EDWARD MCGOVNEY, 0F MOKENA, ILLINOIS.
LOCKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
Application filed July 23, 1917. Serial No. 182,217.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MoGovNnY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Mokena, in the county of WVill and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in looking devices for automobiles and more particularly to a device for locking the control levers in inoperative position. A further object is to provide a device of this type that is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and etficient in operation. WVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of my locking device illustrating its application and it is taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1 on line 2-2 of that figure.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view, on a small scale, of the device, illustrating its application to the control levers of the machine.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout.
The reference numeral 1 denotes the floor of an automobile provided with the usual lever slots 2 through which the levers 3 eX- tend. My locking device comprises a pair of plates 4, 5 each of which is formed with spaced lateral angular feet 6 formed along one lateral plate edge, the legs of each plate being separated by a deep notch 7 formed in each plate. Each plate is formed also along its relatively adjacent edge with a notch 8, said notches, when the plates are secured together being disposed in alinement with each other. The plate 4 is formed with a protruding tongue 9 in which I form a slot 10 adapted to receive the upstanding apertured ear 11 that is carried by the plate 5, said ear extending through a slot in said plate 5 and being secured to the underside thereof by the rivets 12. A lock 13 is adapted to be secured to the said car 11 to secure said plates together.
To apply the locking device to the levers 3 the feet 6 upon the relatively remote sides of the plates are inserted in the outer slots 2 beneath the floor 1 so that the notches 7, S encompass the levers 3. The plates are then locked together thus locking the levers sta tionary and in off position so that it is impossible to start the machine. By removing the lock 13 and removing the plates a, 5 the levers may be moved to start and control the machine.
What is claimed is 1. In a locking device, a pair of overlapping plates provided with spaced feet along their relatively remote lateral edges, said plates being formed along said lateral edges with oppositely disposed notches and along their overlapped edges with alining notches, an apertured tongue carried by one plate and overlapping the other plate, an apertured ear carried by the other plate for insertion in said apertured tongue, and means for locking said tongue and ear together.
2. In a locking device, a pair of overlapping plates provided with space-d feet along their relatively remote lateral edges, said plates being formed along said edges with oppositely disposed deep notches and along their overlapped edges with relatively shallow alining notches, said shallow alining notches being offset with relation to said deep notches, an apertured tongue carried by one plate and disposed upon the second plate, an apertured ear carried by the second plate and projected upwardly through the apertured portion of the said tongue, and means for locking said tongue and ear together.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affiXed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD MOGOVNEY.
