Description
O. H. MELLUM. COMBINATION PLIERS AND WRENCH. APPLICATION HLED JUNE 21. 1918.
lgwiasu Patented Feb. 18, 1919 ATTORNEY I OLE H. MELLUM, OF UNION, NORTH DAKOTA.
COMBINATION PLIERS AND WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
Application filed June 21 1918. Serial No. 241,244.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE H. MELLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union, in the county of Cavalier and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new production of a combination plier and wrench wherein one jaw cooperates with the remalnmg jaw when the device is operated either as a wrench or. plier.
Another object of this invention is the.
production of a combination plier and wrench, wherein a rimary jaw cooperates with the secondary aw for the purposes of a wrench, while a plier jaw is pivoted upon the body of the secondary jaw and engages the primary jaw for the purposes of a pair of 'liers.
roadly stated, this invention consists of a primary jaw and a secondary jaw having enlarged bodies pivotally connected to ether, handle portions extending from said bodies, said primary jaw having teeth upon the outer edge thereof, a plier jaw having a body portion pivotally mounted upon the body portion of the secondary jaw, said plier jaw having teeth thereon engaging the teeth of the primary jaw thus permitting the device to be used either as a pair of pllers or as a wrench.
.One practical form of construction and assembly of the resent invention will be hereinafter descri ed and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combination plier and wrench.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the combination plier and wrench showing the wrench jaws separated and in condition to receive a nut therebetween.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention about to be described, it will be seen that the wrench portion of the tool comprises a primary jaw 5 and the auxiliary jaw 6. The primary jaw'5 has a thickened body extending therefrom, while the auxiliary jaw 6 has a thickened body 8- extending therefrom. The bodies 7 and 8 bear upon each other and as they are comparatively broad will reduce friction and they are further pivotally connected together by the bolt 9 extending therethrough which carries the nut 10, as shown in Fig. 3. The handles .11 and 12 extend from the bodies 7 and 8 for a considerable distance and thus it will be seen that eflicient operating means are provided for moving the jaws away from each other or toward each other as occasion may require. As shown in Fig. 1, the jaws are in a closed condition, although itis obvious that in use, the jaws are adapted to be swung apart, as shown in Fi 4 for permitting a nut to be received there etween and the length of the handles 11 and .12increases the fulcrum action for firmly binding the jaws upon the nut.
The body portions 7 and 8 are provided with notches 13, formed adjacent the jaws 5 and 6 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4 these notches being adapted to be moved into registry, as shown in Fig. 4 by the moving apart of the handles 11 and 12, thus permitting a strand of wire to be inserted in the notches. The handles may then be swung together as shown in Fig. 1, thus moving the notches out of registry and severing the wire strand extending therethrough, whereby these notches will perform the function of a wire cutter. The plier jaw 14 has a body 15 bearing upon the handle 12 of the auxiliaryv jaw and it will be noted, by referring to Fig. 2 that a bolt 16' passes through the body portion 15 of the plier jaw and the handle portion of the auxiliary jaw of the'secondary jaw 6, thus pivotally mounting the lier jaw upon the handle of the secondary jaw. The handle 16 of the plier jaw extends beyond the body 15 thereof and contiguous to the handle 12 of the seconda jaw 6. The plier jaw 14 is provided with teeth 17 upon its inner edge, which engage the teeth 18 formed on the rear edge of the primary jaw 5, as shown in Fig. 1. It is therefore obvious that the handle 15 may be urged toward the handle 11, thus bringing the teeth 17 into a binding engagement with the teeth 18, whereby an article may be gripped between the plier jaw and the primary jaw, thus allowing the device to perform the functions of aplier. A hook 19 extends from the rear edge of the plier jaw 14 and extends contiguous to the rear edge of the body 15, whereby the hook 19 may be used for any hooking purposes desired.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and efficient combination wrench and plier has been'produced, wherein the bodies of the primary jaw and the plier jaw are pivotally mounted upon the body of the handle of the secondary jaw. Accordingly, when the handle of the secondary jaw is urged toward the handle of the primary jaw, the jaws will be-swung together for gripping anut and for actuating the wire cutter although when the handle of the secondary jaw is urged toward the handie 16 of the plier jaw, it will be seen that the body of the secondary jaw will move the primary jaw to cause the teeth thereof to engage the teeth of the plier jaw for allowing the device to be used as a air of pliers.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form. of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may naeaese prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a tool of the class described, the combination of a primary jawand an auxiliary jaw having bodies extending therefrom, handles extending from said bodies, a 'plier jaw having a body extending therefrom and terminating in a handle, the body of said 'primary jaw being ivotally mounted upon the body of said auxiliary jaw, the body of saidplier jaw being pivotally mounted upon the handle of the auxiliary jaw, said first mentioned handles being adapted to be moved toward each other to force said primary and auxiliary jaws toward each other, the handle of said auxiliary jaw being adapted to be urged toward the handle of the plier jaw, whereby the body of the plier jaw will move the body of the rimary jaw doward the auxiliary jaw, us causing the mdy of the primary jaw to engage with the auxiliary jaw. In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
