as to enable the upper end of the .mounted on the shaft 502 supported by the casing; of the machine This casing is re movable and when the parts are assembled, in? the teeth on gear 5&2 do not mesh exactly with the rack teeth 543, then the shaft 540 may yield slightly until, by a relative movement between the teeth, they are brought into proper mesh with each other; likewise,
the escapement bar 521 and the lower end of frame 503 may yield outwardly slightly for the same purpose. Thus, in assembling the parts, if the teeth of the rack 521 do not properly mesh with the teeth of gear or v are cocked, either the gear or the rack will yield until, by a relative movement of the parts, the teeth are brought into proper mesh with each other. S0, likewise, in vibrating the platen, the teeth. of rack 521 are nroved away from the gea1',5-l2 so as to be practically out, of mesh therewith to preyent any lateral movement of the platen lower portion which permits a rocking" movement of the shaft, the upper end of said shaft finding bearing in the yielding block 540. The opening in the bracket above the knife edge bearing is made slightly larger than the shaft 539 to permit this movement. A set screw 5-10 is employed at the back of the yielding block 510 which set screw, in conjum'tion. with the jam nut mounted thereon, enables the upper end of shaft 53!) and the gear wheel 54-2 to be adjusted toward and from the teeth on the escapemeut bar 521. y The clutch bearing member 535 has an annular groove at its lower end, in which are received the members of a plate 544-, which plate held upwardly by means of a spring A post 5-H) mounted in a vertical bearing in the fixed framebracket has its upper end located under a pin 54-? arried by a rock arm. 548 pivotally connected to the track plate 520 which is fixedly secured to the rear wall of the casing 500.
'lhe escapcment bar 521 has a cam face. 521 at one end thereof which is designed to engage. the pin 54? and depress the plate 544 and 'the clutch carrying member engaged thereby when the tally-roll carriage moves, or'is moved, by the carriage retu *a mechanism to its extreme rightd'iand position, This cam face 521, however, is so located with respect to the first notch and shoulder (521 and 521") of the escapeinent bar that the momentum of the (a 'riage is relied upon to arise the cam face 521" to depress tl a pin 517, to disengage the clutch members, whereupon the spring 525, connected to the tally-rollcarriage asserts itself and causes the tally-roll carriage to move leftwardly, to a slight extent, until the cam face 521 has. disengaged from the pin 54:7 and the shoulder 521 is brought into engagement with the spring element 527 of the escapement pawl for the tally-roll carriage, as fully set forth in the parent case.
hen the plate 51% has thus been temporarily depressed by the rocking of the arm 518, as above described, (and the tallyroll carriage is at its starting position at the right.) the clutch members are held separated by means of a lever 549 (see Figs. 3 and 5) which lever is pivotally mounted on a frame portion of the machine and has a shoulder on its lower end to engage over and hold the plate 511 depressed. The engaging position of the lever with respect to the plate 514 is ett'ecteddiy means of a spring 5507 The upper end of lever 54:9 lies immediately to the rear of the sliding bar 551 having guiding slots formed therein, whereby the same may be supported by the framing of the machine and guided in its movenicnt-scre\vs being employed to pass through the slots to hold and guide the bar 551 (see Fig. The forward end of bar 551 carries a tappet 552, which tappet is provided with an inclined or cam face at its forward edge, said tappet 552 being so constructed that as the typewriter carriage with its bar 39 travels leftwardly, it will not operate the bar 551. It is only when the typewriter carriage travels to ward the right that the bar 551 is operated.
The notched bar 2-35), which is carried by and movable with the paper carriage of the typewriting machine, is provided with an adjustable block having a cam face projection 5541 (see Fig 3 and 1) which, in the movement of the typewriter carriage, is designed at the proper moment to operate the bar 551, releasing the plate 514, and permit upward n'iovement thereof to effect an engagement between the clutch members of the carriage return mechanism. lVhen the carriage reaches its extreme position at the right, the canrface 521 will depress the pin 517 andwith it, the plate 514, and disengage the clutch members. This position of the tally-roll tarriage is abnormal, and when the clutch members are disengaged, the spring 526 will move the carriage leftwardly a short distance until the, escapemeat pawl is engaged by a shoulder 521 in which position of the tally-roll carriage, the cam face 521 is disengaged from the pin 547. The return mechanism for the tally-roll carriage, is rendered effective by the position of the typewriter carriage and the adjustable block 553 thereon, the clutch members of said return mechanism being disengaged by the cam face 521. This carriage return mechanism" for theFtaHy-roll carrii-igc is separate and distinct from the carriage return mechanism for the type writer carriage, which latter may be of the construction shown in United States Patent No. 1,120,862, granted to me December 15, 1914, though it derives motion forits constantly driven shaft 535 from the same source of power, to wit, the motor drive for the calculating machine; the constantly driven shaft 535 (see Figs. 1 and 2) has a miter gear 557 at its lower end which meshes with a companion gear 556 on shaft 557 whose forward end is driven by the gears 558 which are in turn-driven from the motor.
What I claim is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a tally roll carriage, tabulating mechanism cooperating therewith, and a carriage return mechanism which is automatically rendered effective to eturn said carriage to its home position after the final operation of said tabulating mechanism.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a tally roll carriage tabulating mechanism cooperating therewith, carriage return mechanism operable from a constantly rotating shaft, and means for entraining said shaft with said carriage to return the latter after final tabulating operation is effected.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a laterally movable paper carriage, a tally-roll carriage, tabulating mechanism for said tally-roll carriage, carriage return mechanism for said tally-roll carriage, and means operated by said first mentioned paper carriage for rendering said tally-roll carriage return mechanism eflective.
4. In an apparatus'of the character described, the combination of a laterally movable paper carriage, a tally-roll carriage, tabulating mechanism for said tally-roll carriage, carriage return mechanism for said tally-roll carriage, and plural means for rendering said carriage return mechanism effective and ineffective, one of said means being operable by the laterally movable paper carriage and the other by the tally-roll carriage.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a laterally movable paper carriage, an adjustable stop carried thereby, a tally-roll carriage, tabulating mechanism for said tally-roll carriage,
carriage return mechanism for said tallyroll carriage, and plural means for rendering said carriage return mechanism effective and ineffective, one of said means being operated by the laterally movable paper carriage and the other by the tally-roll carriage, said first mentioned means being operated by the adjustable stop on the first mentioned carriage.
6, In an apparatus of the character de scribed, the combination of a paper carriage, a yielding rack carried thereby, a pinion engaging said rack, a yielding bearing for said pinion, and means for rotating said pinion at predetermined positions of the carriage.
7. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a tally-roll carriage, carriage return mechanism cooperating therewith, a separately operable paper carriage, means thereon for rendering said tally roll carriage return mechanism effective, and means on the tally-roll carriage for rendering said return mechanism inefi'ective.
8. The combination of a yielding vibratable frame constituting a carriage for supporting paper, ,means for vibrating said frame, an escapement rack carried by said frame, and a carriage return gear for meshing with said rack in its normal or retracted position. v 9. The combination of a yielding vibratable frame constituting a carriage for supporting paper, means for vibrating said frame, an escapement rack carried by said frame and movable therewith, a carriage return gear designed to engage said rack when said carriage frame is in its normal or retracted position, and means operable in any lateral position of the carriage for actuating said return gear whereby the carriage is restored to its starting position.
10. The combination of a vibratable tallyroll carriage and means for positioning the same laterally in one direction, a returning mechanism for moving said carriage in an opposite direction, another paper carriage having an arched bar, adjustable blocks mounted on said bar, and means whereby said carriage returning mechanism for the tally-roll carriage is rendered operative as said adjustable blocks pass a predetermined point.
